Family Compound
Haohai was in the yard, chasing a half-grown black puppy around, when he heard the door open.
He looked up toward the doorway and saw Gu Yihan pushing her bicycle inside.
Shouting as he ran over, he clutched her leg and pouted.
In a childish voice, he said, “Mom, you’re back late!”
Gu Yihan parked her bicycle, bent down to lift him up, and kissed his cheek.
Smiling, she asked, “Missed Mommy?”
Lu Huailin came out of the kitchen carrying a large bowl and explained, “After Haohai got home, he didn’t see you and pouted. He was unhappy!”
Gu Yihan, hearing this, gently tapped Haohai’s small nose.
Grinning, she said, “It’s not that Mommy came home late today; it’s that your dad went to the kindergarten earlier than usual!”
The little black dog weaved between Gu Yihan’s legs, nearly tripping her.
Tilting her head, she looked at Lu Huailin in confusion: “Where did this dog come from?”
Lu Huailin paused for a moment before answering, “It was sent from the military dog base.”
Gu Yihan glanced at the little creature biting at her pants leg and smiled faintly.
“I haven’t seen Maomao for over a year. Last time I went to the military dog base, they said Maomao had been seconded to a border unit!”
“I wonder when it will come back…”
Sigh “Such an ungrateful dog. Ever since it started missions, it’s forgotten me, its owner!”
Lu Huailin didn’t respond, instead serving the rice and ribs onto the table.
Looking at the braised ribs on the plate, Gu Yihan praised him as he served the food: “Luckily, I married you. I didn’t lose out!”
“A man who can handle the household and cook well isn’t something you find every day!”
Lu Huailin adjusted his expression and deliberately scowled: “Oh? So if you didn’t marry me, who would you have married?”
Gu Yihan raised her eyes at him irritably and took a big bite of the rib.
Better not praise him too much, or his ego will reach the sky.
She didn’t say it aloud, but in her heart, she was secretly pleased.
In this era, a man who can take care of the child and cook is truly a rare gem.
Occasional praise to encourage him is enough.
“Mommy, I want some!” Haohai shouted, holding sand in his right hand and pointing at the ribs with his left.
“All right, Mommy will pick a nice piece for you!”
After speaking, Gu Yihan took a central piece of rib and placed it in Haohai’s bowl.
After Dinner, Gu Yihan half-lay on the bed, with Haohai lying on her stomach.
Listening to her tell the story of “Journey to the West: The Three Battles with the White Bone Demon,” his little head soon sank down in sleep.
Lu Huailin came in after washing up. Seeing Haohai asleep, he carefully carried him inside.
Gu Yihan glanced at her wrist. It was nine o’clock.
Softly, she asked, “Are you setting up a bed for the little black dog?”
Lu Huailin nodded.
“Wife, I have something to tell you.”
Gu Yihan looked up from her book toward his face.
Seeing him completely expressionless, she asked in surprise, “What is it? You look so serious!”
Lu Huailin paused for a moment: “Maomao… it died.”
Gu Yihan froze. The book in her hands dropped straight onto the bed.
She stared at Lu Huailin in disbelief, thinking he must be joking.
Trembling lips, she cautiously asked, “Are you joking with me?”
Lu Huailin looked at her, pain flashing in his eyes.
Shaking his head, he said, “During a capture mission, Maomao sacrificed itself to save an injured soldier.”
Gu Yihan’s mind went blank.
She thought of Maomao, always accompanying her to work through rain or shine, happily running around whenever they went out together.
She remembered its proud and brave stance whenever it had pounced on someone who bullied her.
Tears rolled uncontrollably down her cheeks.
When she had no one to protect her, Maomao had been like a soldier, always guarding her.
Seeing this, Lu Huailin hurried over and tightly embraced his wife.
His heart ached too. When he heard about Maomao’s sacrifice, he didn’t know how to tell her.
Afraid she would be heartbroken.
Gu Yihan clutched his arm tightly and buried her face in his chest, crying loudly.
Her cries woke the just-asleep Haohai.
Sleepy, he looked at his mother wailing, then glanced at his father, who had no time for him.
He got up, walked to Gu Yihan’s back, and gently patted her with his small hands, murmuring: “It’s okay, don’t cry, don’t cry.”
Seeing that no matter what he said, Gu Yihan didn’t look back at him, he felt utterly aggrieved.
His eyes brimming with tears, Lu Huailin gently patted Haohai’s cheek.
“Go back to sleep, Haohai. Once you sleep, Mommy will stop crying.”
Haohai didn’t understand how sleeping was related to his mother stopping crying.
But to make Mommy happy, he obediently lay down and closed his eyes.
Listening to his wife cry herself hoarse, Lu Huailin felt deeply distressed.
His large hands continuously stroked her back, soothing her emotions.
“Wife, the little black dog is Maomao’s descendant. From now on, it will stay with you.”
Gu Yihan didn’t say a word, only letting her tears flow, her throat now unable to make a sound.
Seeing this, Lu Huailin stayed silent, letting her vent her emotions freely.
Until Gu Yihan cried herself to sleep, Lu Huailin carefully laid her on the bed.
He found a clean, warm towel and placed it over her eyes.
The Next Day
Cough, cough.
Gu Yihan slowly opened her swollen eyes, her head splitting, and her throat felt like it had been cut with knives. She sat up slowly, looking around.
On the bed opposite her was a stranger woman with an IV drip.
She realized she was in a hospital.
At that moment, Lu Huailin came in carrying a patient’s meal. Seeing that she was awake, he hurried over with long strides.
“Wife, you’re finally awake!”
He set the meal on the bedside table.
Gu Yihan hoarsely asked, “Why am I in the hospital?”
Lu Huailin sat beside her, tightly holding her hand.
Seeing her eyes swollen like ripe cherries, he couldn’t help but feel his heart ache: “Wife, you had a fever.”
He stood up, opening the meal box while mumbling in a motherly way, “You must be hungry. Have some porridge first to settle your stomach. Later, I’ll go home and make you soup!”
He handed the meal box to her.
Gu Yihan took a few sips and then looked up at Lu Huailin: “I want to go home.”
He reached out and touched her forehead, worried: “Wife, be obedient. Let’s stay for observation one more night.”
Gu Yihan stubbornly shook her head: “Don’t worry, I’m fine.”
No matter how Lu Huailin tried to persuade her, he couldn’t change her mind. Reluctantly, he agreed to let her discharge herself and return home.
Back Home
Gu Yihan paused as she saw the little black dog wagging its tail to greet them.
“Huailin, take this dog back!”
“Maomao is irreplaceable in my heart!”
With that, she walked straight into the living room and closed the door, not looking back.
