The family of four sat neatly around the dining table as Lu Huailin busied himself serving rice.
Gu Yihan had been hungry for a long time. As soon as Grandma Gu picked up her chopsticks, she couldn’t wait to grab a piece of braised pork and put it into her mouth.
She couldn’t help nodding. It was fatty but not greasy—much better than what she usually made.
“Grandma, I’ll go buy some meat at the supply and marketing cooperative next week. Then you can show off your skills again,” Gu Yihan said.
As she spoke, her hands didn’t stop moving. She took a bite of rice, then a piece of meat.
Grandma Gu glanced at her unhappily. “There are no meat coupons left at home.”
Gu Yihan raised her eyes, then picked up a piece of braised pork and put it into Grandma Gu’s bowl.
Smiling, she said, “It’s fine, Grandma. I’ll exchange with a colleague. She has extra meat coupons.”
Lu Huailin filled Haohua’s small wooden bowl with soft rice and placed it in front of him.
Then he turned to Grandma Gu with a smile. “Grandma, our family isn’t short of money.”
“As long as my wife wants to eat meat, I’ll find a way to satisfy her.”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan’s lips curved upward. She liked hearing that.
Grandma Gu looked at Lu Huailin and laughed. “You’ve spoiled her rotten.”
Lu Huailin smiled without saying anything.
If he didn’t dote on his own wife, should he let other men do it instead?
Besides, he knew his wife was a meat lover, and their family could afford to let her eat well.
Gu Yihan looked at Haohua sitting in his wooden baby chair, carefully scooping tasteless soft rice into his mouth bit by bit.
Feeling sorry for him, she quickly dipped her chopsticks into some braised pork sauce while Grandma Gu wasn’t looking and lightly brushed it across his lips.
He instinctively smacked his lips. After tasting the flavor, his round eyes instantly lit up.
Holding his spoon, he pointed in the direction of the braised pork and shouted, “Wan… eat!”
Grandma Gu raised her head and thought he wanted more rice. She frowned.
Annoyed, she said, “Eat what? You spill more than you eat.”
She really didn’t understand why her granddaughter insisted on letting a ten-month-old eat by himself.
Food got everywhere, and it was a waste.
Seeing no one paying attention, Haohua patted Gu Yihan’s arm with one hand and pointed at the braised pork with the other, shouting, “Wan!”
“Oh, Haohua wants meat! Mommy will get you some,” Gu Yihan said loudly on purpose, glancing at Grandma Gu out of the corner of her eye.
Seeing no objection, she quickly picked up a piece, bit off the fatty skin, and put the lean meat into Haohua’s bowl.
Lu Huailin almost laughed out loud at her actions.
Grandma Gu glared at her and said with a headache, “Aren’t you afraid the lean meat will get stuck in his teeth?”
Gu Yihan grinned. “No, Grandma. Your braised pork melts in the mouth. It won’t get stuck.”
Grandma Gu looked at her smiling face and froze for a moment, remembering how she used to grin around her when she was little.
She sighed. “Little flatterer. It’s not that Grandma won’t let him eat meat. He’s too young. Eating meat might give him diarrhea.”
Gu Yihan put down her bowl and chopsticks. She was almost full.
She glanced at Lu Huailin, who was quietly eating, and smiled at Grandma Gu. “Don’t worry, Grandma. Haohua is very healthy.”
She often secretly gave Haohua water from her special space. Compared with other kids his age, his constitution was on another level.
The neighbor’s child from Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s family had gone to the hospital several times.
Her Haohua, on the other hand, hadn’t even sneezed once since birth.
10 p.m.
After coaxing Haohua to sleep, Gu Yihan stretched.
She heard the bedroom door open and knew Lu Huailin was back. She immediately closed her eyes and pretended to sleep.
Lu Huailin saw his wife lying on her side in a fitted cotton nightgown, her curves clearly visible.
He flipped onto the bed and pulled her tightly into his arms.
After waiting for a while and seeing no reaction, he chuckled. “Wife, stop pretending. Talk to me for a bit.”
Gu Yihan turned over, wrapped her arms around his neck, and stared at him silently.
Lu Huailin couldn’t hold back first.
Between kisses, he whispered, “Let me see if my wife missed me.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he sealed her lips.
Ten minutes later, Gu Yihan felt her lips go numb. She pushed him away and said hoarsely, “How did you know I was pretending?”
Lu Huailin laughed and scraped her nose lightly.
“Wife, I’m a soldier. I still have some alertness.”
Before she could reply, he flipped over and pinned her down.
The spring night was short and needed quenching.
The Next Day, When Gu Yihan woke up, Haohua was nowhere in sight.
She got dressed and walked out of the bedroom. Seeing Lu Huailin in the living room, she shot him a glare.
He walked over, took her soft hand, and said, “Wife, try the wontons I made.”
She looked him up and down in surprise. “You can cook?”
Lu Huailin smiled and served her a bowl. “You like them, so I practiced a few times.”
Gu Yihan glanced at him. She had never said she liked wontons. How did he know?
Lu Huailin felt it was worth learning when he saw her eat happily.
Last time in Beijing, Aunt He made wontons and dumplings. She didn’t eat a single dumpling but had plenty of wonton soup.
After breakfast, Lu Huailin rode his bike with Gu Yihan out of the residential compound toward the textile factory.
On the way, he said in a low voice, “Wife, Secretary Jiang from your factory has been looking for female comrades who can design clothes these past few days.”
Gu Yihan sneered. “He wants to go to the Industrial Bureau.”
Lu Huailin nodded while pedaling.
After returning from training, He Shengli had explained everything about Gu Yihan, Secretary Jiang, and Su Yonghong to him.
He had been so angry he almost flipped the table. The treasure he held in his hands had been bullied by a few pests.
“Wife, what do you think?” he asked.
Gu Yihan patted his back and tested him on purpose. “Can you investigate him?”
Lu Huailin laughed in exasperation.
His wife actually didn’t trust him enough and spoke like that.
“Yes, of course,” he said through gritted teeth. “Wife, you should just say boldly: ‘Lu Huailin, I hate Secretary Jiang. Think of a way to deal with him.’”
Gu Yihan couldn’t help laughing. “Speak properly. You’re not the emperor. ‘Deal with him,’ really?”
Seeing her smile, Lu Huailin pedaled even harder.
He laughed. “Don’t worry. I don’t believe someone so eager for quick success has no flaws.”
“Alright, I’ll wait for your good news,” Gu Yihan said with a smile.
As for Sister Min, she would find a way to deal with her herself.
