At the entrance of the Kun City courtyard compound
Gu Meng leaned sideways against the wall, cracking sunflower seeds with loud ka-cha sounds.
She cast a casual glance at Grandma Gu, who kept stretching her neck toward the alley entrance, waiting anxiously.
With a sneer, she said, “Grandma, don’t worry. Your precious little granddaughter won’t cut off your living expenses.”
Grandma Gu glanced at Gu Meng, who stood without any proper posture, and frowned deeply.
She subconsciously raised her hand to press against her stuffy chest.
These past few days, she had felt that something bad was about to happen. She didn’t know whether it had anything to do with Gu Yihan.
Seeing that Grandma Gu ignored her, Gu Meng curled her lips.
She turned her head and also stared at the alley entrance, hoping that the postman would appear on his bicycle the next second.
Though she looked calm on the surface, she was extremely nervous inside.
Gu Yihan’s living expenses for this month were already two days late compared to previous months.
She was worried that that little bitch Li Yajing had tipped Gu Yihan off.
At this thought, a cold glint flashed through Gu Meng’s eyes.
The people in the courtyard looked at Grandma Gu with envy and sighed.
“They say a married daughter is like water poured out—can’t be relied on.”
“Look at Auntie Gu. Even though it’s her granddaughter, she’s never missed a single month of support money.”
“She’s way better than sons who forget their mothers after getting married.”
Someone curled their lips and said, “Come on. Every family has daughters and granddaughters. How many are as filial as hers?”
“Exactly. I don’t expect my daughter to be like that, sending forty yuan every month without fail.”
“If she gave me ten yuan a month, I’d laugh myself awake in my dreams.”
Suddenly, a sarcastic voice rang out.
“I really don’t know whose ancestors Gu Yihan’s husband offended in his past life, to marry such a woman who steals from her own family.”
The lively crowd instantly fell silent and looked toward the newly moved-in young woman, Zeng Xiao.
One of the aunties stepped forward in disagreement.
“Comrade Zeng, how can you talk like that? A granddaughter being filial is only natural. How did it become ‘stealing’ in your mouth?”
Zeng Xiao glanced at her and giggled, then raised her arms and clapped twice loudly.
Deliberately raising her voice, she said, “Auntie, I wish your son finds a gentle, kind daughter-in-law who’s devoted to her natal family.”
“Let him give his entire salary every month to his mother-in-law’s family. Then you won’t need to envy Grandma Gu—you can just envy yourself.”
After speaking, she covered her mouth mockingly and gave the auntie a contemptuous glance.
The auntie’s face instantly darkened.
“You young woman—how can your mouth be so vicious?”
The surrounding people: “……”
Zeng Xiao chuckled and said bluntly, “Auntie, didn’t you say that being filial after marriage is only natural?”
“Then what—your daughter-in-law isn’t someone else’s daughter?”
The auntie was furious.
She rushed forward, trying to scratch Zeng Xiao’s smug face, but someone behind her quickly grabbed her.
They whispered urgently into her ear, “Auntie, Zeng Xiao’s father is a bureau chief in the Ministry of Industry.”
Hearing this, Zeng Xiao narrowed her eyes slightly. She hadn’t expected someone here to recognize her background.
Then she looked at the auntie, who was furious but dared not speak, sneered, lifted her chin, and walked past her proudly.
Ever since she learned that everyone in this courtyard had a great impression of Gu Yihan, she had been seething with hatred.
If Gu Yihan hadn’t refused to help Secretary Jiang, causing him to be fired from the factory, her father wouldn’t have used “political stains” and “no future prospects” as excuses to force her to divorce him.
All of this was Gu Yihan’s fault.
Before she even had the chance to take revenge, Gu Yihan had already left Kun City.
Thinking of this, she turned back and glanced at Grandma Gu, who was pacing at the entrance.
She sneered.
So what if Gu Yihan ran away? Wasn’t Grandma Gu still here?
“Ding-ling-ling…”
The postman stopped his bicycle in front of Grandma Gu, greeted her with a smile, and handed her a prepared letter.
The moment Grandma Gu saw him, her inner panic instantly settled.
She nodded perfunctorily, took the envelope, and hurriedly tore it open.
When she saw the lone banknote inside, her heart sank.
Unwilling to give up, she trembled as she checked it again and again.
Only one bill.
After the postman left, Gu Meng flicked away her sunflower seed shells and walked over.
Stretching out her hand, she said with a grin, “Grandma, give me five yuan. I’ve got my eye on a really pretty lipstick.”
Grandma Gu’s face turned cold.
“No money.”
She walked past Gu Meng and headed back into the courtyard.
Gu Meng froze for a moment.
Seeing Grandma Gu leave without paying her any attention, she stomped angrily.
“You old dead thing! You eat my family’s food and live in my family’s house. What’s wrong with spending a little of your money?”
Hearing this, Grandma Gu stopped.
Endless regret surged in her heart.
Bringing Gu Meng back was the decision she regretted most in her entire life.
She had thought Gu Meng would be grateful.
Who knew she would not only be ungrateful, but also resent her?
She believed Grandma Gu and Gu Yihan had joined forces to send her to the labor farm.
Turning around, Grandma Gu warned, “To rescue you, I spent all my savings.”
“Enough, stop pretending to be poor,” Gu Meng interrupted impatiently.
Grandma Gu was so angry she nearly fainted.
She took a deep breath, suppressed her frustration, and turned away.
Gu Meng sneered and hurried forward.
While Grandma Gu wasn’t paying attention, she quickly snatched the envelope.
When she saw there were only five yuan inside, she froze.
Then she looked up sharply.
“Why is there only five yuan?”
“Where did you hide the rest?”
Grandma Gu glanced at her coldly, sarcasm flashing in her eyes.
“This month, there’s only five yuan.”
Gu Meng’s face darkened instantly.
Grinding her teeth, she cursed, “That bitch Li Yajing!”
Grandma Gu frowned slightly.
“What does this have to do with Li Yajing?”
Gu Meng shot her a cold look.
“You’ve lived with Gu Yihan for so long and still don’t know that Li Yajing is her good friend?”
“How do you know?” Grandma Gu asked.
Annoyed by her stupidity, Gu Meng said coldly, “I overheard Hu Shan mention it once.”
Grandma Gu didn’t think about Li Yajing secretly tipping Gu Yihan off.
Her mind was now full of thoughts about where Gu Yihan lived in the capital.
She wanted to write a letter and ask why her support money had been reduced.
