B5SB -Chapter 388 Mother Zheng’s Regret

Born in the ’50s, Switched at Birth7 min read388 of 394

Sister Lu came out of the family quarters and returned to the city.

She stood amidst the bustling crowd, looking utterly lost, with nowhere to go.

She didn’t want to go to Father Lu’s house.

Nor did she want to go to Brother Lu’s home.

In Sister Lu’s mind, as a married daughter, it was inappropriate to visit her natal family during the New Year.

Otherwise, she would be looked down upon by her in-laws.

Thinking of Zheng Huan, Sister Lu felt a sharp pain in her chest, struggling to breathe, and tears uncontrollably welled up and spilled over.

Wasn’t it just that she had accidentally misplaced his research materials? And she had found them in the end.

So why was Zheng Huan so cruel as to punish her with divorce?

Unconsciously, she found herself standing in front of the Zheng family home.

“Bang, bang, bang.”

Hearing the knocking, Mother Zheng assumed her youngest son and daughter-in-law had returned and opened the door with a cheerful smile.

But when she saw Sister Lu standing outside, the smile on her face instantly vanished, and without a second thought, she tried to shut the door immediately.

Quick as lightning, Sister Lu blocked the door with her feet and hands, looking at Mother Zheng with a wronged expression. “Mom…”

“Shut up!”

“Who are you calling ‘mom’!”

Mother Zheng scolded harshly.

Seeing Mother Zheng turn away coldly and refuse to acknowledge her, Sister Lu’s eyes immediately reddened again.

“Mom, I’ve been married into the Zheng family for over ten years, I’ve been filial to my in-laws, taken care of Zheng Huan, and been kind to my younger brothers-in-law. You can’t reject me just because I made one mistake.”

Hearing this, Mother Zheng glared at Sister Lu with bloodshot eyes.

Shouting sharply: “One little mistake?!”

“You wanted to ruin my son’s future and disgrace his reputation!”

After speaking, she forcefully grabbed the door handle to shut the door.

Tearfully, Sister Lu shook her head vigorously while holding onto the door.

She shouted loudly, “Mom, your daughter-in-law knows her mistake! I won’t dare do it again! Can’t you please not drive me away?”

Hearing Sister Lu’s hysterical cries, a neighbor opened their door and peeked outside.

Seeing this, Mother Zheng gave her a look of disgust.

During the New Year, she was deliberately standing at the doorstep crying, wanting outsiders to see and think the Zheng family abused their daughter-in-law.

At that moment, Zheng’s father came out, glanced at Sister Lu, and said to Mother Zheng, “Let her in first.”

Mother Zheng nodded, giving Sister Lu a cold glance before turning back to the living room.

Seeing that Zheng’s father allowed her in, Sister Lu wiped her cheeks and smiled at him gratefully.

She hurried inside and carefully closed the door behind her.

Then she went straight to Zheng’s father and mother.

Thud! She knelt before them.

“Dad, Mom, I beg you, please talk to Zheng Huan, and ask him not to divorce me.”

Zheng’s father adjusted his glasses, lowered his eyes, making it impossible to read his emotions.

In a deep voice, he said: “You knew how important Zheng Huan’s work is, yet you deliberately threw away years of his research manuscripts in the study!”

Hearing this, Sister Lu stiffened and trembled, lips quivering as she explained: “I didn’t know those materials belonged to Zheng Huan; I thought they were his junior female colleague’s…”

She had assumed that Zheng Huan’s junior female colleague had intentionally brought those materials to get close to him.

So she had let jealousy get the better of her for a moment.

Hearing this, Mother Zheng suddenly stood up, eyes blazing with fury: “Just because it was my son’s junior colleague’s materials, you could throw them away?!”

“Do you know how important the Third Front construction projects are?”

“Do you know that my son would sacrifice his life for national development, and yet you threw away his painstaking research?!”

“You still want us to forgive you and hope my son won’t divorce you?!”

“I’m telling you, not a chance!”

Mother Zheng felt like her lungs were about to explode. If killing weren’t illegal, she would have throttled Sister Lu right then and there.

Sister Lu didn’t care about the harsh words from Mother Zheng, knowing that in the end, it was Zheng’s father who held the final say.

Thinking quickly, she lifted her head and looked at Zheng’s father with a wronged expression.

In a quiet voice: “Dad, I know I was wrong. I won’t be jealous anymore. I won’t interfere with Zheng Huan and his junior colleague.”

“I won’t make the same mistake again. Please, convince Zheng Huan to give me another chance.”

After speaking, Sister Lu lowered her head, quietly sobbing with a face full of grievance.

Hearing this, Zheng’s father squinted slightly. He had never imagined that even at this point, Sister Lu was still entangled in romantic feelings!

She had never thought that if the materials weren’t recovered, her fate would have been execution as a spy!

Even the Zheng family would have been implicated by her stupidity.

Mother Zheng’s vision went black from anger. How could she have been so blind to let her eldest son marry such a woman?

“Stay here for now. We’ll discuss it after the New Year.”

Hearing this, Mother Zheng was nearly hopping mad, but Zheng’s father held her firmly, signaling her to calm down first.

At this moment, hearing that Zheng’s father had allowed her to stay, Sister Lu’s heart was nearly overwhelmed with joy.

She didn’t think twice and hurriedly kowtowed in thanks.

Seeing this, Zheng’s father’s expression changed.

Annoyed, he rubbed his twitching temples. It was New Year’s, and he didn’t want things with the Lu family to become too unpleasant.

After the holiday, he would personally send Sister Lu back to the Lu family.

Family Quarters

Gu Yihan sat on the sofa after the New Year’s Eve dinner, watching Haohao play with Dahuo and sighing: “Time flies so fast!”

“After today, it will be 1976 tomorrow. Haohao, you’re already six years old.”

Haohao paused, frowning slightly, dissatisfied: “Time is going so slowly. When will I grow up?”

Pfft.

Gu Yihan couldn’t help but laugh. Smiling, she said: “You want to grow up now, but when you do, you’ll want to go back to being little.”

Lu Huailin came out of Mother Lu’s bedroom and saw his wife and Haohao having fun together.

The corners of his mouth lifted slightly as he suddenly scooped them both up into his arms.

Gu Yihan was startled and glared at him: “You’ll hurt our waists!”

Haohao happily wrapped one arm around Lu Huailin and shouted excitedly: “Wow, Daddy’s amazing!”

New Year’s Eve passed in laughter and joy with the whole family together.

New Year’s Day

Little Haohao woke up early, had breakfast, and called over the neighbor Zhao Hu to visit friends and wish them a happy New Year.

Gu Yihan had a nightmare last night but couldn’t remember it upon waking.

She just felt a heavy weight in her chest, so she asked Lu Huailin to get a day off from the service station for her.

She sat in the yard basking in the sun and looked up to see Bai Yun approaching, her face full of smiles.

Quickly, Gu Yihan pulled over a nearby bench and cheerfully greeted her: “Aunt Bai, when did you come back?”

Bai Yun smiled and sat down beside Gu Yihan.

“Came back yesterday, leaving this afternoon!”

After speaking, she held Gu Yihan’s hand tightly and said gratefully: “I never got the chance to thank you properly before!”

Gu Yihan was momentarily stunned, then smiled: “Aunt Bai, getting into the shirt factory was all thanks to your own abilities!”

Bai Yun smiled but didn’t say anything further. She knew Gu Yihan might not place much importance on her help.

But she herself could never forget—it was Gu Yihan who had reached out and helped her in her most difficult time.
