Before Su Nian left, Gu Yihan glanced at the watch on her wrist.
She advised, “Sister Su, your watch is too valuable. You’d better put it away.”
There were quite a few perceptive military wives in the residential compound. A watch worth over a thousand yuan could easily provoke jealousy and cause unnecessary trouble.
Su Nian was momentarily taken aback. She knew that Gu Yihan wouldn’t say something like this lightly.
She quickly nodded in agreement, thinking to put her watch away once she got home.
The Zhou Family, Zhou Yan saw her sister-in-law, Su Nian, returning from the Lu family, and hurriedly approached with her child in her arms. She whispered, “Sister-in-law, has Commander Lu returned yet?”
Su Nian looked at Zhou Yan in surprise and asked, “Are you talking about Gu Yihan’s partner?”
Zhou Yan’s face stiffened. She muttered softly, “It’s Commander Lu, not Gu Yihan’s partner.”
Yesterday morning, when she had gone to the cafeteria to buy breakfast, she had encountered Lu Huailin, who was exercising early. His sharp features and piercing gaze had left her almost breathless.
The muscular strength in his body as he ran exuded power. When his eyes swept over her, her heart nearly jumped out of her chest.
“Fever?”
Seeing Zhou Yan’s increasingly flushed cheeks, Su Nian quickly reached out to check her forehead, worried that she might be sick and infect the child at home.
Finding her temperature normal, she relaxed.
Zhou Yan held her child, turned around, and shyly said, “Sister-in-law, you still haven’t told me… has Commander Lu returned?”
Su Nian was startled by the squeaky tone in Zhou Yan’s voice, a shiver running down her spine and goosebumps rising all over.
She shot her a glance and replied irritably, “No sign of him.”
Zhou Yan’s eyes lit up. She immediately handed the little girl in her arms to Su Nian and said, “Sister-in-law, I’m going out for a while.”
Su Nian tightly held her daughter and called after Zhou Yan’s retreating figure, “It’s almost time to eat. Where are you going?”
What was going on with her little sister-in-law? Acting so strangely… she couldn’t possibly have taken a fancy to Gu Yihan’s partner, could she?
Shaking her head at her wandering thoughts, Su Nian muttered, “Impossible!”
Elsewhere, Zhou Jun walked side by side with Lu Huailin, recalling what Cheng Changzheng had instructed him.
He hesitated before speaking, “Commander Lu, do you know about what happened to Sister-in-law at the textile factory?”
Lu Huailin’s eyes flickered with a trace of puzzlement. “What happened?”
After Gu Yihan returned home, she never discussed work matters, just as he didn’t talk about military affairs at home.
Zhou Jun swallowed nervously, worried that if he revealed it, Lu Huailin might hit him. Who would want to hear rumors of ambiguity about his wife with someone else?
Even though he and Cheng Changzheng didn’t believe such rumors, Zhou Jun knew what kind of person his wife was.
A young lady with eyes on the top of her head, so infatuated with Commander Lu’s wife, must prove that his wife had good character.
Not to mention Gu Yihan’s connection with her classmates.
Lu Huailin was still their comrade from the same military district. No one could bully their military investigator and get away with it.
“There are a few careless people at the textile factory spreading rumors about sister-in-law.”
Hearing this, Lu Huailin stopped in his tracks. His gaze fixed on Zhou Jun as he coldly asked, “What rumors?”
Zhou Jun, seeing Lu Huailin pause, also stopped and quietly repeated what Cheng Changzheng had told him:
As well as how Su Yonghong had broadcasted Gu Yihan’s relationship with Secretary Jiang, so that the whole factory knew.
Lu Huailin’s eyes sharpened as he glared at Zhou Jun, gritting his teeth. “Who told you this?”
Seeing Lu Huailin’s anger rising, Zhou Jun immediately shook his head, deflecting responsibility.
Frantically, he explained, “Cheng Changzheng’s wife told him, and then he told me.”
It seemed Commander Lu was also human—he liked hearing good news, not bad.
As the saying goes, “One’s enemy dies but one survives”—he still ended up betraying Cheng Changzheng.
Lu Huailin gave Zhou Jun a long, penetrating look but said nothing further.
In his heart, however, he wanted nothing more than to skin Secretary Jiang alive. How dare that scoundrel tarnish his wife’s reputation?
Seeing that Lu Huailin did not suggest a confrontation, Zhou Jun breathed a sigh of relief.
No way could he win against this guy.
On the way back, neither spoke until Zhou Jun heard a high-pitched call.
“Brother! Brother!”
He couldn’t immediately recognize the voice as Zhou Yan’s.
“She’s looking for you.”
Lu Huailin’s deep voice sounded in Zhou Jun’s ear. Instinctively, he turned toward the sound.
He saw his little sister, Zhou Yan, running in their direction.
Zhou Yan ran to Zhou Jun’s side, furtively glancing at Lu Huailin beside him.
Then she whispered into Zhou Jun’s ear, “Brother, we made braised pork at home. Should we invite Commander Lu to dinner?”
Zhou Jun’s pupils constricted sharply. Without thinking, he raised his arm and slapped Zhou Yan across the face.
He yelled, “Which wandering ghost has possessed my sister?”
Zhou Yan was stunned by the slap, about to curse.
Catching a glimpse of Lu Huailin out of the corner of her eye, she forced herself to hold back.
A flash of disgust crossed Lu Huailin’s eyes. He sneered, “Commander Zhou, you’d better find someone who knows a thing or two to teach this little girl a lesson. She’s not very experienced.”
Saying that, he walked past the Zhou siblings and headed toward his own courtyard.
Zhou Jun saw Zhou Yan staring foolishly at Lu Huailin’s retreating figure. Enraged, his blood boiled.
“What a disgraceful girl!”
Leaving the words hanging, he didn’t even glance at Zhou Yan and stormed home.
Su Nian, holding her seven-month-old daughter in one arm and trying to comfort her older son who was crying on her lap, was furious.
Holding the little girl, she scolded the older son, “You’ve wasted a whole extra year of growth! You’re almost five and can’t even beat a four-year-old brat!”
Zhou Jianghe wailed again, crying, “I’m not five, I’m four!”
Seeing her eldest son crying even harder, Su Nian scoffed, “Louder! Might as well train your lungs.”
She kept glancing toward the door. Zhou Yan had been gone for a while—why hadn’t she returned yet?
Instead of Zhou Yan, Zhou Jun arrived.
She immediately shouted at him in the courtyard, “Hurry! Your son deserved that beating. Couldn’t handle a fight outside, now he’s back home whining at me!”
“Wife, Zhou Yan can’t stay in the residential compound anymore.”
Zhou Jun quickly walked to Su Nian, bent down, and picked up the eldest son with a cold tone.
Seeing Zhou Jun frowning, Su Nian asked, puzzled, “What’s wrong?”
Zhou Jun gritted his teeth. “Of all people, she’s set her sights on Lu Huailin. She shamelessly tried to stick herself onto him, as if he wouldn’t notice her filthy intentions.”
Su Nian froze, only recovering after a long moment. She said in disbelief, “Has she lost her mind?”
Otherwise, how could she fall for a married man?
