When Mother Lu returned home with Miaomiao in a huff, Fang Yi was sitting on the sofa, pressing a cool towel against her cheeks.

Just as she was about to question her, she looked down and saw Miaomiao’s clear eyes staring at her with curiosity. Her anger subsided.

With a gentle smile, she said to her little granddaughter, “Miaomiao, why don’t you go play in your room for a while? Grandma needs to talk to your mom.”

Miaomiao blinked her round eyes, glanced at Mother Lu, and then at Fang Yi on the sofa.

Obediently, she nodded, waddled up the stairs using the railing, and went upstairs by herself.

Mother Lu smiled as she watched Miaomiao disappear upstairs until she could no longer see her.

Then she turned and fixed her gaze on the oblivious Fang Yi.

Fang Yi looked up and met Mother Lu’s gaze but didn’t take her attitude seriously—after all, the “jinx” who had started all this trouble, Gu Yihan, had already left.

Here in Jing City, it was just the three of them with Mother Lu, and Lu Huailin and his wife probably wouldn’t return to Jing for years.

Lu’s parents wouldn’t completely cut ties with their family of three, which made Fang Yi fearless.

She removed the towel from her face, pointed at her cheeks, and complained, “Mom, look at my face—it’s all swollen from my sister-in-law hitting me.”

Mother Lu hummed in acknowledgment, then said, “I bought something and left it at the door. Come with me to get it.”

Fang Yi looked at her mother in confusion. “Mom, what did you buy?”

Mother Lu snapped, “Why ask so many questions? Just come with me.”

With that, she hurried over, grabbed Fang Yi’s arm, and pulled her toward the door.

At the small courtyard gate, Mother Lu glanced at her eldest daughter-in-law beside her. Seizing an unguarded moment, she pushed hard against Fang Yi’s back, sending her sprawling outside.

“Bang.”

She slammed the wooden door shut, locked it, and shouted through the door, “Fang Yi, don’t ever set foot in my house again!”

Fang Yi, sprawled on the ground, was stunned. She couldn’t understand what had possessed Mother Lu to act so irrationally, ejecting her without rhyme or reason.

“Knock, knock, knock.”

Leng Xiao heard the knocking, opened the door, and froze for a moment when he saw Lu Huailin carrying luggage with Gu Yihan beside him.

He immediately guessed that something must have happened at home.

He hurriedly took the luggage from Lu Huailin’s hands and asked in confusion, “Brother Lu, what’s going on?”

Lu Huailin and Leng Xiao had grown up together and were close.

He didn’t hide anything—he told Leng Xiao about Fang Yi’s attitude toward Gu Yihan during this visit to Jing City, as well as Big Brother Lu’s attitude.

Leng Xiao listened, dumbfounded, feeling deeply sympathetic.

In the living room, Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin sat on the sofa while Leng Xiao poured two cups of water on the wooden coffee table.

He sat on the opposite sofa and finally spoke, “I really didn’t expect so many things to happen in your family.”

Leng Xiao had a good impression of Gu Yihan. Just the fact that she had turned over the little hamster so faithfully said a lot.

Although she wasn’t very shrewd, and even a bit naive, she was certainly not malicious.

He looked at Lu Huailin and offered some advice, “Brother Lu, you should still keep in frequent contact with your family and nurture your relationship.”

Gu Yihan paused mid-sip, unsure why Leng Xiao was saying this.

Lu Huailin understood his meaning: even strangers grow a little attachment from frequent contact, let alone his elder brother’s family, who regularly saw Mother Lu.

Seeing Lu Huailin frown in silence, Leng Xiao sighed and said, “Even siblings aren’t the same, not to mention a son who’s away most of the time?”

“I won’t speak for Father Lu, but Mother Lu definitely favors the son who’s often around. Even if, as you say, they were angry enough to send Big Brother Lu away, over time, the elders’ hearts will soften. They’ll forgive the mistakes eventually.”

Leng Xiao glanced at Gu Yihan sitting silently on the sofa.

He didn’t hold back: “Besides, nothing serious has happened to you, so in the eyes of Father Lu and Mother Lu, it’s probably just petty squabbles between women.”

Gu Yihan set the cup down on the table, turned, and looked directly at Lu Huailin. “I will not forgive your eldest sister-in-law. Unless in the future you get transferred here and I follow you to settle down, I will not return to Jing City.”

Before Lu Huailin could reply, Leng Xiao couldn’t help but laugh, “Sister-in-law, still a bit childish, huh? No family’s sisters-in-law are fully united. They smile in front of each other but don’t get along in heart. One day they fight bitterly, the next day they greet each other happily. If everyone held grudges like you, how many families with multiple sons could survive? Just because daughters-in-law don’t get along, would that make them deny their parents or siblings?”

Gu Yihan didn’t argue with Leng Xiao. She wasn’t close to him, and there was no need for him to fully understand.

Others might be able to keep up appearances and coexist despite differences, but Gu Yihan knew herself too well.

She was selfish, her heart wasn’t big, and she didn’t care about many people. She wouldn’t compromise for those who didn’t matter.

Lu Huailin, however, couldn’t smile. He knew she meant what she said. Just as he reached to hold her hand, Gu Yihan dodged.

Startled, Lu Huailin stared at his empty hand, his heart tightening. Ignoring Leng Xiao, he pulled her into a hug. “Fine, if my wife doesn’t want to go back, then we won’t.”

Gu Yihan nodded perfunctorily. She held no goodwill toward the Lu family anymore and even regretted marrying Lu Huailin.

They had spent a whole day and night on the train.

Until they returned to the Kun City military district, Gu Yihan hadn’t said a single word to Lu Huailin.

At the Small Courtyard, Grandma Gu was overjoyed to see her little granddaughter back and fussed over her, asking, “Xiaohan, are you hungry? Grandma made dumplings, just waiting for you to come home to eat.”

Gu Yihan held her grandmother’s hand, feeling tender. “I’m not hungry. Have you been busy at home again?”

Grandma Gu reached out, caressing her granddaughter’s cheeks, and complained, “How come you lost weight after just visiting your in-laws?”

Lu Huailin had just put down the luggage and overheard Grandma Gu. He carefully examined Gu Yihan’s face and relaxed seeing her healthy complexion.

Gu Yihan enjoyed her grandmother’s care, wrapping her arms around her and acting spoiled, “Grandma, it’s because I missed you.”

Grandma Gu shot her a look. “If you’re not hungry, I’ll go back to my room first. You’ve been on the road for so long—rest well.”

Once Grandma Gu left, Lu Huailin cautiously moved closer to Gu Yihan and whispered, “Wife, if you have an issue with me, can you tell me? You ignore me and won’t talk to me, so I have no idea what’s on your mind.”

Gu Yihan glared at him, said nothing, and went straight to her bedroom to rest.
