Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin stepped out of the state-run restaurant. Since it was summer, it was still fairly bright outside; the sky hadn’t completely darkened yet.

Lu Huailin kept his eyes fixed on Gu Yihan. “I’ll walk you home.”

Gu Yihan noticed how tense he looked and couldn’t help smiling, suppressing a laugh. “Alright.”

They walked side by side. Lu Huailin glanced at her from the side as she drew closer. “So… can I submit our marriage application tomorrow?”

Gu Yihan thought for a moment before asking, “I’ll still be working after we get married. If I go with the military, can my job be transferred?”

Lu Huailin restrained his excitement. “Yes. The military encourages spouses to follow soldiers and will make work arrangements convenient.”

Gu Yihan still looked a bit concerned, tilting her head toward him. “It won’t be that I arrive at the base and still have to wait for them to arrange something, right?”

Lu Huailin explained patiently, “You already have a job, so it won’t take a slot meant for another military wife. There’s no waiting involved.”

“So after I return, I’ll have the logistics department check which factory is short-staffed and send you a transfer order from the machinery factory.”

Hearing Lu Huailin’s explanation, Gu Yihan finally relaxed.

The rest of the walk was quiet, and soon they arrived at her home.

They stopped at the gate. Lu Huailin, still reluctant to part, took the chance under the cover of night to hold Gu Yihan’s hand.

Gu Yihan felt his hand grasp hers. She didn’t say anything—after all, they had already agreed to get married. She was comfortable with a little intimacy.

Seeing that Gu Yihan didn’t resist, Lu Huailin beamed. “So it’s settled—I’ll submit the marriage application by telegram tomorrow. Once it’s approved, we’ll register.”

“As for the betrothal gifts, others may have them, but you should too. The three-turns-and-one-ring set, plus the savings I’ve kept aside, I’ll give to you.”

Saying this, Lu Huailin pulled two prepared bankbooks from his military pants pocket and handed them to Gu Yihan.

Gu Yihan looked at the bankbooks and took them, withdrawing her hand from his grasp. She opened them and was stunned by the numbers inside.

Lu Huailin watched her retract her hand and regretted giving her the bankbooks so early; he should have waited until they were about to part.

Gu Yihan’s eyes widened. “This much?”

Lu Huailin laughed. “I’ve been enlisted for ten years. I spend little. Most of it is salary, some is mission bonuses, all saved.”

Gu Yihan counted carefully. One bankbook had over eleven thousand, the other over seven thousand.

Even without looking at him, just by seeing the bankbooks, she knew he had risked his life to earn this money. This man was truly a worthy husband—saving diligently and giving everything to her.

She handed the bankbooks back. “You keep them for now. Give them to me after we register.”

Lu Huailin didn’t reach for them. “Since they’re for you, just hold onto them. It’s only a few days until the registration anyway.”

Seeing his insistence, Gu Yihan didn’t refuse. “Alright, I’ll keep them for now. It’s late, you should go home.”

Lu Huailin nodded reluctantly, glancing back at her every few steps.

Gu Yihan shook her head internally. Why did he have to be so clingy?

She took out her keys, unlocked the door, and walked into the yard with Maomao, closing the door behind them.

For several days after, Gu Yihan didn’t see Lu Huailin. That day at dinner, he had even promised to take her to the movies.

If it weren’t for the bankbooks in her space, she would have thought he was joking.

Outside the Machinery Factory

“Comrade Gu, wait!”

Hearing the shout, Gu Yihan and Maomao turned. It was the stepson who had come with Teacher Shen that day.

The young man panted heavily. “Comrade Gu, hello. I’m Xing Xiaofeng—you can call me Xiaofeng.”

Maomao bared his teeth immediately. “Woof, woof.”

Xing Xiaofeng winced. The spot Maomao had stepped on was still sore.

He hurriedly turned to Gu Yihan. “Comrade Gu, I want to cooperate with you.”

“Cooperate?” Gu Yihan’s eyes were puzzled.

Xing Xiaofeng nodded repeatedly. “Yes! You don’t get along with the tigress your dad married, right? We can have a fake marriage. You’ll get to annoy her every day.”

Gu Yihan stared at him dumbfounded. “Are you out of your mind? Marry me? Let your stepmother, as an elder, openly bully me?”

Xing Xiaofeng: “…Why didn’t I think of that?”

Gu Yihan ignored him and walked past, Maomao by her side.

Xing Xiaofeng chased after her. “But I did save you!”

Gu Yihan stopped, her eyes calm and sharp. “You saved me? Probably only in your dreams. Go home and keep dreaming.”

Seeing her disdain, Xing Xiaofeng shouted, “I had my dad block Shen Zihan from hurting you! Otherwise, how do you think the Zhou family from Gujia Village found you so easily?”

Gu Yihan’s eyes turned cold. “Then I can’t cooperate with you. You’ve got the wrong person.”

Desperate, Xing Xiaofeng grabbed her arm. “Why are you so stubborn? Marry me, and you could take revenge…”

Suddenly, Lu Huailin appeared and gripped Xing Xiaofeng’s wrist, squeezing hard.

“Ow…! Let go!” Xing Xiaofeng yelled, pain shooting through him.

Gu Yihan looked at Lu Huailin. “When did you get here?”

Lu Huailin nodded slightly at her, calmly: “Was he bothering you?”

Xing Xiaofeng barely noticed their words; his wrist felt like it was broken.

“I’m her target, you blind?!” he shouted.

“Ow… it hurts! Let go, my wrist will break!”

Lu Huailin’s eyes narrowed. Coldly, he said, “Since when did my wife become your ‘target’?”

He punched Xing Xiaofeng in the stomach, twisting his wrist. Crack!—Xing Xiaofeng’s arm dislocated.

Gu Yihan stepped next to him, holding his arm. “Alright, you misunderstood.”

Lu Huailin looked at her with a protesting gaze.

Gu Yihan saw the look and realized it said clearly: I feel wronged.

She had no choice but to hold his hand. “I don’t know him. He’s my old teacher’s stepson. And Maomao is here with me—nobody can bully me.”

Maomao immediately circled around them.

Lu Huailin released Xing Xiaofeng’s wrist.

Gu Yihan finally relaxed. “He’s not worth hurting.”

Xing Xiaofeng: “….”

Holding Lu Huailin’s hand, Gu Yihan looked at the arm he was holding. “You should go to the hospital and get it checked. Trying to marry someone to get back at your stepmother is childish. You should convince your dad first. If your dad supports you, he won’t side with your stepmother.”

Without waiting for a response, she pulled Lu Huailin along, walking side by side.

Lu Huailin looked down at her hand in his. A small smile tugged at his lips. “The marriage application has been approved. We can register tomorrow.”

Gu Yihan let go of his hand. “Then you come pick me up for the civil affairs office tomorrow.”

Lu Huailin’s eyes sparkled with joy as he nodded.
