Time flew by.
Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin had bought train tickets for the 7 PM train back to Kun City that evening.
In the bedroom, Mother Lu sat on the bed, sighing as she held Gu Yihan’s hand. She felt reluctant—Yihan hadn’t even stayed a few days, and she was already leaving.
In a few months, her younger daughter-in-law would give birth. The baby would be small, and the couple wouldn’t be able to return to the capital for several years.
She hadn’t retired either, so she could only hope to visit when she had some free time.
She carefully reminded, “The down quilt, bed sheets, and the sweater I knitted for you that you bought at the Friendship Store… tomorrow I’ll go to the post office and send them to Kun City for you.”
Gu Yihan smiled, appreciating Mother Lu’s kindness. During Yihan’s stay—since she hadn’t been back to Lu’s home often—their relationship had been pleasant.
Except for the times when Miao Miao cried for her mother and Lu Huaixu patiently comforted her, Mother Lu would silently watch, her heart aching.
Gu Yihan thought that if the couple didn’t return to the capital, family conflicts might not erupt so quickly.
Mother Lu looked worriedly at Yihan’s belly. She had no time to help her with postpartum care, so she could only make up for it in other ways.
“I’ll save the cloth coupons and milk powder here. Once they’re ready, I’ll send them all to you together. All the heavy work at home—don’t do it. Let Huailin handle it. You just focus on taking care of yourself.”
Gu Yihan pulled her thoughts back and listened patiently. She hadn’t given birth before, but common sense told her what she needed to know.
She wasn’t worried about her own health—she had been drinking water from the space for years. Her only concern was the baby; at this stage, there were many cases of babies being switched or held incorrectly.
Lu Huailin was packing his personal items. Hearing his mother’s chatter, he chuckled softly. “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of my wife.”
Mother Lu shot him a sharp look. “You men are never that meticulous,” she said, half amused, half exasperated.
In the living room, Little Miao Miao was lying on the sofa, flipping through a comic book.
“Miao Miao.”
Hearing someone call her name, she tilted her head, listening carefully. It was Fang Yi’s voice. Her eyes lit up.
She jumped off the sofa and ran out with her little legs.
Through the door crack, Miao Miao’s round eyes looked at Fang Yi, and she joyfully shouted, “Mommy!”
Fang Yi stood outside the door and quietly asked, “Miao Miao, is grandma home?”
Miao Miao tiptoed and stretched her little arms, trying to slide the door latch open. Her strength was too weak, and after struggling for a while, it hadn’t budged.
She pouted, her eyes red, still answering Fang Yi: “Mom, grandma is talking to auntie.”
Pointing at the door, she complained, “The door won’t open.”
Seeing Miao Miao’s red, tearful face, Fang Yi’s heart ached. She soothed her softly, “It’s okay, if it won’t open, it won’t open. Mommy just misses you and wants to see you.”
Little Miao Miao’s tears fell drop by drop. Poor thing—she hadn’t seen her mother for several days. At night, no one had told her a bedtime story or cuddled her to sleep.
Quietly sobbing, she told Fang Yi outside the door, “Mommy, wait for me.”
Then she ran back into the living room, but couldn’t find anything suitable to stand on.
She went to the kitchen, took the little stool Aunt He usually used for picking vegetables, and carried it back, wobbling as she went.
Standing on the stool, she pushed the door latch with both hands with all her might. Finally, it moved. She was overjoyed.
Once Miao Miao moved the stool, Fang Yi opened the door, bent down, and picked her up. She kissed her soft little face and whispered, “Miao Miao, did you miss Mommy?”
Miao Miao rested her head on Fang Yi’s shoulder, softly saying, “Yes, Miao Miao missed Mommy so much.”
Fang Yi carried Miao Miao into the living room and sat on the sofa.
“Mommy has a plan for you, okay?”
Miao Miao lifted her head, blinked her big eyes at Fang Yi, curious. “What plan?”
Fang Yi stroked her daughter’s cheek, thinking over the past few days. Since she hadn’t gained anything from the family separation, why should she have split the household?
With Aunt He cooking in the military compound and no need to pay living expenses, whether she could stay depended on Miao Miao.
“Later, when you see your auntie, Miao Miao, you’ll hug her legs and cry, asking her to let Mommy stay, okay?”
Miao Miao was too young to understand adults’ indirect ways. She didn’t understand why Mommy wanted her to hug Auntie’s legs and cry.
Her little body wriggled continuously in protest, murmuring, “I won’t hug.”
Seeing Miao Miao disobedient, Fang Yi’s face darkened. She placed her on the sofa and, with a serious tone, glared at her, warning, “If you don’t listen to Mommy, you’ll never see Mommy again.”
Miao Miao froze, frightened by Fang Yi’s eyes.
Seeing Miao Miao still distracted, Fang Yi angrily gave her a slap on the bottom.
Since it was winter, Miao Miao was dressed warmly. It didn’t hurt, but it scared her.
Her little mouth opened: “Wah…” and she cried.
Upstairs, Mother Lu, hearing Miao Miao’s cries, was startled and immediately went downstairs.
Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin exchanged a glance and quickly followed, one after the other.
Just as they arrived in the living room, they saw Fang Yi holding the crying Miao Miao, softly soothing her.
Seeing Gu Yihan come down as well, Mother Lu’s face stiffened. She now realized the two daughters-in-law probably didn’t get along.
Fang Yi gently patted Miao Miao’s back, and upon seeing Gu Yihan, she smiled at her as if no unpleasantness had ever occurred.
“Sorry, sister-in-law. Really, my sister-in-law is just too petty.”
Gu Yihan gave her a cold look and said nothing.
At this moment, Miao Miao struggled in Fang Yi’s arms, remembering what her mother had told her.
The little girl’s feet touched the ground, and she ran crying to Gu Yihan, grabbed her hand, and shouted, “Second Aunt, please let my Mommy go!”
Fang Yi froze, standing stiffly by the sofa, nearly furious to the point of spitting blood. This wasn’t how she had taught her.
In the living room, Gu Yihan, Mother Lu, and Lu Huailin were all stunned by Miao Miao’s words.
Mother Lu glared at Fang Yi, but seeing Miao Miao crying so hard, she felt heartbroken.
Gu Yihan was speechless, feeling incredibly grateful she didn’t live in the capital. She touched the little girl’s face and said, “Auntie is leaving today.”
The implication was clear: whether Fang Yi stayed or not was no concern of hers.
This matter related to Lu’s parents. Gu Yihan had already heard from Lu Huailin that their father had asked the eldest son to move out, effectively splitting the household.
Miao Miao didn’t understand. She couldn’t see how Auntie leaving was connected to whether Mommy could stay. She could only look at Fang Yi.
Fang Yi met her daughter’s innocent gaze, her face extremely awkward.
Seeing Gu Yihan’s half-smile, half-smirk, she blurted out, “I didn’t teach her that.”
