The next morning, six o’clock.
For once, Lu Huailin didn’t have to do his morning exercise. He lay on his side, watching his wife and son in his arms.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
“Lu Huailin, come out, you bastard!”
The sound of the courtyard gate being banged echoed, accompanied by Shen Yujie’s furious shouting.
Instinctively, Lu Huailin looked down at the child in his wife’s arms. The little boy pursed his lips and cried: “Waa…”
Gu Yihan was startled awake by her son’s loud cries. She quickly sat up and saw Lu Huailin gently soothing the baby.
“Lu Huailin, you heartless, cruel man!”
Frowning, she took the child from Lu Huailin’s hands.
“Go see why Shen Yujie is going crazy this early in the morning.”
Lu Huailin nodded and, with a cold expression, walked out of the bedroom.
At the gate, Grandma Gu was furious. She pushed at the madman with her hands and scolded: “Are you out of your mind?”
Shen Yujie, in fact, was the one about to explode. Only last night did he find out that Lu Huailin had sent Qiao Shuhui to a labor reform farm.
If it hadn’t been too late to enter the family compound, he would have come over yesterday.
Lu Huailin reached the gate and kicked Shen Yujie, who was trying to push Grandma Gu.
Grandma Gu clutched her chest in fright. What kind of lunatic had suddenly appeared?
Shen Yujie’s eyes were bloodshot as he demanded, “Why are you doing this to Qiao Shuhui?”
Lu Huailin glanced at the crazed Shen Yujie, genuinely puzzled how he could lose all reason like this—just mention Qiao Shuhui, and he went completely irrational.
“She tried to harm my wife and son. Why else?”
Shen Yujie had already checked; the news had spread throughout the military hospital—no need to investigate further. Everyone who had worked with her had told him.
He roared, “Even so, there’s no reason to send her to a labor farm!”
Grandma Gu grabbed Lu Huailin’s arm. “You mean this Qiao woman wanted to hurt Xiaohan and Haohao?”
Lu Huailin nodded slightly and explained, “She instigated the maternity nurse to feed Haohao saline at a dangerous concentration.”
Grandma Gu’s heart skipped a beat. That could have killed her little grandson! Such a malicious woman—she should be shot!
Shen Yujie retorted, “But my sister-in-law and nephew are fine, aren’t they?”
Lu Huailin looked at Shen Yujie with eyes devoid of warmth, letting out a cold snort: “If anything had actually happened, do you think she would’ve survived to go to the farm?”
Shen Yujie’s gaze softened, pleading, no longer filled with the earlier fury: “Can you release Xiaohui, please?”
Grandma Gu’s chest heaved in anger. “How can you say such shameless things out loud?”
She turned to Lu Huailin and shouted, “Why even reason with someone like this? Back in our Gu village, we’d beat the crap out of them!”
Pfft. Vice Battalion Commander’s mother couldn’t help it. She had been woken up early by Shen Yujie’s shouting, listened for a long while, and still couldn’t make sense of the situation.
Just as Shen Yujie tried to argue with Grandma Gu, a sharp female voice cut in.
“Shen Yujie!”
He instinctively looked around, seeking somewhere to hide.
Lu Huailin and Grandma Gu turned toward the voice. Yu Shanyue stood there, one hand on her waist, the other pointing at Shen Yujie.
“Sneaking around early in the morning… you clearly have bad intentions. And I caught you.”
Before he could react, she darted like lightning to Shen Yujie and began slapping him wildly, giving him no chance to escape.
The soldiers who had come with Yu Shanyue were stunned. They had not expected her to be this fierce.
Auntie Chen, who came out at that moment, could only hear the “smack, smack” sounds. She watched in disbelief as Yu Shanyue’s slaps flew like punctuation marks.
Grandma Gu helped hold Shen Yujie down, preventing him from fleeing. She recognized him—he was a doctor from the military hospital and a good friend of Lu Huailin.
Auntie Chen quickly approached Lu Huailin and whispered, “Is this lady Shen doctor’s wife?”
Lu Huailin smiled and nodded.
Vice Battalion Commander’s mother and Auntie Chen exchanged a glance.
Once Yu Shanyue stopped, Lu Huailin called one of the guards, instructing him to drive Shen Yujie out of the family compound and never let him back in.
Turning to Yu Shanyue, he smiled: “Sister-in-law, want to come inside for a bit?”
Yu Shanyue waved her hand, glanced at Grandma Gu, and smiled: “I just wanted to chat with my sister-in-law.”
Meanwhile, Shen Yujie was being dragged away by the guard, stumbling in the direction of the family compound. He still dared not ask Lu Huailin to release Qiao Shuhui; if Yu Shanyue found out, he’d be in trouble.
In the bedroom, Gu Yihan, hearing footsteps, assumed Lu Huailin had dealt with Shen Yujie. She sat up, only to see Yu Shanyue enter.
“Shanyue, come sit.” she smiled.
Yu Shanyue went to the bedside, looked down at the sleeping child, and pulled a gold lock from her pocket, handing it to her with a smile: “A gift for the baby.”
Gu Yihan glanced at Lu Huailin, who silently nodded. She accepted it with a smile.
As Yu Shanyue sat, she dropped a bombshell: “I’m getting a divorce.”
Gu Yihan raised her brows in surprise. “Divorcing Shen Yujie?” she asked softly.
Lu Huailin moved closer, cautiously glancing at their son.
Yu Shanyue sighed, admiring the small family. “I’m planning to join the army.”
Lu Huailin gave her a sidelong glance: “The path is cleared?”
Yu Shanyue nodded with a smile, then spoke seriously: “I’m here today to apologize. I used you.”
Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin exchanged a look. She asked, puzzled: “Used us? How do you mean?”
Seeing Lu Huailin’s face grow cold, Yu Shanyue realized he had guessed.
She explained to Gu Yihan: “Xiaohan, I was the one who leaked the news to Shen Yujie that Qiao Shuhui was sent to the labor reform farm.”
Gu Yihan was stunned. She had no idea about Qiao Shuhui.
Lu Huailin sat on the bed, holding his wife’s hand, and recounted everything Qiao Shuhui had done.
Gu Yihan listened quietly, her face revealing nothing, but inside, she was in turmoil. If she hadn’t discharged immediately, they could never have defended against it.
Seeing his wife silent, Lu Huailin worried she might be angry, concerned it could affect her recovery: “Wife, you can’t get angry during your confinement.”
Gu Yihan smiled at him, then looked at Yu Shanyue: “How does this relate to your divorce?”
Yu Shanyue sighed. Shen Yujie had been well-behaved at home these past months and hadn’t secretly contacted Qiao Shuhui. She couldn’t find an excuse to ask for divorce.
Unilaterally ending the marriage would hurt both families’ long-standing relationship. Only if Shen Yujie had actually done something wrong could she divorce without offending his parents and still preserve the families’ bond.
Gu Yihan’s eyes widened in disbelief: “So you knew Shen Yujie would go crazy when he heard about Qiao Shuhui, and you took the chance to divorce him?”
Yu Shanyue smiled apologetically: “I’m sorry, Xiaohan…”
Lu Huailin interrupted: “Since your purpose is achieved, you may leave.”
Yu Shanyue froze. She hadn’t expected Lu Huailin to be so direct. After quietly saying goodbye to Gu Yihan, she stood up and left.
