Gu Yihan dashed quickly from the military dependents’ compound toward the military hospital.
“Sister-in-law, get on the bike!” Xiao Wu called out, riding up beside her on his women’s bicycle.
Gu Yihan hurriedly climbed on, only then realizing she was still carrying the basket on her back.
As Xiao Wu pedaled, he glanced back at Gu Yihan and said, “Sister-in-law, you’re in such a hurry, you even forgot the bike at home.”
Gu Yihan, her mind preoccupied with worry over Lu Huailin, only replied perfunctorily, “Mm.”
Xiao Wu knew she must be extremely anxious about Colonel Lu, so he didn’t say anything else and focused on riding the bike.
At the entrance of the military compound, Li Commissioner’s wife, Sister Li, and her younger sister Li Xia, along with Gu Yihan’s neighbor Lan Cao, were chatting under a large tree.
Sister Li looked up and saw Xiao Wu riding the bicycle with Gu Yihan on the back.
She quickly nudged Lan Cao with her arm and pointed toward Gu Yihan, mouthing, “Isn’t that your neighbor?”
Lan Cao looked up, only catching a glimpse of the basket behind the rider. She couldn’t tell if it was Gu Yihan, and didn’t think much of it. “Probably going up the mountain,” she replied perfunctorily.
Right now, her biggest worry was how she could get pregnant—why could everyone else have children, but she couldn’t even conceive?
Seeing Lan Cao brush her off, Sister Li couldn’t help but mutter, “That girl is corrupting the whole atmosphere of our compound.”
“Look at our compound—several military wives have even bought women’s bicycles…”
“Sister, haven’t you forgotten what my brother told you?” Li Xia suddenly interrupted.
“I…” Sister Li fell silent. She had been scolded by Commissioner Li and warned that if she couldn’t control her tongue, she would be sent back to her hometown.
Meanwhile, at the military hospital, Gu Yihan didn’t wait for Xiao Wu to park the bike. She jumped off, unloaded the basket, set it on the bike, and dashed straight toward the hospital.
Seeing her, Shen Yujie quickly called out, “Sister-in-law!”
Hearing his voice, Gu Yihan hurried over. Grabbing his arm, she anxiously asked, “Which operating room is Lu Huailin in?”
Shen Yujie patiently explained, “Sister-in-law, don’t worry. I’ll take you to the entrance of the operating room and wait there.”
He led her through the hospital lobby, out a side door to another building, and up the stairs to the second floor.
As they walked, Shen Yujie tried to reassure her: “Sister-in-law, don’t worry. The surgery is being done by Dr. Wei—he’s the best surgeon in the military hospital. Lu Huailin will be fine.”
But how could Gu Yihan possibly calm down? She wouldn’t be at ease until she saw Lu Huailin herself.
They walked to the end of the hallway on the second floor, stopping at the entrance of the operating room, where two soldiers stood guard.
One was a middle-aged man with a stern expression, radiating an aura of authority that made him intimidating.
The other looked about twenty-five, probably around Xiao Wu’s age.
Gu Yihan didn’t recognize either of them. When she first came to the compound, she went straight to work at the textile factory. Shortly after, Lu Huailin left on a mission, and she hadn’t had the chance to meet them.
Everyone waited quietly outside the operating room. Inside her heart, Gu Yihan whispered, “System, can you see what’s happening in there?”
The hamster in her spatial system stretched its psychic energy to cover the entire operating room and scanned Lu Huailin’s meridians.
Having checked, it replied perfunctorily, “I can see it. Don’t worry, he won’t die.”
“What do you mean he won’t die? Can you even talk properly?” Gu Yihan snapped, irritated by the system’s casual tone.
The little hamster felt wronged. He wasn’t going to die, so what else did she want it to say?
“You used my energy, you stole my space, and now you’re giving me half-hearted answers,” Gu Yihan said, realizing she was taking out her frustration on it.
The hamster retorted, clearly annoyed, “Why should I care if Lu Huailin lives or dies? That’s his own fault for not training properly.”
Gu Yihan found the system’s tone increasingly off-putting. Once Lu Huailin was stable, she decided she needed to check the space herself.
Shen Yujie noticed her standing dazed by the wall and said, “Sister-in-law, sit down and rest for a bit. The surgery will take over two hours.”
Hearing that, Gu Yihan’s heart tightened with worry. “Dr. Shen, do you know where Lu Huailin was injured?”
Shen Yujie saw the hopeful look in her eyes and opened his mouth, but said nothing.
Lu Huailin’s injuries were indeed serious. He had been hurt during a mission, and the local hospital wouldn’t dare operate. He was urgently transferred to their military hospital, and only Dr. Wei had enough skill to perform the surgery successfully.
Seeing Shen Yujie remain silent, Gu Yihan’s eyes gradually darkened—this meant Lu Huailin’s condition was very serious.
“Don’t worry. Your man will be fine.”
“At worst, I’ll give him some good supplements to help him recover,” the little hamster boasted in the space.
Still, Gu Yihan wouldn’t relax until she saw him, so she didn’t respond to the system.
“Hmph, I really didn’t expect humans on this planet to be so fragile. The warriors on Kepler are hundreds of times stronger than your planet’s fighters,” the system complained.
Gu Yihan was about to retort when Xiao Wu’s voice interrupted her.
“Sister-in-law!” Xiao Wu hurried over.
He was about to ask Shen Yujie about the commander’s condition when he noticed Commander Zhang standing at the operating room entrance.
Xiao Wu immediately saluted and loudly greeted, “Commander Zhang!”
Commander Zhang, the middle-aged man, and the young soldier next to him returned the salute.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Commander Zhang approached Gu Yihan. He tried to soften his expression but couldn’t quite manage it. He forced a small smile and said, “Comrade Gu, I’ve heard Lu Huailin speak of you. He’s an outstanding soldier. He will get through this. We must believe in him.”
Tears filled Gu Yihan’s eyes instantly, streaming down her cheeks.
Choking back sobs, she said, “Thank you, Commander Zhang. Lu Huailin will be fine.”
Seeing her cry, Commander Zhang said nothing, standing silently, eyes fixed on the operating room.
Time passed slowly. The operating room door finally opened, revealing a man in his fifties wearing a white coat and a mask, his eyes slightly red.
Seeing his teacher, Dr. Wei, Shen Yujie anxiously asked, “Teacher!”
Dr. Wei glanced at Shen Yujie, then directly at Commander Zhang, and said, “The patient’s condition was very dangerous this time. The bullet was very close to the heart. The surgery was successful. With proper observation and recovery, it won’t affect future training.”
Commander Zhang nodded. “Thank you, Dr. Wei.”
Gu Yihan immediately asked, “Dr. Wei, are there any dietary restrictions we should follow?”
Dr. Wei glanced at Shen Yujie and said to Gu Yihan and the others, “Regarding diet, Dr. Shen will explain to you.”
With that, Dr. Wei left.
