After hanging up the phone, Sun Desheng smiled faintly at Shen La.
“La Zi, you heard that, right? While both Director Yang and I are away, they’ve parachuted in a new bureau chief from above. He’ll officially take over tomorrow. I’m telling you, Director Yang is already anxious. He knows better than anyone—no matter who it is, except for me, no one can actually hold the Special Investigation Bureau together…”
Shen La remained silent for a moment before speaking.
“Desheng, don’t be careless. The higher-ups know what the Bureau does. They wouldn’t just send in someone clueless. Did Director Yang say where this new bureau chief was transferred from?”
“They did,” Sun Desheng said. “Some department director from the ministry. He’s held leadership roles in several places before and handled cases like ours.”
As he spoke, Sun Desheng instinctively reached for a cigarette—but then remembered he had given the whole pack to Kong Dalong. He chuckled and asked Shen La for one, lit it, and continued.
“I’ve heard of this guy before. Remember the Chiwishan village gu poisoning case four years ago? And when I was in the U.S., the blood corpse case unearthed in Heshan Sixteen Li Fort? He led the teams that handled both.”
Hearing this, Shen La immediately remembered.
“Right—Ren Rong. He used to be the director of the Major Case Coordination Office. Those two cases were already about to reach our Bureau, but he intercepted them himself. At the time, even the big shots were waiting to see him fail, but he actually solved them… Desheng, something’s off. Looking back now, it feels like they were grooming him to replace you.”
“Only now you realize that?” Sun Desheng laughed.
But then he shrugged.
“Anyway, it doesn’t matter who it is. I already resigned yesterday. I’m just waiting for formal procedures. Whatever happens to the Bureau from now on has nothing to do with me.”
He waved his hand.
“Let’s go check on our brother. That kid is a treasure now—can’t let anyone set their sights on him.”
Although Shen La felt uneasy about the situation, he said nothing more. After notifying the Second Division to clean up the scene, he left the building with Sun Desheng.
By then, the seven or eight captured men had already been escorted back to the Bureau by Xiao Yifeng’s people.
The Yang brothers were guarding Che Qianzi in a business vehicle at the entrance. Seeing them come out, they quickly opened the door.
After getting in, Sun Desheng smiled at Che Qianzi.
“Brother, did you see anyone come out of the office building just now?”
“Only you two,” Che Qianzi replied. “We waited a long time. Didn’t see anyone else. Fatty, what happened earlier? Why were they coming for me? I almost met King Yama without even reacting.”
“They weren’t really after you,” Sun Desheng said casually. “They just used you as a shield so we couldn’t act.”
He took a bottle of water from the car, drank a sip, and continued.
“It’s related to the Tianjin case. Once Old Xiao finishes interrogating them, everything will be clear.”
Then he added, “Drive. Take us to the Bureau. I still have some personal belongings there. The Bureau’s about to change—I may have resigned, but I’m taking my things with me.”
After that, he repeated Yang Shujie’s phone call contents, all the while watching the Yang brothers closely.
“Gentlemen, I’m officially leaving the Bureau. We probably won’t see each other as often anymore. Maybe the new chief will change the rules I set—like allowing side jobs.”
Yang Xiao replied on behalf of both of them.
“Desheng, you don’t need to test us. We joined the Bureau because of you. We won’t forget that.”
He paused.
“But we rely on Director Wu. As long as he doesn’t say anything, we can’t just leave on our own. Still—no matter whether we’re in the Bureau or not, if you call us and the price is right, we’ll come help.”
Sun Desheng had expected them to follow him out of loyalty, but Yang Xiao remained unmoved. He laughed awkwardly and changed the subject.
After some time, they returned to the Bureau around one in the morning.
After getting out of the car, they entered the building. Hearing that Xiao Yifeng was interrogating the prisoners, they headed straight for the second basement level.
Sun Desheng originally had some valuables stored there when the Bureau was reactivated. He had intended it to be temporary—but seven or eight years had passed.
Worried that the new bureau chief arriving tomorrow would question them, he decided to retrieve everything in advance.
However, when they reached the second basement via elevator, two unfamiliar guards stopped them.
“This area is sealed off by Director Ren. No one is allowed in until it’s unsealed.”
Sun Desheng froze. He hadn’t expected that the new bureau chief—arriving only tomorrow—had already sealed his personal storage a day early.
Before he could speak, Che Qianzi, already frustrated, pushed forward and shoved the two men aside.
“Tell your Director Ren that Sun Desheng is here to unseal what he sealed. Go back where you came from—no need to guard here anymore. What? You want to fight?”
The two men were Ren Rong’s trusted subordinates. Being shoved like that made them angry, and they immediately started shoving back.
Che Qianzi had never suffered such treatment before. All the frustration he had been holding from earlier exploded. He was about to use his finishing move—aiming a kick straight at the groin—when Sun Desheng stopped him.
“Brother… give me face. I’ll handle this. It’s just some worthless junk anyway. We don’t need it anymore.”
He turned to the guards.
“Let me ask—besides here, what else has Director Ren sealed?”
One guard replied reluctantly.
“Since you’re from the Bureau, I’ll tell you. Besides this place, he also sealed the former director’s office, the cafeteria, the finance room, and the Fifth Office equipment room. Tomorrow morning after taking office, he’ll audit all six departments.”
Sun Desheng smiled.
“So he really is coming for me.”
He turned around.
“Forget it. We’re not leaving. It’ll be dawn soon anyway. Go upstairs and rest. Tomorrow we’ll attend Director Ren’s inauguration ceremony.”
Shen La suggested, “Desheng, you should come to my place instead…”
“No need,” Sun Desheng said. “Who knows if Xiao Zhao is at your place? We’d be disturbing you two.”
He grinned.
“My office is sealed, but Director Yang’s office isn’t. Let’s go there and rest. And tomorrow… let me properly meet this newly parachuted bureau chief.”
