The next day.

Gu Yihan was the first to arrive at the office. She took the keys out of her shoulder bag and unlocked the door.

Just as she finished tidying up the office, Sister Li came in.

Sister Li placed her bag on the table and looked at Gu Yihan. “Xiao Han, you’re quite early today.”

Gu Yihan smiled at her. “It’s my turn to clean today.”

Sister Li slapped her forehead. “If you hadn’t said it, I’d have forgotten. Tomorrow it’s my turn.”

Sister Zhang ran into Liu Yang at the entrance of the machinery factory, and they walked in together.

Liu Yang was especially happy today. “Congratulate me! My wife is pregnant!”

Gu Yihan was surprised. “So soon? Haven’t you only been married for a month?”

Sister Li teased Liu Yang ambiguously, “That proves little Liu is impressive, huh? So capable, got his wife pregnant so quickly.”

Gu Yihan: “…”

Sister Zhang glared at Sister Li. “Alright, say less. Xiao Han isn’t married yet.”

Tang Jiaojiao bounced into the office, then circled around and said, “Guess who I saw yesterday?”

“Who?” Sister Li asked quickly.

“Yesterday my mom was on duty at the hospital, so I went to bring her lunch. I ran into our machinery factory’s Deputy Director Shen from the workshop.”

Tang Jiaojiao shook her head as she spoke. “Tsk tsk, both his legs are broken. And he told my mom he fell down the stairs.”

“He didn’t even check who my mom is. She’s the top orthopedist at the hospital. Just by touching him, she could tell he was lying.”

Liu Yang winced as he listened. “Both legs? Was it revenge?”

Tang Jiaojiao rolled her eyes at him and returned to her seat.

Liu Yang awkwardly scratched his nose and didn’t ask further.

Ever since Liu Yang got married, Tang Jiaojiao realized her own crush was misplaced. Unless work required it, they didn’t speak.

Sister Li sighed. “Even though Deputy Director Shen is the workshop’s deputy, the production line is busy. I don’t think he can handle the position.”

Gu Yihan was communicating with her system using her mind. “System, aren’t you supposed to protect my life?”

“Do you have any kind of potion that makes me really strong, so I can protect myself?”

The mutated hamster in the system almost laughed—where would it have something to boost physical strength?

The mechanical voice of the hamster sounded: “This system does not have it. Anything unrelated to your life safety is not available.”

Gu Yihan frowned. “You have a super strength mode, so why no strength-enhancing potion?”

The mutated hamster was furious—super strength mode consumes its mental energy.

The mechanical voice sounded again: “Super strength mode only activates when your life is in danger.”

Gu Yihan muttered in her heart: “Why do other people’s systems have everything, and hers is so useless?”

“You’ve seen how many systems? I’m unique, no one else can match me,” the hamster in the space rolled its eyes.

“Don’t eavesdrop on my thoughts,” Gu Yihan threatened.

The mutated hamster internally complained: “Do you think I want to eavesdrop on your thoughts?”

“If it weren’t for you, Gu Yihan, suddenly claiming the space, we wouldn’t have been bound together.”

The calm workday passed quickly.

Today was Gu Yihan’s 18th birthday. After work, she walked to the entrance of the machinery factory and from a distance saw a man in military uniform standing with Maomao.

When Lu Huailin saw Gu Yihan, he quickly walked up to her, took a lipstick out of his pocket, and handed it to her. “Happy Birthday.”

Gu Yihan took the lipstick and looked at him in confusion. “How did you know it’s my birthday today?”

Lu Huailin’s eyes held a smile. “Uncle Fu told me.”

Gu Yihan suddenly remembered that last time when she reported the spy, she had recorded a statement and provided identity information.

Lu Huailin looked at her. “Let’s have a meal. We need to talk.”

Gu Yihan thought for a moment, then nodded. “Okay.”

They went together to the state-run restaurant and found a window seat. Gu Yihan stood by the window and told Maomao to stay put.

Lu Huailin ordered braised pork, shredded potatoes, and pickled fish for both, and separately ordered longevity noodles for Gu Yihan.

Seeing Gu Yihan’s worried look, he said softly: “Maomao is very smart. It won’t wander off.”

Gu Yihan gave him a look that said it all. “You can just talk normally. No need to whisper.”

Lu Huailin: “…”

He made a mental note to train harder with the guys next time—they said women liked soft-spoken and gentle men.

Using a normal tone, Lu Huailin said: “Comrade Gu Yihan, do you agree that we establish a deep revolutionary friendship?”

Gu Yihan didn’t answer that question directly.

Instead, she brought up what Uncle Fu had helped with last time: “Last time I heard from Uncle Fu that he knows about our relationship.”

Lu Huailin looked at Gu Yihan seriously. “I personally and as a soldier guarantee—I have never announced our relationship without your consent. I only asked Uncle Fu to keep an eye on things for you, in case you need help.”

Gu Yihan finally relaxed and said: “We’ve spent too little time together to really understand each other. I don’t want my partner to disrespect me or make decisions without consulting me.”

Lu Huailin understood her meaning and immediately replied: “After I asked you last time, I wrote a marriage report. I originally planned to submit it after you agreed. Later, I had an urgent mission and left. I came straight to you upon returning.”

He continued: “So the marriage report hasn’t been submitted without your consent. This time I just want to confirm with you. If you agree, I will submit the marriage report directly.”

Gu Yihan thought for a moment. “Have your parents agreed to our marriage?”

Seeing Gu Yihan soften, Lu Huailin quickly said: “My parents don’t interfere in who I marry. They work in Beijing and won’t live with us. My older brother and sister are married and live their own lives. We only contact them during the New Year.”

Gu Yihan was pleased that he didn’t live with his parents.

She spoke about her own situation: “My grandma treats me very well. I send her a monthly pension. Later, I want to bring her to live with us.”

Seeing that Gu Yihan only mentioned her grandmother, Lu Huailin assumed her relationships with others weren’t very close and didn’t ask further.

Looking into her eyes, Lu Huailin said seriously: “I got promoted to full regiment rank earlier this year. My salary is 141 yuan. After marriage, you manage it all. You can spend it freely without consulting me.”

Gu Yihan smiled and nodded at him.

Seeing that she didn’t ask further questions, Lu Huailin looked at her excitedly. “You agree?”

Gu Yihan nodded. “I still have a few conditions.”

Lu Huailin looked at her with a smile. “What conditions?”

Gu Yihan looked at him seriously. “I know your military training is tough. But I hope that after you come home, we share household chores. Marriage isn’t just my responsibility.”

Lu Huailin nodded. “No problem. I usually take care of things myself anyway.”

Lowering her head, Gu Yihan added: “I hope that whenever you’re home, you give me a hug before leaving every day. After all, we don’t have a foundation of feelings yet, so both of us need to work on it.”

Lu Huailin’s ears turned red. He looked at her and promised: “As long as I don’t have a mission, I’ll do it every day.”

After speaking, to hide his blushing, he stood and said: “I’ll go get the dishes.”

Gu Yihan watched him and smiled.
