Grandma Gu saw Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin returning, and craned her neck to look behind them, but didn’t see Haohai.
She immediately stood up, anxious: “Where’s Haohai?”
“Haohai is at the daycare,” Gu Yihan replied lightly as she walked.
After closing the courtyard gate, Lu Huailin walked up to his wife.
Smiling, he explained to Grandma Gu: “Grandma, my wife is starting work soon. Today we just let Haohai get used to the daycare environment a little early.”
Gu Yihan stood beside Grandma Gu, glanced at the package beside the stool, pressed her lips together, a trace of disappointment flashing in her eyes.
Hearing this, Grandma Gu turned her head to look at her silent granddaughter. She wanted to ask what would happen if Haohai didn’t adapt to the daycare.
Then she realized that even if Haohai didn’t adapt, she wouldn’t have time to take care of him.
Bitterness spread in her heart.
Grandma Gu turned, holding her granddaughter’s hand tightly with one hand, and touched her soft hair with the other.
The older generation says: children with soft hair have soft hearts.
It’s true—her little granddaughter was indeed a kind, gentle child.
She thought that if anything happened to Gu Yihan because of her, she would die without peace in her heart.
Grandma Gu’s lips trembled slightly, her eyes reddened. She spoke softly, worried, to her granddaughter: “Xiaohan, after I leave, take good care of yourself. Talk more with Xiao Lu about life’s matters. Don’t make decisions on your own. You two should live well together.”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan could only nod gently.
She feared that if she spoke, her nose would sting and tears would fall uncontrollably.
Seeing her granddaughter nod, Grandma Gu thought she had understood, then turned to Lu Huailin and instructed: “Xiao Lu, I’m entrusting Xiaohan to you. You mustn’t bully her.”
Lu Huailin smiled, glanced at his silent wife, and said with a twinkle in his eye: “Grandma, don’t worry. Xiaohan is my wife—I cherish her, how could I ever bully her?”
Grandma Gu nodded, bent down, picked up the package beside the stool, and muttered to herself: “Now I can go to Gu Meng’s house at ease.”
After saying this, she saw tears welling up in her granddaughter’s eyes.
She could only suppress her own sadness: “If Haohai misses me, Xiaohan, you take him to Gu Meng’s house to see Grandma.”
Without waiting for a response, she grabbed the package and intended to leave immediately. She didn’t plan to let her granddaughter see her off.
Gu Yihan’s quick reflexes made her grab Grandma Gu’s arm, whispering: “Grandma, let Huailin take you there.”
She didn’t feel comfortable letting her grandmother walk to Gu Meng’s house alone.
Hearing this, Grandma Gu looked at Huailin standing beside her granddaughter.
She quickly shook her head: “No need. He still has to go to the unit. I can’t take up his time.”
Lu Huailin glanced at his wife and nodded to her.
Smiling, he walked to Grandma Gu and said: “Granny, don’t worry. I’m off today, I have plenty of time to take you.”
Then he reached out to take the package.
Seeing this, Grandma Gu quickly moved the package behind her.
She looked up at Lu Huailin, whispering: “Xiaohan will definitely feel uneasy at home, you should stay with her…”
“Grandma, if you don’t want Huailin to take you, your granddaughter will ride the bike to send you,” Gu Yihan interrupted coldly.
Before Grandma Gu could react, she grabbed her arm, walked to the bicycle, and smoothly placed the package in the front basket.
The motion was fluid and seamless.
By the time Grandma Gu realized it, her granddaughter had already started turning the bicycle around.
She immediately reached out, holding her arm: “Let Xiao Lu take me.”
She didn’t want her granddaughter to encounter Gu Meng, to avoid any conflict over her presence.
Hearing Grandma Gu, Lu Huailin quickly walked to his wife, took the bicycle, and said with a smile: “Wife, don’t worry. I promise to take Grandma there safely.”
Gu Yihan nodded. She didn’t want to see Gu Meng’s smug face.
She could already imagine how delighted the other party would be upon seeing Grandma Gu.
At the courtyard gate, Gu Yihan watched Grandma Gu’s retreating figure. She couldn’t hold back her tears—they fell freely.
“Creak.”
Su Nian walked out holding Zhou Ni. Seeing Gu Yihan’s slightly red eyes, she was momentarily stunned.
Pretending not to notice, she smiled: “Xiaohan, I remember you have milk powder at home. Can I exchange a can?”
Hearing Su Nian, Gu Yihan adjusted her emotions and forced a small smile: “Sure.”
Seeing Gu Yihan agree, Su Nian smiled and entered the courtyard with her. Just as they sat down, Zhou Ni in her arms suddenly started crying.
Gu Yihan took a can of milk powder and went to Su Nian, seeing Zhou Ni crying with her mouth wide open.
She frowned: “Sister Su, is Ni feeling unwell?”
Su Nian patted her daughter’s back and replied awkwardly: “She’s hungry.”
“Hungry?”
Gu Yihan paused for a moment, then looked at Su Nian in disbelief: “You didn’t feed her?”
“There was no milk powder at home yesterday. This morning I asked Zhang Xia to watch her for a while and went to the supply store to buy milk powder, who could’ve known there was none in stock.”
Gu Yihan was speechless.
Milk powder was scarce. Even with a ration, it was hard to buy. How could the supply store have stock?
She turned and went to the bedroom, found Haohai’s unused bottle, unscrewed it, put in two scoops of milk powder, added water, and shook it while walking to the living room.
“Here, this bottle was sent by Haohai’s grandpa. He’s never used it.”
Handing the prepared bottle to Su Nian, she explained as she did.
Su Nian smiled slightly, took the bottle, and before she could even shake it to check the temperature,
Zhou Ni, who had been crying nonstop, immediately stopped when she saw the bottle.
Her little chubby hands tightly grabbed the bottle, eagerly latched onto the nipple.
Gulp, gulp.
Zhou Ni drank rapidly, hardly taking a breath.
Su Nian looked at her daughter with heartache.
“Xiaohan, where did you buy your milk powder?”
Gu Yihan looked at Su Nian, seeing her intense gaze.
She sighed: “Sister Su, our milk powder was sent by Haohai’s grandpa from Beijing. We didn’t buy it in Kun City.”
Haohai had started eating solids early, so their milk powder wasn’t consumed quickly.
Hearing this, Su Nian’s face fell. She murmured: “What if we can’t get milk powder?”
Gu Yihan glanced at Zhou Ni, who had already finished the milk and still looked unsatisfied.
“Sister Su, an 11-month-old can eat solid food now.”
