Next day, Gu Yihan yawned as she walked out of the bedroom and glanced at Lu Huailin, who was sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper.
“Wow, this is rare,” she said in surprise. “Seeing you at home this late is unusual.”
Lu Huailin put down the newspaper, stood up, and walked over to his wife, taking her hand and leading her to the sofa.
Then he wrapped his arm around her waist and whispered softly, “Wife, I want to kiss you.”
Gu Yihan froze for a moment, and before she could react, Lu Huailin had already held the back of her head and pressed his lips against hers.
“Ouch!”
Grandma Gu had just pushed open the living room door, quickly covered her eyes, and retreated.
Muttering to herself, she said, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll get a stye at this age?”
Hearing Grandma Gu’s voice, Gu Yihan pushed Lu Huailin away and glared at him. “Grandma just saw us.”
“Wife, we’re legally married!” Lu Huailin said with a cheeky grin, leaning close to whisper in her ear.
Gu Yihan ignored him, stood up, and walked over to the dining table.
She poured herself a glass of water and deliberately signaled Lu Huailin to serve her food.
Hearing this, Lu Huailin smiled and walked over to her.
Sitting next to her, he not only served the rice but also peeled the eggs for her.
After the family finished breakfast, Lu Huailin took his wife’s hand and led her to the yard, patting the back of the bicycle.
“Wife, today I’ll be your chauffeur,” he said.
Gu Yihan looked at Lu Huailin suspiciously. “Did you take the day off?”
Lu Huailin just nodded with a smile and didn’t explain.
At the entrance of the small courtyard
Just as Gu Yihan sat on the bicycle, Aunt Chen’s gate opened.
A stranger walked out—a tall, sturdy man, probably over 1.85 meters.
The stranger glanced at Gu Yihan sitting on the back of the bicycle.
Then he turned to Lu Huailin and smiled. “Commander Lu.”
Lu Huailin nodded slightly. “Good morning, Commander Zhou.”
“Hey, don’t forget to buy lunch from the cafeteria when you come back this afternoon,” Zhou said.
Hearing the familiar voice, Gu Yihan looked toward Aunt Chen’s yard in confusion.
Commander Zhou shouted toward the yard, “Got it, wife!”
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Commander Zhou took his leave.
Lu Huailin’s eyes narrowed slightly as he couldn’t help but ask, “Wife, what are you looking at?”
Gu Yihan withdrew her gaze from Commander Zhou and lightly patted Lu Huailin’s arm.
Irritated, she said, “We’ll be late if we don’t leave.”
Watching Commander Zhou’s retreating figure, Lu Huailin raised his hand to his face, thinking to himself that he’d better secretly apply some of his wife’s snow cream at night to take care of his skin.
Seeing Lu Huailin dazed and showing no sign of leaving, Gu Yihan gave him a firm slap on the back.
“Why haven’t you left yet?” she said.
Startled by his wife’s sudden attack, Lu Huailin snapped back to reality and shouted at the bicycle, “Alright, alright!”
Sitting sideways on the bicycle, Gu Yihan kept thinking: Commander Zhou’s wife’s voice sounded so familiar. Where had she heard it before?
Outside the textile factory
Just as Gu Yihan got off the bicycle, she saw Hu Shan and Ye Qingqing approaching, each riding a bicycle.
Hu Shan glanced at Lu Huailin next to Gu Yihan and smiled. “Xiaohan.”
Gu Yihan smiled and greeted Hu Shan, chatting briefly.
Seeing Gu Yihan pretending not to notice her, Ye Qingqing pouted and spoke to Lu Huailin, “Are you Assistant Gu’s lover?”
Lu Huailin didn’t even look at Ye Qingqing, turning instead to whisper to Gu Yihan, “Wife, I’ll go first.”
“Okay,” Gu Yihan said, satisfied that Lu Huailin ignored Ye Qingqing.
“That person is your lover?” Ye Qingqing asked softly, walking her bicycle closer to Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan gave her a suspicious look. “What’s it to you?”
“You lover has no manners at all!” Ye Qingqing puffed her cheeks and muttered.
Gu Yihan’s expression turned cold. She glared at Ye Qingqing and said sharply, “Who do you think you are?”
Seeing the situation going south, Hu Shan quickly pushed her bicycle between Ye Qingqing and Gu Yihan. Smiling, she said, “Xiaohan, Qingqing and I will leave first.”
Before Gu Yihan could respond, she tried to pull Ye Qingqing’s bicycle aside.
“What are you pulling me for?” Ye Qingqing waved Hu Shan’s hand away, annoyed.
Hu Shan almost died from anger seeing Ye Qingqing act like that.
She had previously warned Gu Yihan to stay away from Secretary Jiang, worried that this brainless woman would latch on.
Now, it seems, Ye Qingqing had latched on to her instead.
Ye Qingqing glanced at Gu Yihan, deliberately stomped her foot, and snorted coldly, “I’m not wrong.”
Gu Yihan studied Ye Qingqing for a moment, then smiled.
“This is the first time I’ve seen someone puff out their cheeks on purpose while talking and stomp their feet pretending to act cute.”
Gu Yihan looked at Ye Qingqing meaningfully, then turned and walked away, smiling.
Ye Qingqing glared at Gu Yihan’s retreating back. “What does she mean?”
A female worker in the workshop couldn’t help but laugh at Gu Yihan’s remark.
“What are you laughing at?” Ye Qingqing turned in rage to the worker.
Hu Shan rubbed her temple, looking at the passing crowd.
She walked over to Ye Qingqing and whispered, “Qingqing, I’ll leave first.”
Without waiting for a reply, she pushed her bicycle and left.
Ye Qingqing hurried to catch up with Hu Shan, muttering, “Gu Yihan’s lover isn’t as good-looking as Brother Jiang.”
Hu Shan exhaled deeply and said bluntly, “Qingqing, how long do you plan to stay at my house?”
Ye Qingqing frowned and looked at Hu Shan. “I quarreled with your cousin and don’t want to stay at the apartment he rented.”
Hu Shan was furious.
She parked her bicycle, didn’t greet anyone, and walked straight toward the accounting office.
Just as Gu Yihan put her shoulder bag in the drawer, she saw Hu Shan enter with a dark expression, kicking a chair.
The sharp scraping sound of the chair against the floor made Gu Yihan quickly cover her ears.
“Sister Shan, have you forgotten you’re pregnant?” she asked.
Hu Shan instinctively touched her slightly protruding belly. “Almost four months.”
She steadied the chair and sat down, letting out a sigh. “Xiaohan, how do you think I can get rid of Ye Qingqing?”
Gu Yihan looked at Hu Shan in surprise. “Isn’t that Secretary Jiang’s problem? What does it have to do with you?”
Hu Shan rubbed her face and sighed, powerless. “She insists on staying at my house.”
Gu Yihan froze. “Stay at your house? Where does Brother Cheng live?”
Hu Shan lay her head on the table, resting her cheek on her arm, and said weakly, “Cheng Bo set up a simple bed in the living room.”
Gu Yihan looked at Hu Shan in disbelief. She couldn’t understand her reasoning—wasn’t she afraid Ye Qingqing would poach her place?
“Xiaohan, why are you looking at me like that? It’s weird,” Hu Shan immediately sat up and touched her face.
Gu Yihan thought for a moment, then said, “Sister Shan, your face is perfectly clean.”
Then she joked with a smile, “Sister Shan, you really trust Brother Cheng!”
Hu Shan smiled. As long as Cheng Bo was home, she didn’t have to do any housework.
She was quite satisfied with this. “Of course, I manage all the household finances.”
Gu Yihan didn’t say anything more and just smiled at her.
