Afternoon
Lu Huailin held Haohai in his arms and had just stepped into the yard when he shouted at the top of his lungs: “Wife, Guo Meng’s verdict is out!”
Gu Yihan, hearing this, didn’t even have time to wipe her hands and quickly rushed out of the kitchen. She looked at Lu Huailin: “Really?”
Lu Huailin smiled at his wife and said in a deep voice, “She got seven years.”
Gu Yihan was so happy she could barely contain her scream. She quickly covered her mouth and spun around with Lu Huailin and Haohai.
Haohai giggled at his mother’s actions and, in a babyish voice, said, “Mom, you’re acting so childish!”
Gu Yihan glared at him with mock annoyance: “Little brat, what do you know! Mom’s happy!”
“The villain who hurt your great-grandmother has finally gotten what he deserves.”
Just as Haohai was about to speak further, a loud clatter came from the living room, startling him.
Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin exchanged a glance and hurried into the living room.
There, they saw Grandma Gu leaning on the dining table, silently crying.
Lu Huailin put Haohai down and strode over, bending down to set the fallen chair upright.
Gu Yihan quickly went to her grandmother’s side, held her hand, and helped her sit on the sofa.
Seeing her so heartbroken, she thought it was the lingering psychological trauma caused by Gu Meng.
She quickly tried to console her gently: “Grandma, you heard it too, right? Gu Meng won’t ever hurt you again!”
“From now on, if you have anything to say, tell your granddaughter directly. You won’t have to worry about anyone bullying you or stopping you from coming home!”
Grandma Gu, hearing this, buried her face in her hands and cried even harder.
She hadn’t expected that her little granddaughter would report to the police. It was all her fault—if not for her, Gu Meng wouldn’t have been harmed.
“Xiaohan, it’s my fault. If I hadn’t insisted on coming to your house, I wouldn’t have provoked Gu Meng!”
Gu Yihan gently patted Grandma Gu’s back, trying to comfort her: “Grandma, it’s not your fault. It’s Gu Meng’s fault. You don’t need to blame yourself.”
With the medical conditions at hand, if it weren’t for her intervention, Grandma Gu’s injuries would have been almost impossible to recover from completely.
Grandma Gu cried for a while, then looked at her little granddaughter, opening her mouth as if to say something. She wanted to say that all children are like her own flesh and blood—just with differences in thickness of care.
Her partiality toward her little granddaughter was true; she hated Gu Meng with all her heart.
But Gu Meng was still her own granddaughter. Even if Gu Meng had hit her, she had never thought of sending her to prison. How could the children at home manage if she went to jail?
The more she thought, the more heartbroken she became, sobbing loudly.
Gu Yihan hurriedly wiped away her tears, softly saying: “Grandma, crying too much will hurt your eyes. If something’s bothering your heart or if you have anything to say, just tell me directly.”
But Grandma Gu didn’t speak. She held her granddaughter’s hand tightly and stared at her, saying nothing.
Lu Huailin kept his gaze on Grandma Gu, as if he could see into her heart and knew what she was thinking.
Gu Yihan was on the verge of collapse from her grandmother’s behavior.
She had no choice but to look at Lu Huailin for help, hoping he would say something to calm Grandma Gu.
Lu Huailin smirked coldly, picked up Haohai, and sat at the dining table without a word.
His wife might not have noticed, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t!
His lowered eyes narrowed slightly, a trace of displeasure flashing across them.
All she did was meddle too much and fuss, making him guess her thoughts all day.
Meanwhile, at the Military District Hospital, “Doctor, please listen carefully again. Could you have misheard?” Zhang Xia grabbed the doctor’s arm, agitated.
The obstetrician gave her a sharp look and pulled back his arm. He walked to the desk, staring her straight in the eye.
“Comrade Zhang, I’ve been working for fifteen or sixteen years, and I’ve never misheard once! The fetal heartbeat in your womb has already stopped.”
Hearing this, Zhang Xia’s tears poured down uncontrollably. She shook her head: “I don’t believe it. How could there be no heartbeat? Last time you said, if I rested properly, the baby could reach full term!”
The doctor, maintaining patience, asked: “Comrade Zhang, did you follow my instructions to rest at home? Only you know the answer!”
“I…”
The doctor raised his hand to stop her, saying: “Go home, discuss with your family, and come back to the hospital as soon as possible for surgery.”
Zhang Xia sprang up, crying loudly: “I won’t have surgery! The baby in my womb is still alive!”
Seeing her so heartbroken, the obstetrician sighed, unable to scold her: “Comrade Zhang, since it was discovered early, after surgery and proper recovery, you’ll be able to conceive again soon.”
Zhang Xia seemed not to hear him. She wiped her tears and walked out, completely distraught.
She hated Su Nian. If it weren’t for her revealing the money-borrowing incident to Deputy Battalion Commander Wang, she wouldn’t have gotten into the dispute that led to the push and shove at home.
Under the big tree in the housing compound, Zhao Ju held her daughter, chatting with other military wives: “Have you heard? Lan Cao went to see Deputy Battalion Commander Wang again!”
Another military wife replied: “No need to hear from others—I saw it myself. Less than a month passes, she comes again!”
The wife of the company commander held Zhao Ju’s other daughter and added: “Lan Cao really has no shame. She’s divorced and still comes looking for a man in the compound.”
Zhao Ju smirked knowingly, glancing at Zhang Xia, who was eavesdropping nearby. She deliberately raised her voice and sneered: “Must be for some benefit! Who’s stupid enough to keep chasing a married man without gain?”
Zhao Ju had heard the rumors in the compound before but hadn’t cared much.
Who knew that when she went to the supply store to buy canned yellow peaches, Lan Cao brazenly insisted she give them up, shameless to the extreme?
Zhang Xia, eavesdropping, bit her lips tightly, her clenched fists leaving marks in her palms.
She finally understood why the family didn’t have enough money—the little vixen outside had taken it all!
Thinking about the fact that the baby in her womb had already died, tears streamed down her face.
Ten minutes later:
“Gone?” the company commander’s wife asked Zhao Ju softly.
“Yes,” Zhao Ju said, holding her eldest daughter and standing up, signaling her child to follow her back.
The commander’s wife sighed and said: “Do you think Zhang Xia will take revenge on Lan Cao?”
Zhao Ju smiled faintly and shook her head: “Who knows?”
The commander’s wife: “…”
Zhao Ju had merely taken a gamble—if Zhang Xia could deal with Lan Cao, it would satisfy her. If not, no loss at all.
