The next day.
Gu Yihan woke up and, upon opening her eyes, saw Lu Huailin tiptoeing out while holding Haohao. She couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Hearing his wife’s laughter, Lu Huailin knew she was awake. He turned around with Haohao in his arms, a smile on his face: “Wife, you’re up pretty early today!”
Gu Yihan glared at him and teasingly said, “When have I ever gotten up late?”
“Wife, it’s six in the morning now, not seven,” Lu Huailin teased with a grin.
Usually, she would get up at seven on workdays, and on weekends, even if she woke before ten, she wouldn’t get out of bed.
“Let’s go.” Haohao couldn’t wait any longer. He reached out his chubby little hand and lightly patted Lu Huailin’s cheek as he called out.
“Alright, let’s go.” Lu Huailin looked at clever little Haohao with a smile.
Grandma Gu, standing in the center of the living room, was a bit surprised to hear her granddaughter’s voice. She thought perhaps Gu Yihan had insomnia like her the night before.
“Xiaohan’s awake?”
Seeing the worry on Grandma Gu’s face, Lu Huailin smiled and said, “She’s awake.”
He carried Haohao over to her and, noticing the shadows under her eyes, asked worriedly, “Grandma, didn’t sleep well last night?”
Grandma Gu patted Haohao’s tiny hand, full of reluctance, looked up at Lu Huailin, and nodded:
“The cicadas kept me awake all night.”
“Oh, by the way, did Xiaohan tell you I’m going to Gu Meng’s place?”
“She did,” Lu Huailin replied, holding Haohao in one arm and gently guiding Grandma Gu by the other arm toward the sofa.
After they sat down, Lu Huailin smiled and said, “Grandma, you’re just going to help her with the baby. You’re not gone forever.”
Lu Huailin had always thought that since Grandma Gu was their granddaughter, she could balance both sides without favoritism. There was nothing wrong with that.
Grandma Gu, recalling Gu Meng’s nature, opened her mouth to say that Gu Meng wouldn’t so easily let her free labor go.
At that moment, Gu Yihan came out of the bedroom, dressed. She smiled at Grandma Gu:
“Grandma, you can come back to the family compound anytime. Your granddaughter’s home will always have a room for you.”
She had made up her mind—if Grandma Gu wanted to go, let her. Gu Meng’s temperament was well-known to her. She couldn’t take care of Grandma Gu long-term anyway.
“Haohao, what are you planning to do?” Grandma Gu looked at Gu Yihan worriedly.
Gu Yihan smiled faintly at her: “Grandma, don’t worry about Haohao.”
When they decided to go to Gu Meng’s, had they thought about what to do with Haohao?
Hearing this, Grandma Gu paled a little, realizing that although her granddaughter didn’t say it, she still blamed herself.
Seeing this, Lu Huailin laughed and explained: “Grandma, Xiaohan and I have agreed. Haohao will go to the nursery. Drop him off at six-thirty in the morning, pick him up before seven in the evening. The nursery even takes care of breakfast and lunch.”
Grandma Gu, seeing that they had made all the arrangements, nodded with a smile. She then muttered softly to herself: “Now I can go to Gu Meng’s without worry.”
After breakfast, Gu Yihan said goodbye to Grandma Gu and went with Lu Huailin to register Haohao at the military nursery.
On the way, Gu Yihan held tightly to Lu Huailin’s sleeve, asking repeatedly: “Haohao is so little. Will he be bullied at the nursery? No, he’ll be with children his own age.”
“What if the teacher bullies him? He’s so little; he only knows a few simple words and can’t complain if he’s wronged.”
Lu Huailin laughed: “The nursery teachers all undergo background checks before being hired.”
“Then…”
Seeing the worry on his wife’s face, he interrupted, changing the subject: “Wife, from now on, let’s have breakfast at the cafeteria.”
“Okay.” Gu Yihan nodded absentmindedly.
She knew Lu Huailin suggested eating at the cafeteria so she could sleep a bit longer in the morning.
Ten minutes later.
Military Nursery
Zheng Hongxia looked at Lu Huailin and Gu Yihan in surprise, then smiled: “Commander Lu, what brings you here?”
“Teacher Zheng, my son Haohao is now one year old. We’re planning to enroll him in kindergarten for some training.” Lu Huailin said solemnly, keeping his expression neutral as he looked at Zheng Hongxia.
Zheng Hongxia smiled, glancing at Haohao quietly nestled in Lu Huailin’s arms: “That’s fine. Our nursery charges five yuan per month, and we guarantee the children eat healthily.”
“Teacher Zheng, how many children per teacher?” Gu Yihan asked.
She wasn’t worried about the food—since the cooks belonged to the military, they wouldn’t slack off. Her concern was the children’s safety: were there enough teachers to properly care for each child?
Zheng Hongxia smiled slightly at Gu Yihan: “For every ten children, there’s one caretaker and a cook. The medical team also conducts daily inspections.”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan’s tension eased. She took out five yuan and handed it to Zheng Hongxia with a smile: “We’ll pay the first month’s tuition.”
Zheng Hongxia took it, counted it openly, put it in the drawer, and stood up with a smile: “Will Haohao stay today to get used to the environment?”
Lu Huailin looked at Haohao and then turned to discuss with his wife: “Wife, should we let Haohao stay today to adapt?”
Gu Yihan saw Haohao blinking his big eyes at her with a confused look. Hesitant, she whispered: “Isn’t it a bit too early?”
“Wife, why don’t you quit your job at the textile factory and stay home to take care of Haohao?” Lu Huailin suggested firmly, knowing his wife wouldn’t quit for the child.
“Alright, let Haohao stay,” Gu Yihan gritted her teeth and agreed.
Zheng Hongxia, seeing that the couple had agreed, led them into the class with children Haohao’s age. She called out to the teacher reading picture books to the children: “Yan Xin.”
Hearing Zheng Hongxia, Yan Xin looked down and greeted the children in the classroom before coming out with a smile: “Sister Zheng.”
“This is Commander Lu. Haohao will be in your class.” Zheng Hongxia smiled as she instructed.
Hearing it was Commander Lu, Yan Xin immediately looked at Gu Yihan beside him and walked over, linking her arm with hers warmly: “Sister-in-law, leave Haohao to me.”
Gu Yihan was stunned by Yan Xin’s enthusiasm and instinctively pulled back: “Thank you, Comrade Yan.”
Leaving the nursery and heading back, Gu Yihan couldn’t help but ask: “Does Yan Xin know me?”
“No, she must have heard about you from Xiao He,” Lu Huailin replied.
“Xiao He Shengli?” Gu Yihan tilted her head, surprised.
Lu Huailin nodded slightly, smiling: “Comrade Yan Su is Xiao He’s partner. Their parents have already met.”
“So, the things you worried about, like Haohao being bullied, won’t happen.”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan gave Lu Huailin a side-eye and said coldly: “So you were just looking to see me worried?”
Seeing his wife’s tone, Lu Huailin immediately shook his head, nearly swearing to heaven as he explained: “Wife, I only just found out too.”
Gu Yihan snorted, turned her head, and jogged past Lu Huailin back to the courtyard.
As she pushed open the gate, she saw Grandma Gu already sitting in the courtyard with her bag packed, waiting for them.
