Just after the new bureau chief had been introduced, the investigators of the Special Investigation Bureau were still recovering from shock when Sun Desheng arrived—with Che Qianzi, who looked like a mad dog.
Almost everyone turned their gaze toward the doorway. People like Xiong Wanyi, who loved excitement, were already thinking about where to stand later if a fight broke out so they could get the best view.
Seeing Sun Desheng appear, Yang Shujie finally breathed a sigh of relief. Ignoring the senior officials from the ministry behind him, he smiled and said:
“You’re not too late, Desheng, you’re back just—”
“Of course I had to come back and handle my resignation,” Sun Desheng interrupted with a grin.
He bared his teeth in a smile toward the senior officials on the stage.
“I just took a walk around the Bureau. Not a single person there. Could someone help me out? Issue me a resignation certificate? I need to transfer my affiliation quickly.”
Then he turned to the crowd of investigators below.
“Everyone’s here? Perfect. My ‘Lingyun Temple Film & Culture Company’ is about to launch. End of the year we’re planning a Hollywood-level blockbuster. Temporary title: My Days at the Special Investigation Bureau. We’re still working on the script. When filming starts, you all must come support us.”
Seeing how carefree he was, as if the new bureau chief meant nothing, the crowd began to laugh and tease him.
Xiong Wanyi shouted, “Desheng! That sounds like a blockbuster already! Any spoilers? Which big stars are you hiring? Are you playing yourself? Who’s playing your girl Shao Yiyi? It’s gotta be Angelina the ‘big baby,’ right?”
Sun Desheng laughed loudly.
“Of course it’s a blockbuster. I’ve got the Er-Ma investment group backing it. First installment: 1.5 billion USD. If there’s a sequel, we’ll talk about the ‘post-Bureau chronicles’ later.”
“As for the heroine… the ‘big baby’ is fine, but her temperament doesn’t quite match Yiyi. I’m thinking international casting—what about Anne Hathaway? She’s good, and most importantly—she’s white.”
The entire room burst into laughter.
The ministry officials on stage, however, looked increasingly unhappy.
At that moment, the middle-aged man pushing Yang Shujie’s wheelchair stepped forward. Smiling, he said:
“Director Sun, hello. I’m Ren Rong, temporarily assigned by the ministry to take over the Special Investigation Bureau. We met face-to-face at the previous ministry meeting.”
He extended his hand.
Sun Desheng shook it casually, still smiling.
“Ah, Director Ren. I remember you. You’re the one who used to work in the anti-porn division, right? Went undercover as a customer once, got caught on camera by a hostess, and was dragged to the police station as a pervert…”
Ren Rong didn’t show any anger. He simply smiled.
“You’re mistaken. That was Director Ren Heshan. We just share the same surname.”
He continued calmly, “There will be new announcements regarding your assignment later. Please take a seat on the podium—I’ve reserved a spot for you next to Minister An.”
His composure easily dissolved the awkwardness.
Just as Sun Desheng was about to respond, suddenly all the investigators’ phones began ringing one after another.
Seeing this, Ren Rong frowned.
“During meetings, phones must be silent or turned off. Anyone who didn’t mute their phone will face disciplinary—”
Before he could finish, several bureau directors suddenly stood up.
They ignored him completely.
Leading them, Hao Wenming said urgently:
“Desheng, warning signal received! Sixty-plus registered individuals from the Bureau—Li Hu and Hao Zaixian in Anhui, An Xiaobian in Jiangxi, Zhang San Mazi, and others—have all appeared in Beijing. They were all banned from entering within 100 kilometers of the capital. This is serious—something big is happening!”
Ren Rong froze.
Trying to assert authority in front of the ministry officials, he quickly said:
“Then block them at airports, railways, and highways! Contain them first!”
At that moment, Yang Shujie rolled his wheelchair behind him and coughed lightly.
“Director Ren, those people are all practitioners with special abilities. Since they haven’t committed crimes, we can’t detain them through normal law enforcement. Back then, Director Sun personally negotiated with them, offering conditions to keep them out of Beijing. There was an agreement—if they enter Beijing again, it is treated as intent to commit crimes. We have authority to detain them immediately.”
“Then arrest them!” Ren Rong waved his hand impatiently.
“All investigators, obey orders! Assemble at the entrance in ten minutes! Teams of three—pursue and track those targets!”
No one moved.
Every investigator looked toward Sun Desheng.
Even the ministry officials on stage could clearly see it now:
Ren Rong simply could not integrate into the Special Investigation Bureau—he was completely unnecessary here.
“This has nothing to do with me,” Sun Desheng said with a smile, pointing at Ren Rong.
“Didn’t I already say? I quit two days ago. Listen to your new bureau chief.”
He turned casually.
“By the way, Director Ren, when you have time, write me a resignation certificate. My company is waiting to open.”
Hao Wenming walked over.
“Desheng, what time is it and you’re still joking? These people have a history—they just haven’t been caught yet. One or two we can handle, but sixty or seventy at once? This is clearly targeted. Since the Bureau’s second reconstruction, we’ve never faced something this serious. And you’re just walking away?”
“Hao Head,” Sun Desheng sighed. “Back then I was alone, so if something happened, it didn’t matter. But now I have Yiyi and Xiao Wu. We agreed on this. She’s been worried every day…”
Then he continued calmly:
“And besides, the ministry already sent an expert, didn’t they? Director Ren is very capable. He’s solved several cases that originally belonged to us. He’s much better than me.”
He cleared his throat.
“Anyway, I won’t be joining this operation. You all handle your own tasks. I’ll come back later to finish my resignation.”
Seeing that Sun Desheng had no intention of competing for authority, Ren Rong quietly relaxed.
He immediately turned back to the room.
“I understand everyone’s concerns, but this is not the time for debate. The situation is urgent. Department heads, assign personnel. Has Director Wu of Division Six arrived?”
Yang Shujie replied:
“Director Wu doesn’t sit in daily operations. Division Six isn’t part of the regular investigator sequence—it’s more of a consultant role. Tu An is handling other matters. Yang Jun and Yang Xiao are on leave. And Shen La…”
He paused.
“Shen La… where is Shen La?”
At that moment, Director Hao Zhengyi raised his hand.
“Shen La’s girlfriend had a family emergency. He went to check on it. I’ll inform him and have him return as soon as possible.”
