On the other side…

Gu Yihan returned home. She first peeked into Grandma Gu’s bedroom but didn’t see anyone.

She walked into the living room, still seeing no sign of her, and after a moment’s thought, assumed she had gone to the daycare to pick up Haohai.

She casually placed her shoulder bag on the sofa.

In the kitchen, The clay pot on the coal stove bubbled “glug-glug,” releasing an enticing aroma.

Lu Huailin’s tall frame, wearing a small, homespun apron, looked especially comical.

Gu Yihan couldn’t help smiling and walked over to his side.

“Huailin, what are you making that smells so good?”

Lu Huailin glanced at his wife, smiling softly. “Clear chicken soup.”

Hearing this, Gu Yihan’s lips curved into a beautiful smile.

She had muttered the night before, wanting chicken soup but feeling too lazy to make it herself.

Now Lu Huailin had arranged it—there was something so comforting about being constantly thought of by someone else.

Thinking this, she stood on her tiptoes and planted a playful kiss on his cheek.

With a twinkle in her eye, she said, “Thank you, my dear husband.”

Lu Huailin paused mid-stir, glanced at his smiling wife, and sighed, silently hoping she could remain so cheerful even after he had sent Grandma Gu away.

Not long after…

He Shengli was in the yard, holding Haohai and calling toward the kitchen.

“Captain, sister-in-law, I’ve brought Haohai back!”

Hearing He Shengli, Gu Yihan smiled and stepped out of the kitchen, only to see that there was just one adult and one child in the yard.

A flicker of confusion passed across her eyes. “Haohai, why didn’t your grandma come back with you?”

Haohai ran to Gu Yihan, tugging at her finger.

He lifted his small head, blinking his big eyes, and said in a childish voice, “Why would my grandma come back with me?”

He Shengli, noticing Gu Yihan’s furrowed brows, felt a pang of guilt.

Worried she might ask him directly, he hurriedly excused himself: “Sister-in-law, Yan Xin is still waiting at the door, so I’ll go first!”

Without waiting for her reply, he vanished in a flash.

Gu Yihan shook her head with a smile.

Squatting down, she pinched Haohai’s little face and asked, smiling, “Haohai, your grandma didn’t come pick you up?”

Lu Huailin approached with one hand holding the freshly cooked dishes and the other carrying steamed buns.

He interrupted gently, “Wife, let’s eat first. We’ll talk about Grandma later.”

Gu Yihan slowly stood up, thoughtfully watching Lu Huailin walk away.

The three of them quietly finished their meal, and Gu Yihan took Haohai back to the bedroom.

She efficiently washed his face and little feet.

Patting his bottom, she said, “Sit down first, Mommy will get you your picture books.”

Haohai sat on the bed, clapping his hands and giggling.

Lu Huailin pushed open the bedroom door and saw his wife lying on her side, watching Haohai.

He strode over and sat on the bed.

After a moment’s pause, he said, “Wife, Grandma went to Qin Shou’s house.”

Gu Yihan froze for a moment, then casually said, “Oh.”

Where Grandma Gu wanted to go had nothing to do with her.

She had realized it—people who didn’t care about her, she wouldn’t care about either.

Lu Huailin noticed his wife’s cold attitude.

Panic surged in his chest—was she angry?

He quickly got onto the bed, turned her gently, and held her tightly in his arms.

Cautiously, he asked, “Wife, are you upset?”

Gu Yihan chuckled lightly, looking straight into Lu Huailin’s eyes.

Shaking her head, she said, “Grandma is an adult; it’s her freedom to go wherever she wants!”

Hearing this, Lu Huailin realized she had misunderstood.

She had thought Grandma Gu went to Qin Shou’s house of her own accord.

He leaned in, kissing her gently, and whispered into her ear, “Wife, I was the one who sent Grandma away. She wanted Gu Meng to come back, but I didn’t agree!”

Gu Yihan pushed Lu Huailin away slightly, laughing as she smoothed his furrowed brows.

“You’re not angry?”

Gu Yihan chuckled. “Why would I be? I’d only be angry if you listened to Grandma and let Gu Meng back, just to maintain relations!”

Haohai looked up at his parents, who were holding each other, frowning slightly.

He looked exactly like Lu Huailin.

He stood up, squeezed between Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin, and looked up at Lu Huailin with big, round eyes—it was clear he wanted a hug too.

Lu Huailin’s heart warmed, and he stretched out his long arms, hugging both mother and son together.

Thinking about Grandma Gu’s attitude these past few days, Gu Yihan couldn’t help laughing.

She said, “I finally understand why she threw a tantrum!”

Lu Huailin looked tenderly at his wife’s fair cheeks, knowing she must have been hurt.

“Wife, you have me and Haohai—those of us together are the closest!”

Gu Yihan looked down at Haohai in her arms and affectionately kissed his forehead.

She nodded. “From now on, I’ll give her a small living allowance every month. Let’s just consider it repayment for her raising him.”

The next day, Hu Shan anxiously paced outside the accounting office, waiting for Gu Yihan.

“Xiao Shan, I’m getting dizzy watching you walk!” Zhang Limin wailed, holding her head.

Wang Guixiang glanced at her sharply, annoyed: “If you didn’t look at her, you wouldn’t get dizzy, right? You can’t control your curiosity and blame others!”

Hu Shan didn’t even have the mood to respond to Zhang Limin, lowering her head and pacing back and forth.

From afar, Gu Yihan saw Hu Shan pacing at the door, suspiciously asking, “Sister Shan, what’s wrong with you?”

Hu Shan suddenly lifted her head, walked quickly over, and grabbed Gu Yihan’s arm, leading her to a more secluded spot.

As they walked, she asked, “Xiao Han, what’s going on with Grandma Gu? Why did she go back to the old courtyard again?”

Seeing Hu Shan gnash her teeth in anger, Gu Yihan couldn’t help laughing and explained, “She wants to return to the old courtyard, there’s nothing I can do about it!”

Hu Shan remembered how Grandma Gu had stopped her this morning.

She had repeatedly told her to inform Gu Yihan about buying snacks.

She jabbed Gu Yihan’s arm hard, frustrated, saying, “Do you know everyone in the old courtyard says you’re heartless? You didn’t care about blood ties and sent your own sister in! And they even said…”

Gu Yihan patted Hu Shan’s arm, interrupting her: “Sister Shan, it’s not worth getting angry over people who are irrelevant!”

Seeing that Gu Yihan had been ‘betrayed’ by Grandma Gu yet showed no emotion, Hu Shan suddenly admired her.

Even she, an outsider, was furious.

She exhaled deeply: “Grandma Gu said she wants to eat sponge cakes.”

Gu Yihan’s smile faded, and a trace of coldness flickered in her eyes.

“Don’t bother with her, Sister Shan.”
