Hu Shan rubbed her eyes and gave Gu Yihan a look full of grievance.
She lived in the military housing compound and didn’t have to worry about Grandma Gu’s harassment—but she did!
Thinking about how Grandma Gu had so brazenly ordered her to ask Gu Yihan for sponge cakes, Hu Shan felt irritated.
She tugged at her hair in frustration and complained, “It’s all your fault! You’ve spoiled Grandma Gu’s appetite! You used to buy her pastries and snacks every week, and now suddenly you stopped—how could she possibly accept that?”
If she couldn’t accept it, she’d have to go crazy, and if she couldn’t find Gu Yihan…
She’d end up looking for someone who could see Gu Yihan every day—meaning Hu Shan herself!
Gu Yihan looked at Hu Shan’s troubled expression and laughed. “Shan, are you worried that my grandma will bother you?”
Hu Shan raised her eyes and glared at Gu Yihan.
“Of course I am!” she said irritably.
“Your grandma and I are neighbors. If she can’t get what she wants from me, won’t she come to you every day instead?”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan thought Hu Shan had a point.
She lowered her head to think for a moment, then suddenly had an idea. She quickly pulled five yuan out of her crossbody bag and handed it to Hu Shan.
Hu Shan looked at the money in front of her curiously, then glanced at Gu Yihan with suspicion. “What’s this for?”
A faint smile flickered across Gu Yihan’s eyes.
She explained, “No pastries, but I can give her five yuan every month as her pension.”
Upon hearing this, Hu Shan didn’t overthink it and reached out to take the money, tucking it into her pocket.
After a moment, she realized what it meant.
Tentatively, she said, “Xiaohan… you mean that Grandma Gu wouldn’t dare offend me because of the monthly pension?”
Gu Yihan looked at her and smiled, nodding. “You just wait a couple more days before giving it to her. Things that come too easily aren’t worth treasuring.”
This was something she had only recently come to understand.
She wasn’t short of money and had never minded spending on Grandma Gu. It had made Grandma Gu think it was only natural for Gu Yihan to take care of her needs.
Hu Shan blinked her large, confused eyes at Gu Yihan. “I really can’t understand this special grandmother-granddaughter relationship of yours.”
In Hu Shan’s mind, once a granddaughter married, she might buy a gift for her parents or elders during festivals—that was enough.
But it seemed to Hu Shan that Gu Yihan was taking on the role of Grandma Gu’s son, providing her with retirement security!
“Why would she need a pension from you if she doesn’t live with you?” Hu Shan couldn’t help but ask.
Gu Yihan just smiled and nodded, saying nothing, linking arms with Hu Shan as they walked toward the office.
Hu Shan saw that Gu Yihan didn’t want to explain, so she didn’t press further. Some things were just too baffling to bother thinking about.
“Creak.”
Gu Yihan opened the office door and greeted Zhang Limin and Wang Guixiang.
“Oh, the little secret that couldn’t be revealed—is it finally out?” Zhang Limin teased with a smile.
Hu Shan pouted and muttered under her breath, “Gossip queen!”
Seeing Hu Shan remain silent, Zhang Limin’s curiosity was piqued. She asked again, “What were you two being all mysterious about?”
Hu Shan propped her cheek with her hand and pretended to be troubled. “Compared to Xiaohan, I really am unfilial!”
Hearing this, Zhang Limin and Wang Guixiang looked at each other in surprise.
They knew that Grandma Gu was aware Gu Yihan had Hu Shan help take care of her and even bought her treats.
Giving snacks was one thing—but providing a pension from a married granddaughter? That was a bit much!
Gu Yihan looked at the smug Hu Shan, speechless.
Was that really necessary? Saying it or not made little difference.
At Noon, Hu Shan happily linked arms with Gu Yihan as they headed to the cafeteria.
On the way, they ran into Cheng Bo and Secretary Chang, who were also heading to the cafeteria.
“Director Cheng, Secretary Chang, you’re going to the big cafeteria too?” Gu Yihan greeted them with a smile.
Cheng Bo glanced coldly at Hu Shan standing beside Gu Yihan and gave a light “hmph.”
Hu Shan glared at Cheng Bo, snorted, and gripped Gu Yihan’s arm tightly.
Feeling the pressure, Gu Yihan glanced at Hu Shan, whose gaze inadvertently swept over Secretary Chang.
At this moment, Secretary Chang noticed Hu Shan’s glaring, puffed cheeks, and a flicker in her eyes caused a faint smile at the corner of her lips.
“I see the small cafeteria’s chef is off today,” she explained with a smile.
“Xiaohan, let’s go.”
Hu Shan didn’t want to deal with Cheng Bo, so she pulled Gu Yihan’s arm and strode past them.
Cheng Bo’s eyes darkened as he watched her.
Shameless—if not for the gold and dowry savings she had, he would have already lost his temper.
…
While eating, Gu Yihan curiously looked at Hu Shan. “Did you argue with Cheng Bo?”
“He’s crazy!”
“He wants to limit my freedom to make friends. The more he tries to stop me from being friends with you, the closer I stick to you!” Hu Shan gritted her teeth.
Gu Yihan: “…”
So their argument was partly her fault.
But Hu Shan was close to her—what did Cheng Bo have to do with it?
She didn’t think she’d ever offended him.
Hu Shan picked up a slice of potato and chewed forcefully, venting her frustration.
She wasn’t stupid—ever since Cheng Bo learned that her parents planned to hand their family’s assets and connections to Cousin Jiang, she noticed he had changed.
But she refused to admit she’d married someone so calculating!
Gu Yihan silently finished her lunch, closed her lunchbox, and then asked, “Shan, do you know Secretary Chang?”
“Yes, but not very well. Why?” Hu Shan asked, surprised. Suddenly, she leaned over the table and whispered, “Do you like him?”
Gu Yihan’s mind froze. She didn’t want to say a word to Hu Shan.
Her mind was full of nonsense.
Hu Shan stared blankly, thinking she had truly fallen for someone else.
Her face paled, her heart raced, and she anxiously said, “No! You’re in a military marriage! If they find out, you’ll get criticized!”
“I don’t like him,” Gu Yihan said calmly.
After speaking, she stood, picked up her lunchbox without even looking at Hu Shan, and walked away.
She feared that looking at her any longer would make her too angry.
Hu Shan realized her mistake, grabbed her own lunchbox, and hurried to follow Gu Yihan, apologizing as she walked.
