Kun City Railway Station

Lu Huailin carefully guided Gu Yihan through the crowd toward the train exit, finally pushing past the throngs of people and safely getting off the train.

After stepping down, Gu Yihan took a deep breath of fresh air. Trains in this era allowed live chickens and ducks onboard, and in the confined space, the smell wasn’t particularly pleasant.

Lu Huailin held Gu Yihan’s hand while carrying his luggage in the other hand. “I’ll take you out of the station first, then go get Maomao.”

Gu Yihan knew that Maomao had been arranged by Lu Huailin to be kept in a cargo carriage, so it was fine to pick it up a little later.

Once outside the station, Lu Huailin immediately spotted Xiao Wu waiting at the exit.

Xiao Wu had arrived a bit early and, seeing Lu Huailin carefully escorting a beautiful lady, immediately waved his arms and shouted, “Commander! Sister-in-law!”

Hearing Xiao Wu’s call, Lu Huailin walked straight to the military jeep.

He opened the door and turned to Gu Yihan gently. “Wife, you get in and rest for a bit. I’ll go fetch Maomao.”

“Wait a moment,” Gu Yihan called out, stopping him from turning.

She pulled a leash from her bag and handed it to Lu Huailin. “The station is too crowded. Tie Maomao up—I’m worried it’ll wander off.”

Lu Huailin nodded, took the leash, and handed his luggage to Xiao Wu before striding toward the station.

Xiao Wu silently watched the commander walk away, then opened the driver’s door and placed the small amount of luggage on the passenger seat.

After a moment, “Woof, woof!”

Hearing Maomao’s bark, Gu Yihan quickly opened the door and let it jump into the car. She patted its neck and laughed, “You smell awful.”

Xiao Wu’s eyes lit up. “Sister-in-law, this dog of yours is so well raised! Can I keep it with me from now on?”

Gu Yihan smiled at him. “That depends on Maomao’s own choice.”

Lu Huailin opened the passenger-side door, took the luggage in hand, and looked at Xiao Wu. “Later. For now, let’s head to the housing compound.”

In a good mood, Lu Huailin turned to Gu Yihan and said, “Wife, you know Xiao Wu. He’s my orderly. If anything comes up while I’m on a mission, you can go straight to him.”

Seeing the commander so warm, Xiao Wu whispered, “Commander, everyone in the housing compound is already talking about sister-in-law.”

Lu Huailin’s smile faded. He glanced at Xiao Wu. “Talking about what?”

Xiao Wu shivered and hurriedly replied, “Just a bunch of illiterate old women gossiping. I didn’t pay attention. Sister-in-law’s aura… she’s one in a million. Commander, your taste is impeccable; otherwise, she wouldn’t be worthy of you.”

Curious, he added, “Sister-in-law, how did you and the commander meet?”

Gu Yihan looked puzzled. “Comrade Wu, you don’t recognize me?”

Xiao Wu froze. Could it be that she liked him? He shook his head frantically. “Sister-in-law, don’t joke with me. I really don’t know you.”

Gu Yihan: “…”

Lu Huailin shot Xiao Wu a cold glance. “Focus and drive properly.”

Xiao Wu, startled by Gu Yihan’s words, kept thinking, When did sister-in-law ever meet me? Foolishly blaming his own vanity for thinking so.

When they reached the military gate, Xiao Wu stopped the car. The sentries asked a few routine questions and let them through.

The military wives were curious about Commander Lu’s wife. Could she be even more beautiful than Qi Yanran, the star of the Art Troupe?

Everyone knew Qi Yanran liked Commander Lu. If she learned he got married after performing, there would be an uproar.

The jeep entered the housing compound and stopped at a small courtyard gate.

Lu Huailin got out, opened the door, and held Gu Yihan’s hand as they entered the yard.

He introduced, “This courtyard has three rooms and a living room. It’s not small. I’ll ask the logistics department for some cement to make a small path so it’s easier to walk when it rains.”

After getting out, Maomao followed Gu Yihan around the yard, clearly overjoyed after being cooped up all day.

Gu Yihan walked around the courtyard and said to Lu Huailin, “We can plant some vegetables in the front yard. Can you set up a chicken coop by the gate?”

Lu Huailin readily agreed. “Sure, that’s easy.”

Seeing the two of them chatting endlessly, Xiao Wu interrupted, “Commander, the things you sent have been put inside the house.”

Lu Huailin said to Gu Yihan, “I’ll go in first to check. Once I finish, you can enter so the dust doesn’t mess up your hair.”

Xiao Wu rolled his eyes at Commander Lu.

He turned to Gu Yihan. “Sister-in-law, a few brothers cleaned the house yesterday, and some simple furniture has been moved in.”

Just then, Lu Huailin came out of the house, and Mrs. Chen appeared holding some vegetables. “Commander Lu, did you move in today?”

Lu Huailin walked over and introduced, “Wife, this is Mrs. Chen. She bought the clothes you wore in the hospital back then.”

Mrs. Chen didn’t need an introduction. She warmly handed the vegetables to Gu Yihan. “It’s your first day here. I figured you wouldn’t have time to buy groceries. These are from my yard—don’t mind them.”

Gu Yihan accepted the vegetables. “Perfect, we have something for dinner tonight. Thank you, Mrs. Chen.”

After a brief chat, Mrs. Chen said, “The kids will be home soon. I should go back to cook.”

Gu Yihan handed the vegetables to Lu Huailin and accompanied Mrs. Chen to the gate.

Lu Huailin glared at Xiao Wu for his lack of sense. “You should go back too.”

Xiao Wu saluted immediately. “Understood, Commander,” and left through the gate.

Gu Yihan laughed at Xiao Wu’s antics. “He’s quite funny.”

Lu Huailin led Gu Yihan into the house. “Come inside. Let’s see if there’s anything else we need to add.”

Following him into the living room, Gu Yihan went straight to the bedroom. She saw the mailed packages on the bed and a wardrobe.

Soon, Lu Huailin came in carrying a stool, hugged Gu Yihan, and said, “Xiao Wu has already cleaned the furniture, bed, and wardrobe.”

Then he guided her to sit on the stool. “You rest for a bit while I set up the bed.”

He unpacked the packages, putting clothes not needed for now into the wardrobe, laid out the bedding, and stored extra sheets and blankets.

Watching Lu Huailin bustling about, Gu Yihan felt warm inside. Although she had never been in a romantic relationship, she knew marriage wasn’t just about one person’s efforts.
