Eldest Sister Lu took the enamel cup that Lai Di handed over and looked up at Lu Huailin going downstairs.
She snorted coldly: “You’re living better than Dad, a retired man.”
Then, glancing at Lai Di standing quietly by her side, she added sarcastically: “And now you even have a nanny!”
Lu Huailin saw that it was Eldest Sister Lu knocking on the door so early in the morning.
He gave her an impatient glance and snapped: “How did you get in?”
Eldest Sister Lu noticed that Lu Huailin showed no sign of happiness upon seeing her; his expression carried disdain.
Her heart immediately sank, and with a loud bang, she slammed the ceramic cup heavily onto the wooden tea table.
She demanded harshly: “Huailin, what do you mean by this?!
“Do I have to report to you in advance before I come to your house? Or am I not even allowed to come?”
Lu Huailin cast a glance at Eldest Sister Lu, whose face was full of anger, and narrowed his eyes.
He said coldly: “If you want to go crazy, go back to your own house. Don’t go crazy in mine!”
Eldest Sister Lu’s eyes widened in disbelief. She stared at Lu Huailin, her lips trembling.
“You… how can you be so heartless? I didn’t even call out to you, and now you’re telling me to get lost!”
Suddenly, Eldest Sister Lu seemed to recall something. She shouted toward the second floor: “Was it that woman, Gu Yihan, who instigated you?”
Then her expression twisted into a vicious scowl: “No wonder! Huaixu said that you changed completely after getting married. You only have eyes for that girl no one wants. Don’t you realize her own mother was so malicious that she would even swap children? Gu Yihan has that kind of inheritance, her cruelty might even surpass her biological mother. And yet…”
Slap!
Lu Huailin had reached his limit. He slapped Eldest Sister Lu hard across the face, his gaze piercing.
His words were icy: “Elder Sister, since you look down on me this much, our sibling relationship ends here!”
Instinctively, Eldest Sister Lu pressed her burning cheek and looked up at the expressionless Lu Huailin.
She never imagined that her own younger brother would hit her.
Tears streamed down her face; the pain in her heart far outweighed the sting on her cheek.
Through her tearful eyes, she glared at Lu Huailin and shouted angrily: “For a stranger, you would sever ties with your own sister!”
“Hmph.”
Hearing the cold snort, Lu Huailin looked up and saw his wife standing on the second floor, her face cold, watching him and Eldest Sister Lu with a sneer.
His heart tightened.
He didn’t want her to misunderstand.
He immediately turned to Eldest Sister Lu and said sternly: “My wife is not a stranger. She is the most important person in my life, the one I will spend my life with. She is family—what affects her affects me. And when you look down on her, you cease to be my family.”
Eldest Sister Lu staggered back in shock at Lu Huailin’s words.
Decades of sibling ties were worth less than a stranger he had only been married to for a few years.
Lu Huailin didn’t care what Eldest Sister Lu thought. Today, his words were as sharp as poison.
He said whatever was harshest.
“You’re kind-hearted and good, yet you were thrown out by Zheng Huan after the divorce. My wife, she has a lover who cherishes her, treasures her, and will never abandon her. She has a lively and lovely son, and in the future will have a house full of descendants. And you? Alone, with nothing but yourself!”
After hearing from their father yesterday that Eldest Sister Lu had divorced, he had decided to cut ties with her.
Better to avoid her causing trouble, spoiling others’ happiness.
Eldest Sister Lu’s face went pale; her body trembled, and she instinctively stepped back.
Lu Huailin knew that what he cared most about were his child and Zheng Huan, yet he deliberately stabbed at her heart.
Lai Di glanced at Eldest Sister Lu and curled his lips.
She really didn’t understand the situation. She didn’t even realize that such a commotion couldn’t go unheard.
Clearly, their mother would have heard their argument.
Yet, although she could hear everything, there was no sound from her inside.
This proved that Mother Lu silently sided with Gu Yihan to please Lu Huailin.
Lu Huailin didn’t care about Eldest Sister Lu’s feelings. He made a call to the sentries at the gate.
He scolded them for letting a stranger into the residential compound and ordered them to come immediately and escort Eldest Sister Lu out.
Eldest Sister Lu cried silently, regretting having angered Lu Huailin.
She had come at the start of the year, not to quarrel. She wanted Lu Huailin to speak for her at the Zheng house, to stop Zheng Huan from divorcing her.
But somehow, things had escalated to this point.
Soon, two sentries arrived. They saluted Lu Huailin first, then glanced at Eldest Sister Lu, still silently crying.
Embarrassed, they scratched their heads and awkwardly explained: “Commander Lu, the commander said this lady is your elder sister.”
Lu Huailin gave Eldest Sister Lu a look. She had come all this way, persuaded their father to help her, all just to try to stir trouble between him and his wife?
Seeing Lu Huailin’s cold silence, the sentries quickly escorted Eldest Sister Lu out.
Eldest Sister Lu didn’t want to leave; her purpose wasn’t fulfilled. She opened her mouth to ask Lu Huailin for help, but worried he wouldn’t agree while still angry.
The sentries, having no patience, roughly pulled her out, ignoring her hesitations.
Haohao stood behind Gu Yihan, having heard all of Eldest Sister Lu’s words. He furrowed his small brows.
Seeing the annoying woman leave, he tightly held his mother’s hand and pulled her downstairs.
Lu Huailin didn’t notice Haohao’s little expression. Smiling, he took his wife’s hand.
“Don’t worry, wife. I’ll never let Elder Sister come to our house again.”
“Dad, why is it that in our family, besides Grandpa, there isn’t a single normal person?!”
Haohao’s childish voice rang out, full of dissatisfaction.
Lu Huailin paused for a moment, then lowered his head and patted Haohao on the head.
He explained with a smile: “It’s because our family is too happy; it makes them uncomfortable.”
Haohao, too young to fully understand, asked in confusion: “Why would they feel uncomfortable?”
Lu Huailin bent down, picking up Haohao, and sat on the sofa.
He thought for a moment, then patiently explained: “If Dad hadn’t married, I wouldn’t care where the money goes. Your uncle and aunt could freely get benefits from Grandpa and Dad. But since Dad married, the benefits they get from Grandpa are less. Dad also protects his own little family and is careful with money, not giving it away carelessly. So when you grow up and have your own little family, you’ll have to learn the same: to judge the people around you carefully. Focus on your own family and trust your wife. Don’t let so-called friends mislead you. If your marriage is troubled, they have a chance to profit from you.”
This was a lesson Lu Huailin only realized after marriage.
Before marriage, he sent money every year to Mother Lu and bought gifts for Lu’s eldest brother’s child, Miao Miao.
Even if he couldn’t go home for New Year, he would still send red envelopes because Miao Miao was the only young family member at home.
All the money he sent ended up in Lu’s eldest brother’s family’s pockets.
After marriage, household money went to his wife.
Mother Lu and Miao Miao could no longer get benefits from him. Though they didn’t complain, they certainly felt uneasy.
They blamed it on his wife, thinking she was blocking their fortune.
