Secretary Jiang and Hu Shan spent the entire morning wiping down the table in the corner.
Secretary Jiang carefully placed the typewriter on the desk, took out a handkerchief from his pocket, and gently wiped it again.
When Gu Yihan saw his movements, the corner of her eye twitched involuntarily.
Secretary Jiang looked at Hu Shan seriously and instructed her, “Comrade Hu, maintaining the typewriter will be your responsibility from now on. It wasn’t easy for our factory to get this. You must be careful when using it.”
Seeing how cautiously they treated the machine, Sister Min and Su Yonghong subconsciously lowered their breathing.
After Secretary Jiang left, Sister Min and Su Yonghong stood up as if they had agreed beforehand and walked over to examine the typewriter.
After studying the letters on it for a while, Sister Min asked Hu Shan in a low voice, “Aren’t there too few pinyin letters?”
Hu Shan couldn’t help laughing and patiently explained, “Those are English letters, not pinyin.”
Realizing she had made a fool of herself, Sister Min smiled awkwardly and returned to her seat.
Seeing Gu Yihan sitting there reading the newspaper, Hu Shan smiled and asked, “Xiao Han, do you want to take a look at the typewriter?”
Hearing Hu Shan call her, Gu Yihan raised her eyes, glanced at her, and smiled as she declined. “Thanks, Sister Shan, but I won’t.”
She had seen far more advanced things than a typewriter before. What was rare to others was nothing more than an antique in her eyes.
…
When Grandma Gu heard from the guard that a young woman was looking for her at the family compound gate, she knew it must be her granddaughter, Gu Meng.
She locked the courtyard gate and walked straight toward the entrance.
When Gu Meng saw Grandma Gu, she hurried over, grabbed her sleeve, and sobbed, “Grandma, you have to save me.”
Grandma Gu expressionlessly pulled her sleeve back. What nonsense—asking for help the moment she showed up.
She glared at Gu Meng and said impatiently, “I can’t help you. You have parents. Go find them.”
Thinking of Chen Xiu and Gu Aidang, Gu Meng couldn’t suppress the hatred in her eyes.
With reddened eyes, she said, “Grandma, my dad wants to sell me off and marry me to an old bachelor.”
She had only managed to escape by tricking her way into getting an introduction letter.
No matter what, she had to find a way to stay in Kun City. At least here, Grandma Gu and Gu Yihan could look out for her.
Hearing this, Grandma Gu frowned and asked in confusion, “Aren’t you already married? Why would they make you marry again?”
Thinking of that useless man who couldn’t even say a word properly, Gu Meng felt even more resentful.
After seeing how well Grandma Gu was living now, how could she be willing to go back to such a pathetic life?
Seeing Gu Meng’s evasive gaze, Grandma Gu questioned coldly, “Were you the one who wanted a divorce?”
Gu Meng became unhappy. “Grandma, after I went back last time, that man ignored me completely.”
Recalling Gu Meng’s last visit, Grandma Gu felt angry again. This granddaughter had been raised crooked.
“Don’t bring up last time. Didn’t I tell you not to come looking for me anymore?”
Gu Meng burned with resentment. Why could Gu Yihan support Grandma Gu, but she couldn’t?
“Grandma, I’m not leaving Kun City this time. Find me a place to stay.”
Grandma Gu was so angry at her shameless words that she laughed instead.
“I’m not your grandma. Don’t come looking for me again.”
With that, she turned and walked back toward the compound.
Seeing that Grandma Gu was really leaving her alone, Gu Meng panicked and rushed forward to grab her arm.
Crying, she shouted, “Grandma, you can’t just live a good life and abandon your granddaughter!”
Grandma Gu wasn’t fooled at all. She sneered, “Give it up. I know you too well. Who knows what bad schemes you’re cooking up.”
Seeing that persuasion didn’t work, Gu Meng dropped the act. “I’m Gu Yihan’s sister. Why won’t she take care of me?”
Grandma Gu glanced at her and snorted. “Xiao Han isn’t your sister. You’ve got the wrong person.”
She forcefully pulled her arm free and turned back into the compound.
Gu Meng hurried after her, trying to follow inside, but was stopped by the guards.
“Why can she go in and I can’t?” Gu Meng yelled at them.
The two guards straightened up and said expressionlessly, “Grandma Gu is a military family dependent.”
Gu Meng went crazy with anger. “If she is, then so am I! I’m her biological granddaughter!”
She tried to rush inside, and the guards had no choice but to block her with their arms.
Her eyes flashed as she deliberately threw herself toward them.
The two guards awkwardly restrained her, afraid of touching her too much and being falsely accused.
At that moment, Wang Erya, the wife of Battalion Commander Wen, returned from the city and saw what was happening.
She immediately stepped forward, grabbed Gu Meng’s arm, and flung her aside, sneering, “Where did this crazy woman come from? So shameless, throwing herself at men.”
The guards smiled gratefully at Wang Erya. After hearing her words, their faces instantly turned red.
Gu Meng glared at her. “Who are you? Why are you meddling?”
Wang Erya, who came from the countryside, was never afraid of arguments.
She looked Gu Meng up and down—her gray clothes were faded, and her knees had more than one patch.
She snorted. “This is a military family compound. If you’re sick, go see a doctor. Don’t make a scene here.”
Gu Meng stared at her fiercely and ground her teeth. “I’m Gu Yihan’s sister. If you offend me, she won’t let you off!”
Wang Erya stared at her in disbelief.
Thinking she had scared her, Gu Meng lifted her chin proudly.
Wang Erya turned to the guards and said skeptically, “Where did this crazy woman come from? She must be out of her mind.”
The guards felt extremely awkward. Since Grandma Gu hadn’t acknowledged her, she was clearly a stranger.
Gu Meng tried to take advantage of their distraction and dash inside.
Wang Erya reacted quickly, grabbed her arm, and shoved her back out without hesitation.
Staggering, Gu Meng shouted, “I’m Gu Yihan—”
“Shut up.” Wang Erya cut her off impatiently.
“With a face like yours, how could you be Gu Yihan’s sister? You look more like a spy.”
She pointed at the guards’ waists and threatened, “They’re authorized to shoot spies on the spot.”
Gu Meng followed her gaze and turned pale instantly.
Her lips trembled. “I really am Gu Yihan’s sister…”
Seeing that she was finally scared, Wang Erya snorted.
“Anyone can run up to the army and claim to be someone’s sister. If that were allowed, this place would turn into a spy nest.”
With that, she walked past Gu Meng and returned to the compound.
