B5SB -Chapter 364 Property Deed

Born in the ’50s, Switched at Birth6 min read364 of 394

In the blink of an eye, the weekend had arrived.

After lunch, Haohao and Zhao Hu were chasing the big rooster around the yard, laughing and making a ruckus.

Auntie Zhang and Fu Ling sat on the sofa, discussing which parts of the design plans needed modification.

Gu Yihan carried a plate of cut watermelon and walked over to them with a smile, teasing: “Auntie, Sister Ling, have some fruit first to cool down.”

Fu Ling now came to the family compound almost every month and had already become familiar with Gu Yihan.

Without any ceremony, she took a piece of watermelon and started eating it with her head down, not caring about appearances.

Seeing this, Auntie Zhang laughed, reaching for a small slice of watermelon herself and took a couple of bites.

Looking up at Gu Yihan, who was nibbling at her slice, she said with a smile: “Xiaohan, only you would be willing to buy this.”

Gu Yihan chuckled and explained: “Auntie, watermelon isn’t expensive—seven cents per jin.”

Auntie Zhang glanced at the remaining watermelon on the table and estimated that, before it was cut, it must have weighed at least eight jin.

Fifty-six cents—not exactly cheap.

After finishing her piece, Gu Yihan walked to the doorway and called to Haohao and Zhao Hu in the yard: “Haohao, Huzi is going to have some watermelon.”

Haohao responded: “Coming!”

Zhao Hu said: “Oh, watermelon time!”

The two ran in, one after the other.

Gu Yihan had them sit on small stools so they could eat without dripping juice all over themselves.

Seeing Zhao Hu eat ravenously, as if he had never had watermelon in his life, Auntie Zhang quickly patted his arm: “Eat slower.”

Zhao Hu didn’t respond, completely absorbed in eating.

Auntie Zhang watched, shaking her head in disbelief. Her family wasn’t poor—how could they have raised such a glutton?

After finishing, Fu Ling pulled out the handkerchief she always carried and wiped her hands.

“By the way, Xiaohan, I’ve run into a military spouse named Bai Yun several times at the family compound. Do you know her?”

Auntie Zhang was startled. She didn’t remember ever mentioning Bai Yun in front of Fu Ling. How did she know her?

Gu Yihan didn’t think much of it and smiled: “Yes, I know her. She’s my neighbor.”

“Oh, are you two close? Not really. Even though we’re neighbors, we don’t talk much.”

Fu Ling nodded thoughtfully. Since Gu Yihan said they weren’t close, next time she ran into Bai Yun, she could just refuse politely. That way, she wouldn’t risk a stranger ruining the relationship she’d built with Gu Yihan.

Elsewhere, at the Kun City military family compound:

Li Yajing was taking a nap when she suddenly heard a loud “Bang! Bang! Bang!” on the door. She assumed it was Shen Yifei back home.

Annoyed, she sat up and muttered while walking toward the door: “Cousin, can’t you just use a key yourself…”

“Xiaoya.”

Her words froze mid-sentence.

Holding her breath, she feared the familiar voice she’d just heard was a hallucination.

“Xiaoya.”

Hearing the voice again, Li Yajing dashed like the wind to the door.

With a clatter, she quickly opened it—and saw her father and mother, their faces weathered with age.

“Dad, Mom, it really is you!”

Unable to hold back, she threw herself into her mother’s arms and burst into tears.

Her mother hugged her tightly, her rough hands gently patting her back.

“Xiaoya, we’re sorry—it was your dad and mom who got you involved in this. If it weren’t for us, you wouldn’t have divorced Zhengfan.”

Lin Yifei, standing behind Li Yajing’s parents, sighed: “Yajing, let Auntie and Uncle in first.”

Li Yajing’s father noticed the neighbors peeking at them curiously. He quickly agreed: “Yes, let’s go inside first.”

Li Yajing wiped her tears, nodded, and said: “Dad, Mom, let’s go inside.”

Lin Yifei went straight to the kitchen to pour them a glass of water.

Coming out, he heard Li Yajing crying and saying: “I knew it—Xiaohan wouldn’t just ignore you.”

A hint of doubt flashed in her mother’s eyes: “Are you saying it was Gu Yihan who helped your dad and me transfer to the research institute in Beijing?”

“Yes. Her husband is already a division commander. It’s not surprising she could get help from the Beijing research institute.”

Hearing this, her mother’s face showed gratitude: “Xiaoya, let’s find some time to visit Gu and thank her as a family.”

Li Yajing’s father looked at the mother-daughter pair, puzzled.

“Is this the female comrade who saved Xiaoya twice?” he asked.

Her mother smiled and nodded: “Yes, every time Xiaoya ran into trouble, it was Comrade Gu who helped.”

Li Yajing thought of Gu Yihan and Maomao and nodded vigorously: “I feel like Xiaohan is my savior…”

Lin Yifei quietly set down the cup and sat across from her.

Suddenly, he interrupted: “Yajing, Xiaohan helped, but she didn’t tell you.”

“What do you mean by that?”

Li Yajing frowned and looked at Lin Yifei: “Cousin, what are you implying?”

Seeing Lin Yifei pursing his lips and not answering, her father exchanged a glance with her mother, guessing there might have been a misunderstanding between Yajing and Gu Yihan.

He quickly asked: “Yifei, did your cousin go begging Gu because of what happened with us?”

Lin Yifei glanced at Li Yajing and recounted all the ambiguous things she had said to Gu, as well as the conflicts involving Secretary Chang, Zeng Xiao, and Gu Yihan.

Upon hearing this, Li Yajing’s mother’s expression darkened. She turned and slapped Li Yajing’s hand: “You silly girl, are you out of your mind? Why can’t you speak directly? Why beat around the bush?”

Li Yajing looked at her mother, tears streaming down.

Through sobs, she said: “I was afraid that if I said it, Xiaohan would think I resented her for getting you involved.”

Seeing her daughter cry, Li Yajing’s father felt uncomfortable too.

He quickly tried to calm the situation: “Wife, say less. Yajing only did this to lessen our suffering.”

Her mother glared at him and ignored his comment.

Instead, she pulled a cloth-wrapped bundle from her pocket, unwrapping it layer by layer to reveal a thick stack of property deeds.

Li Yajing, seeing the large, book-sized bundle wrapped carefully, immediately forgot her tears. Her eyes widened with curiosity—what could be so valuable that her mother was so cautious?

“Mom, what treasure is this?”

Her mother glared and pulled out a deed: “Tomorrow, you’re going to Beijing with us. Then give this shop’s property deed to Gu Yihan.”

Li Yajing’s father’s face immediately turned cold: “You can’t give it away—that’s your dowry.”

Her mother shot him a glare and snorted: “It’s mine. I can give it to whoever I want!”

She handed the deed directly into Li Yajing’s hands.

Softly, she instructed: “Yajing, remember, even the best relationships involve give and take. One side cannot just give while the other takes for granted.”

Li Yajing was stunned. How had she never known the family had this?

She glanced at the deed—and when she saw it was for a 112-square-meter property in Beijing, she was completely dumbfounded.
