Kun City Public Security Bureau – Interrogation Room

Lu Huailin pushed open the door, his sharp eyes sweeping over Qiao Shuhui, who was tied to a chair.

He paced to her and stopped in front of her. “Why did you switch the babies?”

Ever since Lu Huailin learned who was behind the scheme, he had been baffled.

His wife had very little contact with Lin Yifei’s ex-wife, so he couldn’t understand what benefit she could possibly gain from swapping the children.

Qiao Shuhui, ever since she was caught in the act by those ex-military men, knew that Lu Huailin had intervened.

She twisted in the chair, her eyes crazed as they stared at Lu Huailin.

The jealousy in her gaze was uncontrollable.

“Why can Gu Yihan have such a good life while mine is so miserable?”

Lu Huailin couldn’t help but laugh angrily. Did his wife’s good fortune really have to provoke jealousy?

“What are you even comparing to my wife?” he snapped.

Hearing this, Qiao Shuhui was infuriated. How could it be that with her interference in their lives, Gu Yihan still married a soldier, affecting her own fate?

Even her son in her womb wasn’t safe—so why was Gu Yihan able to give birth safely?

Lu Huailin didn’t need to ask further; Qiao Shuhui was clearly a madwoman controlled entirely by jealousy: “You will pay for what you’ve done.”

After saying this, Lu Huailin left the interrogation room and headed toward Director Fu’s office.

Director Fu, sitting behind his desk, saw Lu Huailin enter, stood up, and walked over, patting his shoulder. “How do you want to handle this?”

Lu Huailin replied, “Send her to the harshest labor reform farm for a few years.”

Director Fu raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that too harsh? That Shi Lan is surely going to be sentenced to labor reform anyway.”

“Qiao Shuhui is guilty of attempted instigation,” Lu Huailin said, his face dark. “It didn’t succeed only because my wife was careful.”

“If it weren’t for Grandma Gu, my wife and son would have been harmed by her. Sending her to the labor farm is still lenient.”

Director Fu couldn’t help but twitch at the corner of his mouth. That farm was no place for humans; most of the inmates were male labor reform prisoners.

For a woman like Qiao Shuhui to go there, she probably wouldn’t survive physically more than a few years.

Sighing, Director Fu said, “Alright, I’ll help you.”

As for Shi Lan, the midwife nurse, Director Fu recounted their investigation in detail.

It turned out Shi Lan was originally a nurse from another department. Due to negligence in patient care, she was reported by a patient.

Head Nurse Cao transferred her to the maternity ward as a midwife.

Not only did she have a character problem, but she was also greedy, bribed by several families who couldn’t have sons. For money, she would help them swap babies during delivery.

Lu Huailin’s expression darkened; it was precisely because of her greed that his own child had nearly been switched.

Director Fu glanced at Lu Huailin and said solemnly, “Two of the victims are wives of soldiers in your military district.”

Lu Huailin instructed Director Fu to locate the swapped children and notify their parents, otherwise it would be a false joy.

Director Fu smirked at Lu Huailin. “Having a son really does make a difference.”

Lu Huailin ignored the mockery, completed his conversation, and then left.

The next day, The first to hear the news in the family compound was Zhang Xia, wife of Deputy Battalion Commander Wang.

She felt nauseous during breakfast, and Wang’s mother urged her to go to the hospital to see if she was pregnant.

Walking through the hospital corridor, she overheard the nurses gossiping.

Young Nurse: “Did you hear? Shi Lan got caught switching babies in the maternity ward.”

Another female nurse scoffed, “I never liked her. Not only did she harm herself, she also implicated Head Nurse Cao.”

“Yeah… don’t mention it. Two unlucky soldier wives in the military district also had their babies switched by Shi Lan.”

Zhang Xia heard them talking about switched babies. Even in the military district, no one was safe.

Considering that recently only Gu Yihan had given birth, could it be that her baby had been switched too?

Being timid, Zhang Xia didn’t dare undergo the check-up and quickly left the hospital.

Wang’s mother, seeing Zhang Xia return pale-faced, thought it was because the test showed she wasn’t pregnant. She tried to console her: “It’s okay, you’re still young. Plenty of time.”

Zhang Xia grabbed her arm, her voice trembling: “Mother… the child in Colonel Lu’s family might not be his.”

Wang’s mother froze, puzzled, and touched Zhang Xia’s forehead—no fever. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

She immediately scolded, “They’re happily married. How could you say that?”

Zhang Xia quickly explained what she had overheard at the hospital.

Wang’s mother looked at her and asked skeptically, “Really?”

After all, she had heard from her son that Lu Huailin’s wife had given birth to a boy.

Zhang Xia nodded repeatedly and pointed to her ears. “I heard it with my own ears.”

Wang’s mother paced in the living room, feeling uneasy, and instructed Zhang Xia: “You mustn’t spread this outside, understand?”

Zhang Xia was stunned. “Does that mean Colonel Lu’s whole family would be in the dark?”

Wang’s mother gave her a sharp look. “You fool. If you could hear it, surely others could too. But under no circumstances can this leave our home.”

Zhang Xia didn’t understand why it couldn’t be told outside, but she trusted her mother-in-law wouldn’t harm her, so she nodded quickly in agreement.

Lu Huailin returned home during the noon break.

Grandma Gu came out of the kitchen and smiled, “Hanhan hasn’t woken up yet. She’s been sleeping like this for days.”

Lu Huailin looked worried. She hadn’t woken up since the morning—she must be exhausted from childbirth.

“Grandma, I’ll go check on her.”

Grandma Gu smiled and nodded, urging, “Go on, quickly.”

Lu Huailin tiptoed to the bedside, his gaze soft as he looked at the mother and child, their little faces flushed.

Gu Yihan groggily opened her eyes, woken by the heat. She was in her confinement period in midsummer—suffering without open windows or the ability to wash her hair.

Seeing his wife awake, Lu Huailin quickly prepared a cup of brown sugar water, letting it cool beside some cold water.

After a short wait, he handed the drink to his wife. “Here, have some water.”

Gu Yihan took it and sipped. Just the right temperature.

“I can’t believe it… in just a few days, the baby looks completely different,” she said.

Lu Huailin smiled at the child. “Looks a lot like me. The skin might take after you.”

Gu Yihan smiled and looked at Lu Huailin. “How did you have time to come back at noon today?”

“I’ll be going back soon,” he said, leaning over to kiss her cheek. “Missed you, wanted to check on you.”

Gu Yihan gave him a sidelong glance. She knew him well enough—he must have come back last night after she fell asleep and hadn’t woken before leaving this morning. No wonder he was worried.
