The next day, after finishing her morning chores, Gu Yihan picked up her simple luggage and prepared to leave.

“Hanhan, why are you only taking so little luggage? Why not bring a quilt?” Grandma Gu asked in surprise, looking at her granddaughter.

Gu Yihan was startled by her grandmother’s sudden question and said, “Grandma, the school provides them. I don’t need to bring anything from home.”

“Grandma, it’s getting late. I’ll be going now.”

Grandma Gu put down the basket in her hands and said, “I’ll send you to catch the ox cart.”

Seeing this, Gu Yihan grabbed her grandmother and pulled her inside. “Grandma, don’t come. The more you go, the harder it will be to leave. I’ll send you 5 yuan every month for your living expenses, so you don’t have to work in the fields anymore.”

Grandma Gu smiled. “No need. You keep it for yourself. The work I do, cutting pig grass, isn’t tiring.”

“Grandma, I’m leaving now.”

Grandma Gu nodded and waved, not insisting on sending her granddaughter.

At the village entrance, the ox cart hadn’t left yet. “Grandpa, when are we leaving?”

The ox cart driver chuckled. “Han girl, going to the commune? Get on the cart. We’re leaving now.”

Once on the ox cart, Gu Yihan ignored the curious glances from others and slowly made her way to Hongqi Commune.

After getting off, she took out the fare and two milk candies she had prepared in advance and handed them to the ox cart driver. Without giving him a chance to speak, she ran off.

Holding the candies in his hand, the driver called after her, “Han girl, don’t run so fast!”

Gu Yihan soon arrived at the Public Security Bureau and went to the Household Registration Department. She found a staff member and said, “I’d like to process my household relocation paperwork.” She then handed over the certificate issued by the brigade and her school admission notice.

The staff member, a young man in his twenties, handled the paperwork efficiently.

After buying a bus ticket to Jinyang City, Gu Yihan rode for six hours to reach the city.

Entering the vocational school campus, she found the woman in charge of the girls’ dormitory. “Aunt, I’m Gu Yihan from Accounting Class 1. Could you tell me my dorm room number?”

The dormitory aunt checked the registration list. “Second floor, Room 201.”

Gu Yihan handed her a White Rabbit candy with a smile. “Thank you, Auntie.”

The dormitory aunt smiled at the candy. “Just call me Aunt Chen. If you have any problems, come find me anytime.”

“Okay, Aunt Chen. I’ll go upstairs and arrange my bed,” Gu Yihan said, climbing the stairs.

When she reached Room 201 and pushed the door, it didn’t open—someone was inside.

“Knock, knock, knock.”

She tapped rhythmically on the door. After waiting a moment, there was still no response.

Patiently, she knocked again. “Is anyone there? Anyone inside?”

This time, there was a response. “Why are you making so much noise? Are you trying to call ghosts?”

Opening the door, Gu Yihan saw a woman wearing stylish clothes and sporting wavy curls.

The woman glanced at Gu Yihan, noticing her plain gray outfit. Although there were no patches, the fabric had faded from washing.

Looking down on her, she sneered, “Where did this country bumpkin come from?”

Gu Yihan ignored her and walked into the dorm, choosing a lower bunk by the window. She spread the quilt she had already taken out from her space.

“Hey, I’m talking to you! Are you mute?” the stylish woman shouted, blocking her path.

Gu Yihan calmly looked at her. “I’m not called ‘hey.’ My name is Gu Yihan. Please don’t block my way, classmate.”

The girl in stylish clothes muttered, “Country bumpkin, acting so high and mighty.”

Gu Yihan didn’t have time to entertain this little girl’s attitude—she still needed to settle her household registration.

She found the accounting office and knocked. “Knock, knock, knock.”

“Come in,” a pleasant voice called.

Gu Yihan entered and saw a particularly beautiful woman inside, with delicate white skin and outstanding temperament, sitting at the desk.

“Hello, teacher. I’m Gu Yihan from Accounting Class 1. I’d like to ask what documents are needed to register my household here,” she said.

The female teacher replied gently, “Gu Yihan, give me your documents. I will issue a certificate for transferring into the collective household account.”

Gu Yihan immediately handed over the documents from her bag.

After issuing the certificate, the teacher handed it to Gu Yihan. “Take these documents to the Public Security Bureau and process the household relocation. Tell them it’s needed for school enrollment.”

“Thank you, teacher,” Gu Yihan said, taking the certificate.

After leaving the Public Security Bureau with her new collective household certificate, she looked up at the sky. Its deep blue color, unlike anything in the future, marked the beginning of her new life.

As she opened the dormitory door, she saw two unfamiliar girls fighting. The girl in blue was tugging at another in a floral dress, who in turn pinched the girl in blue’s ear.

Gu Yihan froze. Did she enter the wrong room? She stepped back and checked the number—201. No mistake.

“Hahaha, Gu Yihan, why are you just standing there?” a loud, arrogant voice called.

She recognized the voice and knew she hadn’t made a mistake.

The girl adjusted her curls and walked over. “I didn’t even introduce myself, and you’re already leaving. I’m Su Nian.”

Gu Yihan looked at the two fighting girls in the dorm in confusion.

Su Nian pursed her lips. “Dead enemies. This dorm will be lively from now on. The girl in blue is An Ruo, and the one in the floral dress is An Duo. Same surname, different families.”

A tiny voice, almost inaudible, piped up. If Gu Yihan hadn’t had sharp ears, she wouldn’t have heard it.

She turned to see a hesitant girl at the door. “Classmate… I… I’m Zhou Tingmei.”

“What? Tingmei? How many sisters did your mom give birth to?” Su Nian said cruelly.

Gu Yihan looked at Zhou Tingmei, her eyes watering. Zhou Tingmei said in grievance, “I… I only have a younger brother, no sisters.”

Su Nian was about to tease Zhou Tingmei further but was interrupted by An Ruo’s sharp voice. “You little brat! I got into this vocational school. You got in too. If you want to get close to Jing He, you’ll have to ask my permission first.”

An Duo wasn’t lenient either. “He’s just a classmate. You’re paranoid all the time. Are you crazy?”

Gu Yihan went straight downstairs to find Aunt Chen. “Aunt Chen, two of my dorm mates are fighting. We’re afraid to intervene!”

Hearing this, Aunt Chen put down her work and stormed upstairs to Room 201. “What’s going on here?”

With her strength, she separated the two girls and scolded them harshly. “You’re here to study, not to fight!”

The two girls, separated, were furious but dared not speak.

Aunt Chen looked at their expressions and angrily said, “Next time I see you fighting, I’ll go to your homeroom teacher and have a record put in your file.”

Su Nian, realizing Aunt Chen had been called by Gu Yihan, secretly gave her a thumbs-up.
