The next day.
After finishing the breakfast that Lu Huailin had prepared for her, Gu Yihan tidied up and pushed her bicycle out the door.
“Sister-in-law, going to work?”
Just as she had locked the courtyard gate, Gu Yihan looked up and saw Zhang Xia smiling at her. She nodded.
Zhang Xia awkwardly scratched her head and asked softly, “Sister-in-law, I want to go to the supply and marketing cooperative. It’s on your way—could you give me a ride for a bit?”
Gu Yihan’s eyes flicked to Zhang Xia’s stomach with caution.
“I’m sorry, Comrade Zhang. I’m not very skilled at riding a bike, so I can’t take anyone with me.”
With that, she pushed off and rode away in a blur.
Watching Gu Yihan’s back disappear, Zhang Xia’s expression darkened.
She had only wanted to hitch a ride on her bike to save a few steps, but she hadn’t expected her to be so unaccommodating.
Meanwhile, Gu Yihan pushed open the accounting office door and greeted Hu Shan, Wang Guixiang, and Zhang Limin lightly.
Seeing Gu Yihan’s expressionless face, Hu Shan couldn’t help but ask worriedly, “Xiaohan, why didn’t you come to work yesterday?”
Thinking of Maomao, Gu Yihan felt a pang in her nose and replied perfunctorily, “I had some things to take care of yesterday.”
“Yesterday, Zhao Ju from HR came over and said you had taken leave. We were quite surprised,” Zhang Limin said with a smile.
Gu Yihan’s hand holding the enamel cup froze. She hadn’t heard any news about Zhao Ju for a long time.
“She’s back at work?”
“Yes. I heard she sent her twins to the daycare, so she started coming to work herself,” Hu Shan explained proactively, knowing that both Gu Yihan and Zhao Ju were military wives and had a good relationship.
Gu Yihan nodded, “Mm,” and stood up to go to the water room.
Seeing this, Hu Shan immediately grabbed her enamel cup and followed her toward the water room.
Along the way, she kept glancing at Gu Yihan, wanting to speak but unsure how.
After all, it wasn’t something proud or honorable—it was embarrassing.
Gu Yihan looked at Hu Shan curiously. “Sister Shan, do you have something to say?”
Hu Shan looked up at Gu Yihan and took a deep breath.
Kicking at a small stone on the ground, she said, “Xiaohan, I suspect that Jingjing might be Ye Qingqing and Cheng Bo’s child.”
Gu Yihan raised her eyebrows in surprise. “Suspect?”
“Sister Shan, how did you figure that out?”
She was stunned. Had Hu Shan’s intelligence finally overcome her love-blinded mind? Had she finally noticed Cheng Bo’s strangeness?
Hu Shan tilted her head, making a face even uglier than crying.
Tears threatened to spill, and she tilted her head back.
Her voice quivered with sobs: “Cheng Bo said the girl he was looking for was Ye Qingqing. I didn’t suspect them at first, but Cheng Bo’s behavior was so unusual! It made me suspect there was something going on between them!”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan’s eye twitched.
Cheng Bo had left such obvious evidence right under her nose with his cousin, and she hadn’t noticed.
Ye Qingqing was the kind of person whose clues were hard to catch—but Hu Shan had noticed something off immediately!
“I observed Jingjing carefully and noticed her hair resembles Cheng Bo’s, while her eyes and lips resemble Ye Qingqing’s.”
Gu Yihan looked at the gloomy Hu Shan, understanding that her friend’s heart was troubled.
“Sister Han, you’re clever. Help me think of a way—what should I do?”
Hu Shan’s eyes were slightly red, hoping Gu Yihan could point her in the right direction.
Because she really didn’t know what to do.
Gu Yihan said nothing, took the water, and stepped aside to let Hu Shan fill her cup.
Hu Shan filled her cup halfway, and on the way back, Gu Yihan spoke after some thought:
“Sister Shan, I can’t make decisions for you, nor can I tell you what to do.”
In this era, women were already the weaker sex. Even if there were problems in a family, very few people got divorced.
If she interfered in Hu Shan’s marriage,
and they didn’t divorce, then the couple could remain happy while she became a thorn in their side.
If they did divorce and Hu Shan married someone suitable, she might not deserve any credit.
If things went badly, she would be blamed for giving advice.
This was also why she, even knowing Cheng Bo had someone else, could only hint and not speak outright.
Hu Shan’s gaze gradually dimmed. Thinking that Cheng Bo might actually be with another woman, she felt an uncontrollable sense of grievance. Her nose tingled, and tears streamed down her face.
Seeing Hu Shan upset, Gu Yihan felt a pang of sympathy.
She sighed, stopped walking, and looked her in the eyes seriously: “Sister Shan, have you thought about your future life?”
Hu Shan looked up, tearful, at Gu Yihan. “Future life?”
“Your life with Cheng Bo.”
“If what you suspect is true, what will you do? Divorce him, or…”
“No, I can’t divorce him!”
Hu Shan interrupted anxiously, shaking her head like a rattle. “If I divorced, wouldn’t relatives and friends laugh at me?”
Gu Yihan froze. Hu Shan’s reason for not divorcing was fear of ridicule, not her feelings for Cheng Bo.
She simply could not understand that mindset.
Was living according to what others thought really so important?
Gu Yihan shook her head and said no more.
It seemed that Hu Shan had to experience enough lessons herself to truly understand what she wanted.
At noon, Gu Yihan and Hu Shan went to the main cafeteria to eat.
Just as they sat down, Cheng Bo walked over carrying a lunchbox and sat next to Hu Shan, his gaze fixed on her the entire time.
Hu Shan didn’t look up, focusing on her meal.
“Xiao Shan, I bought you a lipstick. The color is really beautiful!”
He pulled a lipstick from his pocket and placed it in front of Hu Shan, smiling.
“See if you like the color. If not, I’ll buy another one for you.”
Hu Shan glanced at it, said nothing, and softly murmured, “Mm.”
Seeing any response, Cheng Bo’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
When his gaze swept over Gu Yihan, who was eating with her head down, a cold glint flashed in his eyes.
Bitch, if it weren’t for her meddling,
Hu Shan wouldn’t be upset with him.
He was the hope of his entire family, striving to rise out of the countryside.
His parents had married off all three of his older sisters, and through money and connections, had finally gotten him a driver job at the textile factory.
He had worked so hard for all this.
Moreover, Hu Shan was the easiest woman he had ever deceived—good family, only child.
He hadn’t gotten what he wanted yet. How could he let Hu Shan go easily?
Thinking this, a murderous glint flashed in Cheng Bo’s eyes.
Anyone who dares to obstruct his climb upward will not be spared.
