On the way back, Lu Huailin pedaled his bicycle while asking worriedly, “Wife, are the people in your department easy to get along with?”
Gu Yihan answered absentmindedly, “It doesn’t matter whether they’re easy to deal with or not. The money and coupons I get aren’t theirs anyway.”
Lu Huailin laughed when he heard that. His wife really had a big heart—she didn’t care about other people’s attitudes at all. With a low chuckle, he said, “You’re right, wife.”
Just as the bicycle entered the family compound—
“Commander Lu!”
Hearing the call, Lu Huailin stopped and looked toward the signal soldier, Xiao Zhang, who was walking toward him carrying a package.
After the bicycle stopped, Gu Yihan quickly jumped down, stepping onto the ground and letting out a breath of relief. Even though there was a thick cushion tied to the back seat, sitting there with her legs dangling still made her feel insecure.
Xiao Zhang walked over with the package. When he saw Gu Yihan behind Lu Huailin, he guessed that this beautiful young woman must be the commander’s wife and took the initiative to greet her.
“Hello, Sister-in-law.”
A smile appeared on Gu Yihan’s face as she glanced at Lu Huailin.
Sensing her look, Lu Huailin hurriedly introduced him. “Wife, this is Signalman Zhang Hao. You can call him Xiao Zhang.”
Only then did Gu Yihan smile and reply, “Hello, Xiao Zhang.”
Feeling a little shy, Xiao Zhang scratched his head. It was his first time seeing the commander’s wife.
He quickly handed over the luggage and letters in his hands.
“Commander, these are your package and letters. They were mailed from Beijing.”
Hearing that they were sent from Beijing, Lu Huailin had a guess in his heart. He took the package.
After that, Xiao Zhang glanced at Gu Yihan and said politely, “Commander, Sister-in-law, I’ll be going now.”
With that, he turned and jogged toward the entrance of the compound.
Lu Huailin put the package into the bike basket and said softly, “It should be from Dad.”
Although Gu Yihan felt puzzled, she didn’t ask. The two of them walked home side by side.
In the Courtyard, Grandma Gu was feeding the hens, calling “cluck, cluck, cluck” as she tossed out grain. These hens were her “little savings bank”—they laid eggs diligently.
Hearing the creak of the door, she knew the young couple had returned. She dusted off her hands and turned to them with a smile.
“You’re back. Go wash up and get ready to eat.”
Gu Yihan walked over, naturally took her hand, and said gratefully, “Grandma, thank you.”
Grandma Gu pulled her hand back with a chuckle. “I just fed the chickens. Don’t dirty your hands.”
Gu Yihan stubbornly took her calloused hand again and gently stroked it. “Grandma’s hands aren’t dirty at all. They’re very clean.”
Seeing that her granddaughter didn’t slight her, Grandma Gu’s wrinkled face bloomed with joy.
She had seen many elderly women in the compound being disliked by their families—complained about being dirty or smelly, so much that they didn’t even dare eat at the table and had to squat in the kitchen.
That was why, even when it was cold and bathing was inconvenient, Grandma Gu still boiled water every day to wipe herself clean, afraid her granddaughter would dislike her.
Lu Huailin carried the package into the bedroom, then quickly went to the kitchen and brought out the dinner Grandma Gu had prepared.
Gu Yihan led Grandma Gu into the living room. On the table were pork-and-cabbage stew with vermicelli and cornmeal buns.
She knew that elderly people, like children, loved praise. They wanted to feel useful and valued.
Smiling, she said, “Grandma, every time I come home, there’s hot food waiting. You’ve always been taking care of me.”
As she spoke, she helped Grandma Gu sit in the main seat.
Lu Huailin served a bowl of porridge and placed it in front of her.
“Grandma, Xiaohan is right. We’re both young. After she got pregnant, we’ve really depended on you. When the baby’s born, we’ll still need you to teach her how to take care of it.”
Grandma Gu was overjoyed by the praise. “Alright, alright, stop flattering me. Eat quickly.”
The family finished dinner happily. Before Grandma Gu could stand up to clean, Lu Huailin efficiently began clearing the dishes.
Watching him bustle about, Grandma Gu patted Gu Yihan’s hand and whispered, “Xiao Lu is diligent. He sees work and does it. He even washes his own clothes—much better than those who won’t even pick up a fallen oil bottle.”
Gu Yihan glanced at Lu Huailin cleaning the living room and whispered in Grandma Gu’s ear,
“Grandma, tell me the truth—how many benefits did he give you?”
Grandma Gu froze for a moment, then burst out laughing. “Nonsense. Between you and Xiao Lu, Grandma is definitely on your side.”
Gu Yihan looked at her with obvious disbelief.
Grandma Gu laughed and lightly slapped her arm. “Alright, I’m going to rest.”
After Grandma Gu left the living room, Lu Huailin came in carrying a basin and placed it at Gu Yihan’s feet.
“Wife, today I’ll wash your feet.”
Gu Yihan looked at the basin, then up and down at him. Alarm bells rang in her heart. No one was this attentive without a reason.
“Are you hiding something from me?”
Lu Huailin was confused. “No, wife, I’m not.”
Her gaze fell on the basin. “Then what is this?”
He explained quickly, “Your belly is getting bigger. I asked the doctor—bending over to wash your feet can press on it. So when I’m not on duty, I’ll wash your feet and massage them. It’ll make you feel more comfortable.”
“Oh.” Only then did Gu Yihan relax. She just wasn’t used to being served so attentively.
After finishing the massage, Lu Huailin didn’t even let her put on her shoes. He directly picked her up, carried her to the bedroom, and placed her on the bed.
Sitting there, Gu Yihan looked at the package on the dresser and pointed at it.
“You haven’t opened it?”
Lu Huailin went over, opened the letters, and read for a while. Then he took out a remittance slip and handed it to her.
“This is from Dad. For you.”
Gu Yihan took it doubtfully. After looking at it, her eyes widened. She raised her head in disbelief.
“Why is it so much money?”
Lu Huailin opened the package. Inside were malted milk powder, baby formula, and a Rolex ladies’ watch.
“Not much. Just ten thousand.”
Gu Yihan looked at the remittance slip and sighed. “That’s still not much? Isn’t it risky to mail this to the army?”
He handed her the watch. “Dad earns over 400 a month. This is just about two years’ salary. No problem.”
Gu Yihan examined the watch carefully. “I saw this at the Friendship Store in Beijing last time. It costs 765 yuan.”
She looked up at him. “Why did your dad send so many things?”
Lu Huailin walked over and gently held her in his arms.
“He knows you’ve been wronged. This is his compensation to you.”
Gu Yihan hummed in response and didn’t ask further.
Although she didn’t know what Father Lu was thinking, seeing these tangible things made her feel much better.
