In the Afternoon, Near the end of the workday, Gu Yihan suddenly slapped her forehead.
When she had bought a birthday gift for Haohao, she had also bought two boxes of pastries and snow cream for Grandma Gu.
She almost forgot about it.
Quickly, she opened her drawer, took out the pastries and snow cream from her bag, and stood up to walk over to Hu Shan.
With a cheerful smile, she said, “Sister Shan, thank you for all your hard work!”
Hu Shan looked up at Gu Yihan and smiled faintly.
She reached out to take the pastries and snow cream, teasing, “You bought peach biscuits and glutinous rice sticks for your grandma again?”
Gu Yihan’s eyes curved with a smile as she nodded. “Sister Shan, just like before—you can invite her to your place to eat.”
It wasn’t that she was stingy and didn’t want Grandma Gu to take them home. She was genuinely worried that if Grandma took them back, she wouldn’t be able to keep them and might not get to eat them herself.
After all, in an ordinary household, snacks like pastries were considered a luxury. They cost money and also required ration tickets.
As Hu Shan placed the items into her crossbody bag, she said, “Don’t worry. Just like before, Gu Meng won’t find out.”
Gu Yihan was the most filial granddaughter Hu Shan had ever seen. Ever since Grandma Gu moved to the large communal yard, she not only checked in every few days to ask about her condition, but also often bought pastries to keep at her own home, fearing that Grandma Gu might be treated poorly or go hungry at Gu Meng’s house.
Thinking of Grandma Gu’s endless reminders and cautions, Hu Shan sighed, “Xiao Han, you’re being far too careful. She is Gu Meng’s own grandmother.”
Gu Yihan smiled faintly and didn’t argue. Instead, she asked, “Sister Shan, compared to when she first arrived, has my grandma changed?”
Hu Shan thought for a moment and realized she had indeed changed quite a bit—darker, thinner.
She looked at Gu Yihan, gave an awkward smile, and didn’t say anything further.
Seeing that Hu Shan was silent, Gu Yihan sighed and returned to her desk to sit down.
She knew Gu Meng was selfish and stingy.
Though not so extreme as to let Grandma Gu go hungry three meals a day for three days straight, it was enough that she could easily make her not get enough to eat at every meal.
Wang Guixiang watched Gu Yihan’s actions and smiled. “Xiao Han, you’re really good to your grandma.
Even when she’s not at your house to help watch the child, you still buy food for her.”
Gu Yihan froze for a moment, then shifted her gaze to Wang Guixiang.
Puzzled, she asked, “Just because she doesn’t help watch the child, does that mean you can’t be filial?”
Even if someone wasn’t inclined to be filial in this era, they wouldn’t say such a thing out loud. Was Wang Guixiang stupid?
Daring to say something like that so openly!
“No, I didn’t mean it like that,” Wang Guixiang hurriedly waved her hands and shook her head.
Gu Yihan smirked inwardly. She was clearly trying to set her up—if she agreed, it would prove she wasn’t filial. Very sneaky.
Zhang Limin lowered her head over her ledger, lips twitching slightly. Wang Guixiang’s forgetful mouth would get her into trouble sooner or later.
…
After work, Gu Yihan rode her bicycle back to the residential yard and saw Lan Cao walking alone.
She looked straight ahead, pretending not to see her, and rode past.
Lan Cao froze for a moment when she saw Gu Yihan on her bike, then suddenly pushed herself forward.
Calling out, “Xiao Han!”
She quickly caught up and grabbed the back of the bicycle seat, trying to pull it backward.
Gu Yihan noticed the bike wasn’t moving. She kicked hard twice, but it still didn’t budge.
Annoyed, she got off and coldly glared at Lan Cao. “Let go.”
Lan Cao shook her head like a rattle.
Frantically, she said, “Xiao Han, can you tell Deputy Battalion Commander Wang that I’m waiting for him at the residential yard entrance?”
Yesterday, she had waited for hours at the entrance, but Deputy Battalion Commander Wang never showed, and she didn’t know if he had managed to gather the money.
Gu Yihan snorted coldly. Meddling in others’ affairs would bring divine punishment.
She sneered, “Why should I care?”
Lan Cao hesitated, then looked at Gu Yihan. “But you already know about my relationship with Deputy Battalion Commander Wang.”
Gu Yihan was furious. Just because she knew about their relationship, she was supposed to help? What kind of robber logic was this!
She raised her eyes, gave her a glance, and nodded. “Fine, now let go.”
Seeing Gu Yihan agree, Lan Cao happily released her grip.
Gu Yihan took advantage of Lan Cao’s lapse in guard and gave her a sharp shove.
Before Lan Cao could react, Gu Yihan hopped on her bike and sped away.
Lan Cao stumbled, regained her balance, and saw Gu Yihan’s retreating back, realizing she had been tricked.
Fuming, she ground her teeth. “Once I remarry Deputy Battalion Commander Wang, I’ll throw cow dung in your yard every day!!!”
Meanwhile, in the large communal yard, after Hu Shan got home, she saw Grandma Gu washing urine-soaked clothes at the communal faucet, her eyes filled with a tinge of sympathy.
She quickly walked over, leaning close to her ear and whispered, “Grandma Gu, Xiao Han bought you pastries again. When you’re done, come to my house.”
Grandma Gu’s nose twitched, and tears nearly fell. With a heavy sniff, she softly said, “Mm.”
Knowing her granddaughter constantly worried about her, she felt both guilty and sad.
It was her fault for coming to care for Gu Meng when Haohao needed her the most.
Hu Shan glanced at Grandma Gu silently washing the clothes, sighed, shook her head, and returned to her own home.
After finishing the laundry, Grandma Gu didn’t have time to rest. While the child was still asleep, she had to quickly prepare dinner.
Halfway through cooking, a loud cry pierced the air: “Waaah…”
The sound carried to the kitchen, even before Grandma Gu could finish tidying up.
At that moment, Qin Shou lazily entered the house. Hearing his son’s cries, his expression immediately turned cold.
He opened the bedroom door and saw his son climbing to the edge of the bed.
Panicked, he rushed and caught him just as he was about to fall.
Holding his son in his arms, he gently patted his head and whispered, “Don’t be scared, don’t be scared.”
His heart was still racing—his son had almost fallen from the bed.
Overflowing with anger and nowhere to vent, he quickly strode out of the bedroom and shouted at Grandma Gu in the kitchen, “You old hag, are your ears blocked? Didn’t you hear my son crying?!”
Grandma Gu’s face turned iron-like with anger at being called an old hag. She slammed her spatula onto the ground.
Wiping her hands on her apron, she walked to the living room, glared at Qin Shou, and said coldly, “I’m cooking!”
“Cooking? Are you going to feed the child with northwest wind?”
Seeing that Grandma Gu didn’t even acknowledge her mistake, Qin Shou scolded, “Cooking doesn’t mean you can just leave the child on the bed! Do you realize that if I hadn’t come back in time, my son would have fallen?!”
“Why all the shouting?”
Gu Meng hadn’t even returned home yet, but she could already hear Qin Shou yelling, sighing irritably.
