Two days before the school registration.
“Grandma, I’m going to the team leader uncle’s house later to get a household relocation certificate,” Gu Yihan said as she packed her things.
Grandma Gu said worriedly, “Then should Grandma go with you to your team leader uncle’s house? You’ll be gone for several months, and I’m not at ease.”
Gu Yihan smiled at her and said, “Grandma, I’m not a little kid anymore. I can go by myself. I’ll come back to see you during the holidays.”
Grandma Gu thought for a moment and said, “Alright.”
Gu Yihan walked along the small path in the village. She didn’t look around; if it weren’t for the rumors from two months ago, she would have had almost no presence in this village.
She had no sense of belonging here. On the way, she ran into Zhou Jiaxing, Liu Zhaodi’s son. With his chubby body, he was bullying a child smaller than him.
She ignored them and quickly walked to the team leader’s house. At the door, she called out, “Team leader uncle, are you home?”
Team leader Gu Baoqing came out of the house. “Ah, Yihan, what brings you here?”
Gu Yihan walked into the courtyard and, from her crossbody bag—actually from her space—took out her vocational school admission notice and said,
“Uncle, I need you to issue a household relocation certificate. I need to transfer my household registration to the school in the city.”
The team leader took the admission notice and examined it carefully. “Yihan, your family really kept this quiet. School is almost starting, right?”
Gu Yihan smiled and said, “Uncle, could I trouble you to keep it to yourself until I leave? Please don’t tell anyone yet.”
The team leader was curious. “This is the first one in our village! Shouldn’t the villagers celebrate a little? After all, we’re all relatives who haven’t left the village.”
Gu Yihan was not embarrassed. “Uncle, you know, there were some unpleasant rumors spreading in the village not long ago. I’m planning to go to school, and then those rumors will be proven false. If it’s revealed now, people will think I’m deliberately mocking them.”
Team leader Gu Baoqing wasn’t as easily swayed as Grandma Gu, but he didn’t press further either. “Alright, I promise you.”
He issued Gu Yihan the team-level household relocation certificate and handed it to her. She took it and placed it back in her bag, which then instantly returned to her space.
Gu Yihan said, “Team leader uncle, are you busy? I’ll be going now.”
Team leader Gu Baoqing didn’t reply, just nodded. After she left, he returned to the house.
His wife asked, “What did Yihan want from you?”
Gu Baoqing said, “This girl is amazing. She got into a vocational school in the city, majoring in accounting. Once she graduates, she’ll be a city person—an iron rice bowl.”
Looking at her wife’s eyes widening in surprise, he added, “She’s really that good? A few days ago, people were saying she got expelled.”
“That’s just idle gossip from the village women. Don’t believe it. Don’t say anything yet; I promised Yihan I’d wait until she starts school,” he instructed.
His wife glared at him playfully. “I know. Don’t you trust me?”
When Gu Yihan returned home, no one was there. She went to her room and closed the door.
She took out the household relocation certificate. Looking at it, an ache in her heart became uncontrollable, and she collapsed onto the bed, crying loudly.
Gu Yihan realized she had been suppressing her emotions for too long. In this unfamiliar place, where as long as they held your household registration, you could never leave…
Tomorrow, she would go to the Public Security Bureau’s Household Administration Department to transfer her household registration.
Once she graduated from the vocational school and got assigned a job, her registration would belong to her. No one could use it to control her again.
Grandma Gu returned from the private field and, hearing her granddaughter crying, said, “Yihan, why are you crying?”
Gu Yihan opened the door and looked at Grandma Gu at the doorway. “It’s nothing. I was just thinking about leaving tomorrow and feeling reluctant to part from you.”
Grandma Gu’s eyes were full of smiles. “It’s not a big deal. If you miss Grandma, just come back. This morning, you even comforted me.”
Gu Yihan smiled silently, then took Grandma Gu’s hand. “Grandma, let’s cook together.”
Grandma Gu said, “No need. You’re leaving tomorrow. Rest now. When Gu Meng comes back, she’ll cook. We won’t cook today.”
Soon, Gu Meng returned home and saw Gu Yihan and Grandma Gu laughing together in the courtyard—it was dazzlingly heartwarming.
Grandma Gu saw her and said, “Mengmeng, you cook lunch today, and steam an egg for Gu Bao.”
Even though she was angry, Gu Meng suppressed it and said, “Grandma, got it.”
When it was time to eat, the production team had finished work.
The whole family sat down at the table.
Grandma Gu cheerfully placed the steamed egg in front of Gu Bao. “Here, steamed egg for my little grandson. Eat up.”
The eldest daughter-in-law glanced at Gu Yihan and said, “Mother, Yihan can’t avoid earning work points. She can’t just eat for free every day.”
The second daughter-in-law, Chen Xiu, also said, “Exactly, Mother. She’s just a young lady with a servant’s fate.”
Gu Yihan saw that the women in the house all had their little calculations, while the men remained silent, clearly approving.
She didn’t give Grandma Gu a chance to speak and said, “Alright, tomorrow I’ll go to the school to get my diploma, then come back to earn work points.”
The eldest daughter-in-law Wang Ni and the stepmother Chen Xiu finally relented after hearing Gu Yihan’s promise.
Grandma Gu finally spoke, slightly exasperated: “Alright, let’s eat. Eating can’t stop your mouths anyway.”
Gu Meng looked at her with a triumphant gaze. Gu Yihan chose to ignore her and quietly ate her meal.
