Early the next morning, She wasn’t sure if it was just psychological, but the foot massage for pregnant women really did seem to help with sleep. When she opened her eyes, the sky was already bright.
Humming a cheerful tune, she got up, washed up, and sat at the table to drink her porridge.
Grandma Gu looked at her little granddaughter, who was in such a good mood so early in the morning, and asked in confusion, “Did you pick up money overnight or something?”
Gu Yihan put the peeled egg into her bowl and smiled sweetly at her grandma. “Grandma, it’s even better than picking up money.”
How could she not be happy? Money was the source of happiness.
Not counting the small change at home, before marriage, the two bankbooks Lu Huailin gave her had a total of nineteen thousand yuan. Yesterday, Father Lu gave her another ten thousand.
Not even counting the two thousand in the box from Mother Lu, she was already a little rich woman now.
Grandma Gu didn’t ask why she was so happy. She brought over the boiled milk and placed it in front of her. “Xiao Lu ordered this milk. He said everyone should have one cup every morning.”
Gu Yihan happily said sweetly, “Thank you, Grandma.”
Grandma Gu nagged, “Xiao Lu went to the army early this morning. Before leaving, he even told me to supervise you and make sure you eat breakfast properly.”
Gu Yihan replied with a soft “Mm,” picked up the milk, and drank it all in one go. “I know, Grandma.”
After breakfast, she cheerfully pushed her bicycle out the door.
When Gu Yihan pushed open the door, she saw that Sister Min and Sister Su were already there. After greeting them, she walked lightly to her seat.
She took out her pen and began calculating her idle savings at home. When she had time off, she planned to go to the city and deposit it.
“Xiao Han, do you think you could…”
Before Su Yonghong could finish, Gu Yihan cut her off. “No.”
She put down her pen, raised her head, and looked straight at Su Yonghong, her voice cold.
“Sister Su, your daughter’s marriage is not my responsibility. Helping you is kindness. Not helping you is my right. Since I’ve already refused, I hope you won’t bring up such unreasonable requests again.”
Su Yonghong’s face turned red. Because Gu Yihan was a military wife, she didn’t dare offend her and instead looked toward Sister Min.
Sister Min glanced at Su Yonghong with ridicule and thought, She really treats others like suckers.
“Was it you who badmouthed me in front of Xiao Han?” Su Yonghong glared at Sister Min angrily, her eyes red.
Sister Min was so angry she almost laughed. This bully-the-weak type really thought she was easy to mess with.
She sneered, “Su Yonghong, don’t act like a mad dog, biting everyone you see.”
Gu Yihan watched as the two started arguing back and forth in rhythm.
She took out a newspaper, reading while watching them quarrel to pass the time.
It wasn’t until mealtime that they finally stopped.
Sister Min walked over. “Xiao Han, let’s go eat.”
Gu Yihan took her lunchbox and walked beside her toward the cafeteria.
“Xiao Han, you mustn’t be soft-hearted,” Sister Min warned. “You don’t know since you live in the military compound. Their family’s reputation is already ruined because of this matter.”
Gu Yihan didn’t want to comment on Su Yonghong. She secretly thought: if she casually echoed something now, and those two made up someday, she might end up being sold out.
Seeing her silent, Sister Min patted her arm. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Gu Yihan looked embarrassed. “Sorry, Sister Min. I’m pregnant, and I just felt a little uncomfortable.”
Sister Min looked at her still-flat belly in surprise. “Xiao Han, you’re pregnant? I couldn’t even tell.”
Seeing her attention diverted, Gu Yihan secretly sighed in relief. As long as it didn’t involve her own interests, she didn’t want to judge Su Yonghong.
She tugged at her padded jacket and smiled. “I’m wearing thick clothes, that’s why.”
Soon, they entered the cafeteria and lined up for food. Since she had eaten a lot in the morning, she wasn’t very hungry. She ordered a bowl of tofu soup and one steamed bun.
After sitting down, Sister Min looked at her lunchbox. “Why are you eating so little?”
Gu Yihan smiled. “I’m not very hungry. This is enough.”
After lunch, on the way back, Sister Min asked softly, “Xiao Han, do you hope your baby will be a boy or a girl?”
Gu Yihan glanced at her. Thinking of the baby in her belly, her eyes filled with gentle warmth.
“I like girls.”
Sister Min stared at her in shock. “You actually like girls? Don’t people usually hope their first child is a boy? That way you can secure your position in your husband’s family.”
Gu Yihan laughed and shook her head. “Girls are great. They can wear all kinds of pretty dresses and tie beautiful hairstyles. Boys only wear black, gray, and blue. They’re ugly to death.”
Sister Min was stunned, thinking Gu Yihan’s brain must be wired differently.
Who liked girls just because they could wear pretty clothes? Although she herself wasn’t biased against daughters, that was only because she already had a son.
Gu Yihan didn’t care what she thought. Girls were wonderful—cute, sweet, obedient when young, and a mother’s little padded jacket when grown.
Boys were troublesome as kids, and when they grew up, they’d sprout wings and fly away, forgetting even to call home.
Back in the accounting office, Su Yonghong was already sitting in her seat. Sister Min shot her a glance, snorted, and returned to her own desk.
The whole afternoon, the office atmosphere was stifling. Finally, it was time to get off work.
After becoming pregnant, Gu Yihan was very careful. She always walked slowly and unhurriedly. By the time she reached the bicycle parking area, only a few bikes were left.
“Xiao Han?”
Without turning around, she knew it was Qiao Shuhui. She didn’t want to deal with her and pushed her bike forward.
Qiao Shuhui quickly walked in front of her. “A couple of days ago, I saw your grandma giving money and coupons to a woman.”
Gu Yihan looked up at her in surprise. Qiao Shuhui’s face was swollen and yellowish, and her belly was frighteningly big.
Qiao Shuhui smiled. “I’m not trying to cause trouble. I just can’t bear to see you being kept in the dark.”
Although she looked pitiful and haggard while pregnant, Gu Yihan felt no sympathy. Everything Qiao Shuhui had done before was still vivid in her mind.
She replied perfunctorily, “Comrade Qiao, thank you for telling me.”
Then she pushed her bike past her.
Watching Gu Yihan’s back, Qiao Shuhui couldn’t help feeling both envious and jealous.
They were both pregnant, yet their complexion and figures were completely different.
