Mechanical Factory
Gu Yihan hadn’t even reached the office when she heard Tang Jiaojiao crying down the hallway. Pushing the door open, she saw her eyes red and swollen from crying.
Gu Yihan walked straight to her desk and sat down, then quietly asked Sister Li, “Is this because someone she likes got married?”
Sister Li stifled a laugh. She didn’t comment—she couldn’t blame Gu Yihan for overthinking. Tang Jiaojiao had only ever cried in the office over her feelings for Liu Yang.
Tang Jiaojiao had been pampered since childhood, and love was the one area where she wasn’t smooth sailing.
“Hic… sniff… my childhood best friend actually spoke ill of me behind my back!” Tang Jiaojiao sobbed.
Gu Yihan: “…”
Alright, maybe she was being narrow-minded. Still, was this really worth Tang Jiaojiao crying like this?
Gu Yihan busied herself with her own tasks. She wasn’t sure how long Lu Huailin would take to finish his side of things, but a day’s work needed to be done on schedule.
After Gu Yihan entered, Tang Jiaojiao didn’t ask her anything. That stubborn little girl’s temperament was acting up again.
With a voice full of grievance, she whimpered, “Xiao Han, what should I do if someone talks behind my back?”
Gu Yihan frowned and looked at Tang Jiaojiao. “You’re asking me?”
Tang Jiaojiao’s gaze was as clear as an innocent child’s. “Yes. We’re about the same age, and I just want to know how to deal with them.”
Gu Yihan couldn’t help but smile at her words. “As for your situation, I don’t know. But if someone talks about me behind my back, I pretend not to know.”
“Why? Aren’t you upset?” Tang Jiaojiao asked, puzzled.
Seeing everyone in the office looking at her, Gu Yihan smiled: “Those who are lucky are hated by thousands; those who aren’t lucky hate thousands.”
Tang Jiaojiao was shocked. “There’s such a saying?”
Gu Yihan continued working on her tasks. “Who doesn’t talk about others behind their backs? As long as they don’t say it to your face, why worry? Those who are worse than you envy you. If you know their temper, just keep your distance.”
Tang Jiaojiao sniffled and said, “Then I cried for nothing… my eyes are all swollen. Sniff… I feel so hurt. I was really nice to her.”
Sister Li couldn’t hold back anymore and burst out laughing.
“Haha… Tang Jiaojiao, you’re just too idle. Once you get married, even your best friends will slowly drift apart,” Sister Li said, holding her stomach with laughter.
Sister Zhang nodded silently, clearly agreeing with Sister Li.
Liu Yang, being a man, truly couldn’t understand how women could be so easily upset.
For the next few days, Gu Yihan went to work during the day and, after work, went home to sort out the household. Anything that needed to be sent away was mailed; anything that couldn’t be mailed was stored in her space.
She couldn’t bear to kill the few old hens at home—they laid eggs constantly—so she put them into space when she left.
Standing in the yard, Gu Yihan looked at the house she’d lived in for years. She wasn’t ready to part with it, but it was close to Kun City anyway.
The next morning
Before leaving, Gu Yihan looked at Maomao: “Maomao, stay home and watch the house today. Don’t go to the factory.”
Maomao was unhappy, turned his back, stopped wagging his tail, and drooped it.
Gu Yihan stroked his head. “There’s bedding, food, and all the things we’ve added over the years. You have to watch over them, or someone might steal them.”
Watching Maomao slowly walk to his bed and lie down, Gu Yihan sighed. She didn’t know when Lu Huailin would arrive, so she had to be prepared.
Without Maomao accompanying her, the walk to the factory seemed unusually long.
“Xiao Gu, working hard?” Ma Chao from HR caught up to her.
Gu Yihan turned slightly and said, “Good morning, Xiao Ma, working hard!”
Ma Chao linked his arm with hers. “Xiao Gu, I have a cousin who works as a technician in our factory, he—”
Gu Yihan quickly interrupted, laughing: “Xiao Ma, I’m married.”
“Married? How come I didn’t hear about this?” Ma Chao was surprised.
Gu Yihan took the opportunity to pull her arm free and said, “My husband is in the military.”
After hearing that, Ma Chao didn’t mention his cousin again. The two walked on in silence and soon arrived at the office building.
As soon as Gu Yihan went upstairs, she saw Secretary Su smiling at her from a distance.
Secretary Su, with a professional smile, said, “Comrade Gu, Director Luo wants to see you.”
Gu Yihan followed Secretary Su straight to Director Luo’s office.
Director Luo appraised her from head to toe. Gu Yihan walked up to his desk with a smile: “Director Luo, did you need me?”
Director Luo nodded, pulled a paper from the left drawer, and handed it to her: “This is the Kun City Textile Factory job application form.”
Gu Yihan took it with both hands, glanced at the time, and realized she was still on time.
Director Luo laughed heartily at her. “I didn’t expect Lu Huailin to get his marriage certificate so quickly. Being a soldier’s wife isn’t easy—you need to be prepared.”
He added, “As long as Uncle Luo is still at the Mechanical Factory, you can come back anytime. Work well at the Textile Factory, and don’t embarrass our Mechanical Factory.”
Gu Yihan politely replied: “Thank you, Uncle Luo.”
Back in the office, Gu Yihan began packing her things into her bag.
“Sister Zhang, I heard HR say that tomorrow two accountants will be transferred from the county factory. Why is there an extra person?” Sister Li asked, puzzled.
“I don’t know,” Sister Zhang replied, worried. She didn’t want an unknown person pressing down on her.
Gu Yihan looked at everyone and said: “I won’t come tomorrow.”
Tang Jiaojiao exclaimed in surprise: “Not coming?”
Everyone in the office stared at Gu Yihan, waiting for her to continue.
She raised her eyebrows and smiled: “I’m married and need to follow my husband to the military post.”
Tang Jiaojiao immediately got up, ran to Gu Yihan, and hugged her: “Following your husband? That’s quite something!”
“I want to marry a soldier too, but my mom disagrees. She says I won’t be able to handle being a soldier’s wife,” Tang Jiaojiao lamented.
Sister Li laughed at this, remembering that Tang Jiaojiao had liked Liu Yang last time, and now she wanted to marry a soldier.
Liu Yang: “…”
Gu Yihan took out some White Rabbit candies she had prepared in advance and handed a few pieces to each person: “For good luck.”
After work, Gu Yihan left quickly, worried about Maomao.
As she entered Willow Alley, she saw Lu Huailin standing at the gate, smiling at her.
Gu Yihan hurried over. “Why are you back?”
Lu Huailin’s eyes were fixed on her. “You go yourself. I don’t trust leaving you alone.”
For the next two days, Lu Huailin helped Gu Yihan pack up everything that needed to be mailed and sent it to Kun City.
