Gu Yihan walked to the entrance of the steel plant and saw Maomao anxiously pacing around the main gate. She called out, “Maomao.”

When Maomao saw Gu Yihan, he dashed to her, standing on his hind legs and leaping toward her.

Gu Yihan pretended to be angry, pointing at his paw prints: “Your hooves are filthy. Tonight, you’re going to help me with something.”

Maomao tilted his head and barked, “Woof! Woof!”

Grabbing Maomao by the ears, Gu Yihan cheerfully said, “Come on, let’s go home.”

Once home, Gu Yihan immediately went to her bedroom and placed the ledger on the bed, silently thinking, “Collect.”

She stared at the ledger still lying on the bed, stunned. Why couldn’t she now retrieve things from her space remotely? Then how had the ledger gotten into her space before?

There wasn’t time to ponder it further. She found paper and pen and copied the ledger twice.

Late at night, Gu Yihan whispered, “Maomao.”

Maomao, awakened by her call, looked at her with a puzzled expression.

She whispered, “Come, let’s go do something big.”

Understanding they were going out, Maomao sprang up and shook his fur.

One girl and her dog quietly made their way to Director Luo’s mansion. Gu Yihan noticed that the lights on the second floor were still on. She pondered how to get the ledger inside.

Ah, a slingshot! she suddenly realized, smacking her forehead. She immediately pulled out the slingshot she had scavenged from the scrap station in her space.

She picked up a stone from the ground, wrapped it together with the ledger in a cloth, placed it in the slingshot, squinted, pulled back the leather strap, and shot it straight at the illuminated window.

Thud! Something dropped to the floor. Director Luo shouted, “Who’s there?” He rushed to the window and looked down, but all was dark.

He bent down to pick up the cloth bundle. Thud! The stone fell out. He held the ledger in his hands, puzzled, and opened it. Seeing the contents, his hands gradually tightened, and he ground his teeth: “He won’t let these national pests go unpunished…”

Seeing that the ledger had been delivered via slingshot, Gu Yihan immediately crouched and, bowing low, quietly scurried out of the mansion area with Maomao.

The next morning, Gu Yihan got up early. She cooked porridge using water from the small puddle in her space and ate two buns.

She changed into a newly made white shirt, black pants, and tied her hair into a bun. Planning to update her style, she admired herself in the mirror. “Looking good,” she thought.

“Maomao, let’s go.” she called.

At the gate of the machinery plant, several female workshop workers saw her and asked, “Officer Gu, are you looking for a partner? Let me tell you…”

Gu Yihan walked past them with a cold sneer: “Those crooked, ugly ones in your families don’t meet my standards.”

One female worker spat at her back: “Hmph, fox spirit, acting all high and mighty!”

Another, with ill intentions, said, “Nowadays, making her marry isn’t hard. A woman without her purity is worthless.”

Many male colleagues’ eyes darted around, all aware that marrying Gu Yihan meant a house, a job, and a beautiful wife.

Gu Yihan pushed open the door to the accounting office and went straight to her workstation. She had realized that no one could fire her casually, so she enjoyed showing them that they couldn’t bring her down.

Liu Yang handed her the HR transfer list: “Xiaohan, the personnel changes this month are bigger than before.”

Gu Yihan took the list and glanced through it.

Liu Yang leaned close to her, and when he spoke, his breath hit her ear. Gu Yihan immediately stood and said coolly, “Comrade Liu, you have bad breath. Step back.”

She left the office to wash her face. Liu Yang froze in shock, instinctively covering his mouth and sniffing: “No smell!”

Everyone in the office, except Accountant Zhuang, looked at him knowingly: “Wrong approach if you want to pursue her.”

Embarrassed, Liu Yang scratched his head: “You all noticed?”

Zhou Tingmei remarked dryly: “Your eyeballs almost popped out at her.”

Sister Li whispered: “You two really aren’t compatible.”

Liu Yang was about to argue when Gu Yihan returned, so he stayed quiet.

Seeing Sister Zhuang’s dark circles, Gu Yihan guessed she hadn’t slept all night searching for the ledger.

Before the end of the workday, a few public security officers burst into the accounting office. Everyone looked up at them.

One officer said: “We’re not here to disturb, just to ask Accountant Zhuang a few questions regarding a case.”

He walked to the pale Sister Zhuang: “Accountant Zhuang, please come with us. We need your help on a case.”

Sister Zhuang knew her secret was out but didn’t yet know who had stolen her ledger.

The officers led her away.

Gu Yihan watched them leave, a slight smile on her lips. She didn’t regret sending the ledger to Director Luo. She had never intended to harm anyone or act as an informant.

She was forced into this. Since arriving in this world, she had only one goal: reach a certain age, marry a suitable person, and live peacefully ever after.

But now her thinking had changed. Marrying anyone carelessly could mean her future children would face unequal treatment.

Since marriage was inevitable in this era, why not choose a different life?

Sister Li sighed: “What happened? It involved Accountant Zhuang?”

Since marrying Zhang Qiang, Zhou Tingmei had seen many things others didn’t. She sneered: “Probably not a small matter. Whether she gets out okay is unknown.”

As the workday ended, Gu Yihan packed up and headed out. “Comrade Gu Yihan, wait!”

Frowning, she asked, “Comrade Liu Yang, do you need something?”

His ears turned red: “Comrade Gu, I want to become your revolutionary husband.”

Seeing she didn’t respond, he hastily added: “Don’t worry, my family is harmonious. No mother-in-law issues, as you know.”

Gu Yihan replied calmly: “It’s because your family situation is special that I wouldn’t consider you.”

Liu Yang persisted: “Why not?”

Gu Yihan chuckled: “If I married you, I’d be the only outsider in your family. Everyone else is an insider. If conflicts arise, I wouldn’t even know how I’d end up.”

Liu Yang assured her: “Don’t worry, my family is easy to get along with. Even if conflicts happen, I’d stand by your side. Trust me.”

Gu Yihan looked into the distance: “It’s not that I don’t trust you—it’s that I don’t trust myself. People’s thoughts change constantly. How long can you expect others to trust you?”

With that, she walked toward the gate of the machinery plant, leaving Liu Yang speechless.
