The Zhou Family
After finishing his training, Zhou Jun returned home. He washed up briefly at the porcelain basin in the courtyard.
Picking up a towel from the rack, he wiped his face and called toward the bedroom, “Wife…”
“Dad, stop calling. Mom isn’t home.” In the living room, Zhou Jianghe replied loudly while watching TV, wrinkling his nose.
Not at home?
Zhou Jun put down the towel and walked into the living room, glancing at Zhou Jianghe. “Son, where did your mom go?”
Without turning his head, his eyes still fixed on the TV, Zhou Jianghe answered perfunctorily, “She’s at the neighbor’s.”
Zhou Jun nodded when he heard this and didn’t think much of it. Su Nian hadn’t interacted much with the other military wives since moving to the compound.
Staying cooped up at home every day wasn’t good for her health. He was actually glad she went to visit Gu Yihan.
At that moment, Zhou Yan deliberately ran up behind Zhou Jun, wearing torn clothes.
“Brother, you have to stand up for me!”
Her shrill cry startled Zhou Jun.
When he turned and saw her disheveled clothes, he immediately turned away.
He scolded, “Zhou Yan, straighten your clothes before talking to me.”
While wiping her tears, Zhou Yan adjusted her clothes.
She had torn her top on purpose, just to frame Su Nian.
After all, she couldn’t take that beating for nothing. Someone had to take the blame.
After fixing herself up, Zhou Yan walked in front of Zhou Jun and deliberately lifted her face so he could see clearly. She sobbed, “Brother, look at how my sister-in-law beat me.”
Zhou Jun’s gaze fell on the slap mark on her cheek, and he frowned slightly.
His eyes grew darker. “Your sister-in-law hit you?”
He knew what kind of person Su Nian was.
Because of her background, she was always afraid of causing him trouble. She endured whatever she could. How could she possibly hit Zhou Yan?
Seeing that Zhou Jun didn’t believe her, Zhou Yan immediately walked over to Zhou Jianghe, who was watching TV, and patted his shoulder.
“Jianghe, didn’t your mom hit Auntie’s face?”
Zhou Jianghe’s view was blocked. He looked up at her cheek, then turned to Zhou Jun and said, “Dad, Auntie’s face was hit by Mom.”
Zhou Jun frowned deeply and looked at both Zhou Yan and Zhou Jianghe.
Regardless of whether Su Nian had hit Zhou Yan, the attitude of this aunt and nephew was suspicious.
“Brother, if you don’t believe me, don’t you believe Jianghe? He’s your own son,” Zhou Yan said pitifully.
Zhou Jun glanced at her. Of course he believed his son—but between his son and his wife, he trusted his wife more.
Zhou Jianghe, annoyed that Zhou Yan was blocking the TV, turned to Zhou Jun anxiously.
“Dad, Mom and Auntie argued. I told Mom to apologize, and she got mad at me.”
Hearing this, Zhou Jun grabbed Zhou Jianghe and raised his hand as if to hit him.
Seeing this, Zhou Yan panicked, afraid the boy would blurt out nonsense. She quickly pulled him into her arms.
“Brother, Jianghe is still so young. He wouldn’t lie.”
Zhou Jun gave Zhou Yan a cold look, said nothing, and turned to leave the living room.
“Auntie, I said what you taught me. Can I have the White Rabbit milk candy now?”
Zhou Jianghe didn’t realize how serious his lie was. He was only thinking about the snacks Zhou Yan had promised.
In his limited memory, Su Nian always forbade him from eating this or that. Only Auntie Zhou Yan secretly gave him treats.
Zhou Yan curled her lips into a smug smile and patted his head.
“Wait here. Auntie will go get it from your mom’s room.”
The Lu Family
Gu Grandma was picking vegetables in the courtyard. Hearing the door open, she thought Lu Huailin had come back.
She looked up smiling, but when she saw Zhou Jun, she greeted him instead.
“Commander Zhou, you’re back.”
“Yes.” Zhou Jun asked, “Grandma Gu, is Su Nian at your place?”
Gu Grandma put down her work, stood up, wiped her hands on her apron, and walked over.
She sighed softly. “Commander Zhou, how could a sister-in-law beat her sister-in-law?”
“Your Su Nian has been crying here all afternoon. Her eyes are swollen.”
Hearing this, Zhou Jun immediately understood that Zhou Yan and Zhou Jianghe had lied.
“Grandma Gu, I…”
Before he could finish, Su Nian came out holding the child.
“I thought I heard your voice.”
Zhou Jun hurried over and wrapped an arm around her waist.
Seeing her still-swollen eyes, a flash of heartache crossed his gaze.
In a low voice, he said, “Wife, you’ve suffered.”
Su Nian looked up at him. Her eyes instantly turned red. She shook her head and sobbed, “I’m not suffering.”
Gu Grandma looked at her and clicked her tongue, shaking her head.
“Xiao Su, if you’re wronged, tell Commander Zhou and let him stand up for you.”
Su Nian smiled at her. “Grandma Gu, thank you and Xiao Han today. We’ll head back now.”
Gu Grandma nodded with a smile, thinking to herself: Hurry and go. She’s so weak.
Getting bullied and still putting up with it—she’s worse than an uneducated old woman like me.
Zhou Jun said goodbye to Gu Grandma with a smile.
He took Zhou Ni from Su Nian’s arms and looked at her lovingly.
“Wife, did Zhou Yan bully you?”
Su Nian glanced at him, smiled faintly, and said nothing.
Seeing that she still wouldn’t speak despite being so wronged, Zhou Jun felt even more guilty.
“Wife, this time you must listen to me. We’re sending Zhou Yan back to our hometown.”
Su Nian looked at him worriedly. “Mother won’t agree.”
Holding Zhou Ni in one hand and tightly gripping Su Nian’s hand with the other, Zhou Jun comforted her softly.
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.”
“Okay.” This time, Su Nian agreed readily.
“By the way, let Zhou Jianghe go back with her too,” Zhou Jun added.
“This…” Su Nian thought about Zhou Jianghe’s attitude toward her and couldn’t continue.
“He’s old enough. Let him go back and toughen up. Otherwise, he won’t even be able to tell wheat from chives in the future.”
Su Nian couldn’t help laughing. “Are you talking about me?”
Zhou Jun looked at her fair face. “Wife, he can’t compare to you. You’re someone I’ll support for a lifetime.”
“He’ll have to rely on himself in the future.”
Zhou Jun didn’t tell Su Nian that Zhou Jianghe had helped Zhou Yan lie, so as not to hurt her.
Since that brat had lived too comfortably for too long, it was time for him to suffer a bit.
