Weekend
After breakfast, Gu Yihan turned to her grandmother sitting on the sofa and said, “Grandma, I’m going to Hu Shan’s place today.”
Hearing this, her grandmother turned to look at her little granddaughter and, with a hoarse voice, said, “Thank her for me!”
Hearing her grandmother’s raspy voice, Gu Yihan frowned, poured a glass of honey water, and handed it to her. “Grandma, your throat is dry!”
Her grandmother looked up at her granddaughter and smiled faintly, taking the cup without saying a word.
Seeing this, Gu Yihan exhaled deeply.
Her grandmother had mostly recovered over the past few days.
It was just that she wasn’t sure if the psychological shadow caused by Gu Meng had been too heavy.
It seemed she wasn’t as cheerful as before and kept everything to herself, saying nothing.
…
Hu Shan was strolling near the courtyard gate, holding her child with Cheng Weihong.
Hearing the “ding-ling-ling” of a bicycle bell, she looked up and saw Gu Yihan.
Her eyes lit up, and she happily shouted, “Xiao Han! What are you doing here?”
Gu Yihan smiled at her words, stopped her bicycle, and teased, “Sister Shan, are you not happy to see me?”
Hu Shan quickly pressed Jingjing into Cheng Weihong’s arms and hurried over to Gu Yihan’s side.
Linking her arm with hers, she said, “How could I not be happy?”
Suddenly recalling something, she asked, “By the way, how’s your grandmother’s health?”
Gu Yihan pushed her bicycle, walking side by side with Hu Shan into the courtyard, and said, “Sister Shan, my grandma is much better now. This time, it really was thanks to you.”
Hu Shan scratched her head, looking at Gu Yihan with embarrassment. “You say that, but if it weren’t for your carefulness, your grandma wouldn’t have recovered enough to come to your house so quickly either!”
Gu Yihan chuckled lightly.
“Oh! Comrade Gu is here. How’s your grandma doing?” A neighbor from the courtyard spotted Gu Yihan and immediately came forward to ask.
Gu Yihan remembered that the neighbor had lent her a handcart the other day.
She quickly took six White Rabbit candies from her pocket and handed them over.
Smiling, she said, “Auntie, my grandma is much better now. Thank you for your concern.”
Seeing the White Rabbit candies in her palm, the neighbor’s smile became even warmer.
Hu Shan, worried the neighbor would chatter endlessly, hurriedly interrupted, “Auntie, Xiao Han and I will head home first.”
The neighbor smiled and nodded.
Hu Shan invited Gu Yihan to sit on a bench, then turned to pour a cup of brown sugar water for her and set it in front of her.
Gu Yihan took a pound of meat and half a pound of brown sugar from her bag and placed them on the table.
Smiling, she said, “Sister Shan, it’s nothing special. Don’t despise it!”
Hu Shan looked at the brown sugar and meat on the table and laughed.
She knew Gu Yihan said that to avoid her refusing the gifts.
She didn’t fuss and happily said, “Xiao Han, you’re far too polite. Why did you even bring these?”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan stood and linked her arm with Hu Shan. The two sat together on the bench.
She spoke candidly, “Sister Shan, if it weren’t for you secretly taking care of my grandma, she might not have held on this long!”
“Besides, you saved my grandma’s life this time. I can’t just say thank you with words and do nothing in action.”
Hu Shan paused for a moment, then turned to Gu Yihan and couldn’t help laughing, “Xiao Han, you’re exaggerating too much!”
Gu Yihan smiled and shook her head, saying nothing.
“Sister-in-law, Jingjing’s hungry. Can you hold her for a bit? I’ll go make her some food!”
Cheng Weihong, standing at the doorway, interrupted their conversation.
Hu Shan said to Gu Yihan, “Xiao Han, you haven’t seen my daughter yet. I’ll bring her over so you can take a look!”
With that, she stood, walked over to Cheng Weihong, took the child, and kissed her cheek.
She came back to Gu Yihan and sat down beside her on the bench, showing off, “Xiao Han, isn’t my daughter pretty?”
Gu Yihan looked at the child in Hu Shan’s arms. Her skin was fair, her face round, with double eyelids and big eyes.
When her gaze landed on her hair, she froze for a moment. Just like Cheng Bo, it was naturally curly!
“What do you think?”
Hearing Hu Shan’s question, Gu Yihan teased, “Sister Shan, your daughter’s hair is naturally curly too. Looks like she takes after Director Cheng!”
“Hehe, I also think Jingjing’s curls are somehow destined with our family,” Hu Shan laughed happily.
She didn’t overthink it, assuming it was just a coincidence. After all, many people have naturally curly hair.
Excitedly, she added, “Xiao Han, I heard that sometimes adopted children start looking more like their adoptive parents as they grow. Isn’t that amazing? It’s like they’re truly part of the family!”
Gu Yihan looked at the excited Hu Shan, opening her mouth, unsure how to respond.
She trusted Cheng Bo too much to imagine he would betray their family.
And she couldn’t directly tell Hu Shan that this child might be Cheng Bo’s, because there was no evidence.
At this time, there was no paternity test or anything to prove a blood relationship.
Ten minutes later, Cheng Weihong walked into the living room, carrying freshly made rice porridge, and placed it on the dining table.
She praised Hu Shan, “Sister-in-law, Jingjing likes you more and more! She cries less at home now!”
“Really?”
Cheng Weihong smiled, taking Jingjing from her, and said, “Of course it’s true. Do you think I’d lie?”
Gu Yihan noticed Hu Shan visibly brightening up.
“By the way, Sister Shan, where’s Director Cheng? Why isn’t he home?”
Cheng Weihong paused mid-spoon when Gu Yihan asked.
Hu Shan puffed up her cheeks, fuming, “He went back to his hometown! I don’t know what attracts him there, but he goes back every weekend!”
Gu Yihan, feigning surprise, exaggerated, “Every weekend? Someone unfamiliar might think Director Cheng has another family back home!”
Clatter!
Gu Yihan and Hu Shan looked down at the shattered ceramic spoon on the floor.
Cheng Weihong, holding Jingjing, panicked and stood up. “Sister-in-law… I… I didn’t hold it properly just now.”
Hu Shan smiled and comforted him, “It’s fine, it’s just broken. As long as no one got hurt, it’s okay.”
Gu Yihan noticed a flicker of conscience in his eyes.
At the very least, she knew she felt guilty—unlike Cheng Bo, who was hardened and unrepentant.
…
Residential Courtyard, Gu Yihan rode her bicycle, lost in thought. She wanted to help Hu Shan and didn’t want her to be deceived by Cheng Bo any longer.
Su Nian and Zhou Ni were playing at the courtyard gate and saw Gu Yihan ride straight past their own gate.
They immediately called out, “Xiao Han…”
The screech of Gu Yihan’s bicycle brakes almost deafened her!
Su Nian quickly picked up her daughter and hurried to Gu Yihan, worried, “Xiao Han, are you okay?”
Gu Yihan raised a hand to her ear, shook her head, and said, “Sister Su, I’m fine!”
With that, she pushed her bicycle and headed home.
