In Family Compound, On her way back from the family vegetable plot, Battalion Commander Wen’s wife, Wang Erya, happened to run into Gu Yihan, who was riding her bicycle home.

She smiled and raised an arm to greet her. “Commander Lu’s wife!”

Seeing Wang Erya, Gu Yihan stopped her bike and glanced at the farming tools in her hand.

Smiling, she asked, “Sister Wang, did you just go to turn the soil?”

Gu Yihan had a very good impression of Wang Erya’s family. Last time, Wang Erya had even lent her rain gear.

Grandma Gu also liked chatting with Battalion Commander Wen’s mother, talking about little stories from the compound.

Every time Wang Erya heard Gu Yihan call her “Sister Wang,” she felt especially happy.

Among military wives who were close, they usually addressed each other as “sister-in-law” or “younger sister-in-law” based on their husbands’ ranks. It was rare to be called by surname.

Wang Erya smiled and nodded. Since Gu Yihan treated her so warmly, she naturally responded in kind.

She said affectionately, “Xiao Han, a woman came to the compound today saying she’s your older sister.”

Gu Yihan froze. “Older sister?”

Wang Erya nodded repeatedly. “She doesn’t look anything like you. And she seems… a bit mentally unstable.”

Gu Yihan thought for a while but couldn’t figure out who it might be. All her cousins from Gujia Village and Gu Meng were already married—they wouldn’t come looking for her.

And hearing that the woman was “not quite normal” made her even more confused.

After a moment, she replied, “I don’t have an older sister.”

Wang Erya let out a breath of relief. She had been worried it might really be Gu Yihan’s sister.

Then she glanced at Gu Yihan’s protruding belly and said worriedly, “You’re pregnant. If you run into someone like that, stay far away.”

Hearing her concern, Gu Yihan smiled. “Thank you, Sister Wang.”

After saying goodbye, Wang Erya carried her tools and headed home.

When Gu Yihan returned home, she was surprised to see Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s mother sitting in the courtyard. It was the first time the old woman had come by.

Seeing Gu Yihan, she smiled broadly. “Xiao Han, you’re back.”

Gu Yihan nodded and smiled in response.

Hearing her voice, Grandma Gu hurried out of the kitchen. “Are you tired today?”

Ever since Gu Yihan’s belly had grown bigger, Grandma Gu had become more attentive, asking her this every day.

Gu Yihan smiled. “I sit in the office all day. I’m not tired.”

Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s mother beamed like a chrysanthemum and chimed in,
“Our Xiao Han is really capable—she earns money.”

“Unlike my daughter-in-law. All she knows is cooking and serving me at home.”

Gu Yihan: “……”

Grandma Gu shot her a glare and said irritably, “That’s because you have good taste. You married a filial daughter-in-law who won’t let you do anything.”

After parking her bike, Gu Yihan went straight to the living room and sat on the sofa to rest.

Soon, Grandma Gu came in and sat beside her. “Are you hungry? Shall we wait for Xiao Lu to eat together?”

Gu Yihan nodded, then asked, “Has Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s mother left?”

Grandma Gu smiled. “Her daughter-in-law is gentle and obedient. She does whatever she’s told.”

Gu Yihan didn’t think much of it. With such a domineering mother-in-law, it was natural to choose a submissive daughter-in-law.

Otherwise, two strong personalities together would mean constant fighting.

“Grandma, Sister Wang said someone came today pretending to be my sister,” Gu Yihan said, laughing at herself.

Grandma Gu’s expression stiffened. She tightened her grip on her granddaughter’s hand.

Seeing this, Gu Yihan felt uneasy. “Grandma… who was it?”

Grandma Gu didn’t dare look her in the eye. She knew she shouldn’t hide it and said softly, “It was Gu Meng. She came once before. I didn’t want you to be upset, so I didn’t tell you. I gave her money for a ticket and sent her away.”

Gu Yihan said nothing, but she felt uncomfortable.

Even after Grandma Gu came to live here, Gu Yihan still sent her money and coupons every month so she could spend freely.

She didn’t mind the money being used on Grandma Gu at all.

But if it went to Gu Meng, she wouldn’t even want to give a single cent.

Seeing her silent, Grandma Gu thought she was angry and hurriedly explained everything—about Gu Meng’s divorce and her desire to stay in Kun City.

Then she added, “This time I didn’t give her anything. I told her not to come again.”

Gu Yihan adjusted her mood and smiled. “Grandma, don’t meet Gu Meng again. I’m afraid she might lose control and hurt you.”

Grandma Gu looked at her seriously. “Xiao Han, I promise. From now on, I’ll tell you everything. I won’t hide things anymore.”

The room fell silent.

Neither of them mentioned Gu Meng again, until Lu Huailin’s voice broke the quiet.

“Wife… wife.”

Grandma Gu glanced at him, smiled, and went into the kitchen.

After greeting her, Lu Huailin plopped down beside Gu Yihan.

He cupped her face and kissed her loudly. “Wife, good news!”

Gu Yihan was in slightly better spirits now. She glanced at him sideways. “What good news?”

Lu Huailin wrapped an arm around her and said softly, “Your factory’s new production line will hire many military wives.”

Gu Yihan was speechless. How was that good news for her?

Sensing her thoughts, Lu Huailin sighed. “Because of you, three wives from our regiment can go work at the textile factory.”

Gu Yihan replied casually, “That’s good.”

She checked the time. Grandma Gu had been in the kitchen for a while. Worried she might be overthinking, Gu Yihan stood up—but Lu Huailin pulled her back.

“Wife, what do you need? I’ll get it.”

“I’ll go check on Grandma,” she said.

Lu Huailin then realized it too. He gently pressed her back onto the sofa.

“I’ll go.”

He walked toward the kitchen.

Grandma Gu was boiling dumplings while wiping away tears, feeling that she had upset her granddaughter.

When Lu Huailin entered and saw her crying, he thought someone had bullied her.

With a dark expression, he asked, “Grandma, who bullied you?”

Startled, Grandma Gu hurriedly wiped her face. “No one. Something got in my eye.”

Seeing she didn’t want to talk, Lu Huailin didn’t press further and quietly began helping in the kitchen.
