By ten o’clock at night, Lu Huailin finally returned to the small courtyard, wearing a grimy combat uniform. Thinking that everyone at home must already be asleep, he didn’t knock. Instead, he climbed over the wall and jumped inside.
Grandma Gu was a light sleeper. Hearing movement in the yard, she immediately turned on the light. After getting dressed, she came out of the bedroom and relaxed when she saw Lu Huailin standing there.
Smiling, she said, “Xiao Lu, you’re back.”
Lu Huailin used the water that had been set out in the yard during the day to rinse his feet briefly and said to her, “Grandma, go back and rest.”
“I’ll go make you a bowl of noodles,” Grandma Gu replied.
Without waiting for his answer, she walked straight into the kitchen.
Lying in bed, Gu Yihan listened to Lu Huailin’s voice in the courtyard and finally relaxed.
Twenty minutes later…
After finishing his noodles, Lu Huailin carefully opened the bedroom door, afraid of waking Gu Yihan.
“Why are you back so late?” she suddenly asked.
He was startled. “Something held me up.”
Feeling his way through the dark, he walked over to her and whispered, “Wife, why are you still awake?”
“You didn’t go on a mission, yet you didn’t come home so late. How could I sleep?” Gu Yihan glared at him in the darkness.
Warmth filled Lu Huailin’s heart. After getting into bed, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her forehead.
“It’s my fault.”
Gu Yihan wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her head in his chest.
Softly, she said, “Next time, tell the family in advance. Then we won’t wait for you to eat together.”
He nodded and murmured in agreement.
Then he added casually, “By the way, wife, your textile factory has brought in a new secretary to help Secretary Jiang.”
As he gently patted her back, he spoke in an offhand tone.
Gu Yihan suddenly lifted her head and bumped into his chin. Ignoring the pain, she asked in surprise, “What happened?”
Thinking of Secretary Jiang’s shady tactics, Lu Huailin sighed.
“He bribed a few hooligans to harass Zeng Xiao, then staged a ‘hero saving the beauty’ scene.”
Gu Yihan twitched her lips. “That’s the oldest and worst cliché in history.”
Lu Huailin chuckled. “As long as it works. Zeng Xiao’s father is a deputy director in the Ministry of Industry. He has real power. Otherwise, Secretary Jiang wouldn’t have targeted her.”
“Zeng Xiao?”
“She’s the broadcaster at your factory.”
Gu Yihan had a good impression of her—she seemed like a simple, innocent girl.
“If he marries Zeng Xiao, won’t it be easier for him to enter the Ministry of Industry?”
“Wife, you’re underestimating me. I already handed over the evidence of him hiring hooligans to Deputy Director Zeng.”
“Will he make Zeng Xiao divorce Secretary Jiang?” Gu Yihan asked.
“No. He’ll make sure Secretary Jiang never gets what he wants and has to depend on the Zeng family for the rest of his life,” Lu Huailin explained patiently.
For someone driven by ambition, being unable to rise in life was worse than death.
Gu Yihan sighed. “Why not just work steadily step by step? Why take shortcuts?”
Soon after, she drifted off to sleep.
Listening to her steady breathing, Lu Huailin tightened his embrace.
Softly, he murmured, “Wife, you’re mine.”
Earlier that night, he had run into Lin Yifei, who was drunk out of his mind.
He almost didn’t recognize him—he looked utterly dejected. Upon seeing Lu Huailin, Lin Yifei grabbed his collar tightly.
“Lu Huailin, you stole the happiness that should’ve been mine!”
Lu Huailin shoved him away coldly. “Commander Lin, are you sick?”
Lin Yifei staggered, steadied himself, and glared at him with bloodshot eyes.
“Gu Yihan is my woman!”
Lu Huailin’s anger flared. This disgusting man actually dared to covet his wife.
“It’s true, Gu Yihan…” Before Lin Yifei could finish, Lu Huailin punched him in the face.
Both were outstanding officers in the Kun City unit. Even drunk, Lin Yifei was no pushover. For a while, they were evenly matched.
The night patrol soldiers noticed the two commanders “sparring” and gathered to watch. Realizing something was wrong, they hurried over and pulled them apart.
They were both severely reprimanded by their superiors and made to write 2,000-word self-criticisms before being dismissed.
The next day…
After breakfast, Gu Yihan kissed Haohua, who was learning to walk, said goodbye to Grandma Gu, and rode her bicycle out.
At the Textile Factory Accounting Office…
Thinking about Secretary Jiang’s uncomfortable future, Gu Yihan felt pleased.
She walked lightly to her desk and sat down.
Just then, Wang Guixiang came over and handed her a letter from her bag.
“Xiao Han, this is from Director Fu.”
Gu Yihan didn’t take it. She looked up calmly.
“Sister Guixiang, I don’t know Director Fu.”
Wang Guixiang widened her eyes. “Director Fu from the provincial garment factory? How could you not know her?”
Fu Ling?
Why was she looking for her?
Seeing Gu Yihan lower her head in silence, Wang Guixiang placed the letter on her desk.
“She really has something important to discuss,” she said, then returned to her seat.
Sister Min watched the interaction quietly, her eyes narrowing.
The provincial garment factory wasn’t like this small textile factory. Housing there was allocated internally, and workers had full benefits. They even had their own residential compound.
Unlike this place, which didn’t even have a factory doctor.
Seeing her name on the envelope, Gu Yihan didn’t open it. She put it straight into her drawer.
“Xiao Han, do you know? Hu Shan had a miscarriage,” Wang Min said with a pout.
Gu Yihan glanced at her. “Since you know, why didn’t you buy something to visit her?”
“That’s right,” Wang Guixiang agreed. “We’re colleagues after all. She must be feeling awful. Let’s buy something and visit her after work.”
“Sister Min, it’s settled. We’ll go together after work,” Gu Yihan said with a smile, looking straight at her.
Under their gaze, Sister Min forced a smile. “Alright.”
“Oh, right. I’ll bring two jin of meat and two jin of brown sugar. You two can decide on the rest,” Gu Yihan added, giving Sister Min a sidelong look.
She didn’t need to spend money anyway—she had plenty in her storage space.
“I’ll match Xiao Han’s spending,” Wang Guixiang said.
Sister Min’s face twitched. Her heart ached—this would cost several yuan, wasted on someone unrelated.
Gu Yihan glanced at her.
As long as Sister Min felt uncomfortable, she felt happy.
