Time flew by to July 5, 1971.
Gu Yihan had already started her maternity leave.
Now, she was waddling along with her nine-months-pregnant belly, holding a large palm fan and fanning herself vigorously as she walked.
Grandma Gu worriedly said, “Rest a bit. You should be giving birth within a day or two.”
Gu Yihan walked over and looped her arm around her grandmother’s, acting cute: “Grandma, let me go back to the bedroom and sit in front of the fan for a while.”
Since summer had arrived, her body temperature was higher due to pregnancy, and she only felt comfortable under the fan.
Grandma Gu refused, “No, the doctor calculated your due date for today. What if you catch a cold from the fan?”
No matter how adorably Gu Yihan pleaded, she couldn’t sway Grandma Gu, and the heat inside her only made her more uncomfortable.
Grandma Gu knew her little granddaughter was sensitive to heat and about to give birth; even the slightest risk worried her.
“Hold on a bit. Once Xiao Lu gets back, we’ll go to the hospital and stay there.”
Gu Yihan weakly murmured in agreement.
Not long after: “Wife! Wife!”
Lu Huailin pushed open the door and strode over to her, supporting her: “Let’s go to the hospital.”
He turned to Grandma Gu: “Grandma, I’ll help her into the car first.”
“All right, I’ll follow in a moment.”
With that, Grandma Gu hurried to the living room and grabbed the prepared maternity bag.
Lu Huailin opened the jeep door and carefully helped his wife settle in.
Xiao Wu cheerfully said, “Hello, sister-in-law.”
Seeing Xiao Wu, Gu Yihan thought of Maomao, who hadn’t come home in months: “Xiao Wu, how’s Maomao?”
“Maomao’s amazing now,” Xiao Wu said proudly. “He’s earned a lot of military honors—a truly outstanding military dog.”
Gu Yihan missed Maomao; after all, it had lived with her for so long. “Once I give birth, I can have Maomao come home more often.”
When Grandma Gu opened the front passenger door and heard her granddaughter talk about Maomao, she curiously asked, “Who’s Maomao?”
Xiao Wu scratched his head and smiled: “Maomao is the military dog sister-in-law raised.”
After Lu Huailin placed the maternity bag down, he sat beside Gu Yihan, tightly holding her hand.
Even on the way to the military hospital, Gu Yihan noticed her pants were wet and thought she had lost control of her bladder.
Embarrassed, she leaned close to Lu Huailin’s ear and whispered, “Husband, I think I peed my pants.”
Lu Huailin immediately asked, “Does your belly hurt?”
Gu Yihan shook her head and whispered, “Not at all.”
He studied her expression carefully, and seeing no sign of pain, he felt increasingly uneasy: “Xiao Wu, go faster! My wife is about to give birth!”
Xiao Wu nodded and sped up.
Grandma Gu anxiously asked, “Xiao Han, does your belly hurt?”
Gu Yihan truly felt no pain—just a trickle of fluid.
She guessed her water had broken and told the anxious Lu Huailin: “Husband, once the baby is born, you must take care of it.”
Lu Huailin nodded, rubbing her belly: “Don’t worry, I’ll watch over the baby.”
By the time they reached the hospital, Gu Yihan’s lower abdomen had started aching, and she was immediately pushed into the delivery room.
Lu Huailin tried to follow her in, but a young nurse snapped: “Why does a grown man want to go in?”
He hurried to explain: “It’s my wife who was just pushed in.”
The nurse replied irritably, “There are several pregnant women in there. Not everyone can be your wife.”
Seeing Grandma Gu arrive, he took the maternity bag from her: “Grandma, there are multiple women in labor. They won’t let me in.”
Panting, Grandma Gu said, “Let’s wait here first.”
He suddenly remembered what his wife had said about babies being swapped in the hospital and grew fearful.
If he wasn’t inside, and someone took the baby his wife risked her life to deliver…
“Granny, I’m worried someone will swap the baby.”
Grandma Gu was shocked: “Impossible, right?”
Then she recalled how her little granddaughter had been swapped by Liu Zhaodi as a child.
She couldn’t stay put either and told Lu Huailin: “Grandma has to go in and watch. What if Xiao Han gives birth to a son and some ill-intentioned person tries to swap him?”
She turned and walked toward the delivery room.
Lu Huailin finally relaxed, confident that Grandma Gu wouldn’t let anyone take his wife’s child.
Gu Yihan had secretly drunk a lot of water, thinking it would ease her abdominal pain, but it didn’t help at all.
The pain came in waves.
When Grandma Gu entered the delivery room, a nurse tried to stop her but was interrupted by the attending doctor: “Family presence helps the laboring woman.”
The nurse couldn’t stop her and turned to another nurse by a patient with a slight shake of the head.
Grandma Gu hurried to her granddaughter, holding her hand to comfort her: “Don’t be afraid, Grandma’s here. When I gave birth to your father, I didn’t even feel it—I just delivered right on the ground.”
Gu Yihan gave her grandmother a weak smile.
An hour later, Gu Yihan’s contractions were coming closer and closer. She felt the baby was about to be born, probably helped by the space’s water effect.
Although the contractions were frequent, the pain had slightly eased.
Gripping her grandmother’s hand tightly through the pain, she said, “Grandma, don’t let anyone take the baby.”
With several women in labor at the same time, what if the babies got mixed up?
Grandma Gu nodded repeatedly, promising that no one would touch the baby.
The attending doctor checked manually and said, “Fully dilated. Time to push.”
Holding her breath, Gu Yihan exerted herself: “Ah—”
The doctor slapped her leg: “Don’t hold your breath. Push with all your strength!”
Startled, Gu Yihan instinctively protested: “I’m trying!”
Seeing the doctor treat her roughly, Grandma Gu’s heart ached: “How can you hit her?”
The doctor ignored her: “Push like you would on the toilet.”
Soon, a woman who had entered the delivery room before Gu Yihan gave birth. Her first words: “Boy or girl?”
Nurse Shi didn’t answer, frowning as she glanced at Gu Yihan.
She asked again: “Boy or girl?”
Nurse Shi replied casually: “Boy.”
Hearing it was a boy, the woman smiled with joy.
Following the doctor’s instructions, Gu Yihan pushed. Before long, she felt something slide out.
“Wah—”
The baby’s cry rang out.
Grandma Gu’s eyes lit up, watching the baby in the doctor’s hands.
Once the baby was wrapped, she quickly held it. Seeing the fair little face, she was overjoyed.
Weakly, Gu Yihan asked, “Grandma… is it a boy or a girl?”
Grandma Gu hesitated, glancing at the doctor who had assisted with the birth and had now moved to another patient.
She awkwardly smiled: “Grandma… forgot to ask in the excitement.”
At that moment, a nurse approached Grandma Gu and said with a smile, “Let me take the baby to weigh it.”
Grandma Gu immediately stepped back several paces, still holding the baby, and refused: “No need. We’ll weigh the baby at home ourselves.”
The nurse frowned: “If you’re worried, you can come along.”
Grandma Gu became even more vigilant. She had already said no weighing—why was this person insisting?
Impatiently, she said, “Don’t you understand? I said no!”
Gu Yihan hadn’t even seen the baby yet. Her heart pounded—something felt off.
She looked at the nurse and then at Nurse Shi holding the baby.
Immediately, she refused: “Grandma, no weighing. Let’s go home.”
