“Ah!”
Gu Yihan’s shoulder was suddenly bumped by Ye Qingqing, who had rushed out of the accounting office.
The lunchbox in her hand slipped and fell straight to the floor.
“Are you blind or what?!” Ye Qingqing clutched her chest, which hurt from the collision, glaring angrily at Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan steadied herself against the wall, narrowing her eyes as she looked at Ye Qingqing.
“If you’re sick, go to the hospital. Don’t come into our accounting office acting crazy for no reason.”
Those words made Ye Qingqing furious. She stormed up to Gu Yihan, raised her arm, and tried to slap her.
Gu Yihan dodged swiftly and kicked Ye Qingqing in the stomach, sending her sprawling to the ground with a thud.
Bending down, Gu Yihan picked up the fallen lunchbox, giving Ye Qingqing a sharp look. Did she really think she was some trash bin she could vent her emotions on whenever she wanted?
Secretary Jiang wasn’t a good person, and neither was anyone who liked him—they really were a match made in stink.
Ye Qingqing sat on the ground, clutching her stomach, stunned, eyes wide as she stared at Gu Yihan picking up the lunchbox. “How dare you kick me!”
Gu Yihan stood up and looked at her coldly. “I’m not your parents. If you want to hit someone, don’t blame me for hitting back.”
“Xiao Han—”
Gu Yihan heard Hu Shan’s voice and turned, thinking she had come out to plead on Ye Qingqing’s behalf.
She snorted coldly. “Sister Shan, Ye Qingqing isn’t a textile factory worker. She has no business being in the accounting office.”
Hu Shan was momentarily stunned. In all the time they’d known each other, this was the first time Gu Yihan had spoken to her so coldly.
She quickly apologized, “I’m sorry, Xiao Han. I won’t let Ye Qingqing come over again.”
Hu Shan felt genuinely guilty—she had brought Ye Qingqing to the office, which caused the conflict with Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan gave her a sidelong glance, nodded slightly, and walked past Hu Shan straight back to the office.
Hu Shan glanced at Ye Qingqing sitting on the ground, sighed, and went over to help her up.
“Qingqing, I was only trying to help you,” she said.
Ye Qingqing waved her off. “I don’t need your fake kindness.”
If it weren’t for her sarcastic remarks about Secretary Jiang already marrying some other girl, Gu Yihan wouldn’t have collided with her.
Ye Qingqing rubbed her lower stomach—she was on her period and already uncomfortable, and now Gu Yihan had kicked her.
Her anger had nowhere to go. She glared at Hu Shan and turned to leave.
Hu Shan watched Ye Qingqing’s retreating figure. She hadn’t lied—Secretary Jiang and the girl from the factory’s broadcast room had indeed gotten their marriage certificate, they just hadn’t held a wedding banquet.
Gu Yihan noticed Hu Shan walking back to her workstation, looking dejected, and touched her stomach absentmindedly.
“Sister Shan,” she said casually, “I hear Secretary Jiang’s getting married soon.”
Hu Shan looked up, astonished. “Xiao Han, how do you know Secretary Jiang is married?”
Married?
Gu Yihan kept her expression neutral, smiled faintly, and probed subtly, “I heard the person he chose has a decent family background.”
Hu Shan’s eyes widened. “Xiao Han, how do you know everything?”
She had, by coincidence, run into Secretary Jiang and the girl from the broadcast room at the department store that weekend. They were acting intimately while choosing clothes.
She had secretly followed them to the civil affairs office and witnessed them obtaining their marriage certificate.
Thinking of this, Hu Shan straightened her back and lifted her head proudly.
“Well, she’s not particularly special, just a junior clerk at the Industrial Bureau. Compared to my family, she’s a bit inferior.”
A glint of understanding passed through Gu Yihan’s eyes. She smiled. “Secretary Jiang’s luck is pretty good.”
Hu Shan pouted, about to badmouth Secretary Jiang, when the office door opened.
Sister Min walked in first, followed by Wang Guixiang. Both carried lunchboxes.
Sister Min smiled and said to Gu Yihan, “Xiao Han, you ate lunch really quickly.”
They were going to join Gu Yihan at her table, but before they could reach her, Secretary Jiang sat directly opposite her.
In the blink of an eye, they were gone.
Gu Yihan glanced at Sister Min, nodded, and returned to her bookkeeping.
After work, Gu Yihan rode her bicycle back to the residential compound.
From a distance, she saw Grandma Gu standing at Su Nian’s door, talking to someone.
As she approached and got a better look, her brows furrowed, her eyes sharp with caution.
“How did you get in here?” she asked coldly.
Qin Shou’s eyes flicked over Gu Yihan, and he smiled. “Little sister, of course brother-in-law let me in.”
He even gave her a flirtatious wink, thinking it was cool.
Gu Yihan narrowed her eyes slightly and glanced at Grandma Gu, who was standing silently nearby.
Not wanting to press in front of outsiders, she smiled and walked over. “Grandma, you should go home first. Haohao’s at home alone, and your granddaughter’s worried.”
Seeing her little granddaughter wasn’t angry, Grandma Gu relaxed and smiled. “Alright, I’ll head home first.”
As she turned and walked back to the courtyard, Qin Shou called out to her back, “Grandma, don’t forget what your grandson-in-law said!”
Gu Yihan didn’t wait for her grandmother to reply. She said coldly, “Don’t come to the compound again.”
Click.
Su Nian opened the door, interrupting Qin Shou, who was about to speak.
Seeing Gu Yihan with her bicycle, she exclaimed happily, “Xiao Han, you’re back from work!”
Gu Yihan smiled. “Just got back.”
Su Nian had something to tell her, so she hurried over.
Meanwhile, Qin Shou, still lingering, noticed Su Nian holding Gu Yihan’s wrist and drew a sharp breath.
This woman was seriously rich—an imported diamond-studded watch, costing over a thousand.
Gu Yihan, sensing Qin Shou’s gaze, led Su Nian inside, one hand on her bike, the other on Su Nian.
In the living room, Su Nian sat on the sofa, taking the water cup Gu Yihan handed her, and smiled slightly.
Quietly, she said, “Xiao Han, that man at the door just now is not a good person.”
Gu Yihan asked, “Did you hear something?”
Su Nian sipped her water and turned to look out the window at Grandma Gu standing in the yard.
She told Gu Yihan everything she had overheard:
After Gu Meng became pregnant, Qin Shou complained that she was swollen all over and unable to do housework.
He hoped Grandma Gu, out of familial love, would pity the couple.
Between the lines, he blamed Grandma Gu for favoritism—treating the granddaughters differently.
“Xiao Han, you need to be prepared. It seems your grandmother agreed to them,” Su Nian warned.
Gu Yihan smiled faintly. “Thank you, Sister Su.”
She understood that Su Nian meant well. Grandma Gu hadn’t told her directly, so she pretended not to know. She wouldn’t let uncertain matters damage the bond between grandmother and granddaughter.
