Fang Yi sat on the bed in the bedroom, pretending to read a book.
She waited until 10 p.m., but still no one called her downstairs for dinner.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became—there wasn’t a single person at home who valued her.
Angry, she abruptly stood up, opened the wardrobe, grabbed her bag, and roughly stuffed her clothes inside.
She was ready to return to her parents’ home immediately; she wouldn’t wait another moment.
Brother Lu, exhausted, pushed open the bedroom door. Seeing Fang Yi packing her things, he didn’t ask anything and simply flopped onto the bed.
Fang Yi, seeing that Brother Lu didn’t even question her, became even angrier and more aggrieved, intentionally tossing her clothes around as she packed.
The moment she opened the bedroom door, Brother Lu spoke: “You walk out that door today, don’t come back.”
Fang Yi released the doorknob in disbelief and turned toward him. “What do you mean?”
Brother Lu had never been this tired before: “If you leave today, tomorrow we’ll go to the civil affairs office to file for divorce.”
The luggage in Fang Yi’s hands fell to the floor. She rushed to the bed, tugging at Brother Lu.
“I’ve been married to you for ten years, borne your children, and now you want a divorce? Do you have some other woman on the side? I want to see which little wretch is trying to steal my man.”
Hearing her increasingly hurtful words, Brother Lu sat up.
Grabbing her hand that was trying to pull him, he threw it aside and said coldly: “Look at yourself right now, mouth full of filthy words.”
Fang Yi stumbled back from the force and fell.
Her face turned pale, lips trembling, eyes staring blankly at Brother Lu’s impatient expression.
She couldn’t understand why it was ending in divorce.
She burst into tears, wailing, “Why do you have the right to divorce me?”
Brother Lu got off the bed, paced to her side, and grabbed her chin: “Why are you always targeting sister-in-law?”
Fang Yi froze mid-cry, eyes wide, hoping she’d misheard: “You want a divorce for that woman?”
A flash of disappointment crossed Brother Lu’s eyes as he stood.
Coldly, he said: “Tomorrow’s New Year. Take Miao Miao home. There’s no reason for Lu family children to celebrate the New Year at your Fang family’s house.”
Fang Yi seemed not to hear him, her eyes fixed on Brother Lu as she cried: “You want a divorce because of your sister-in-law?”
Brother Lu completely lost patience and slapped her across the face.
He shouted in a low voice: “What are you going crazy for? What does this have to do with sister-in-law? Whether they buy gifts for the parents has nothing to do with you! Why are you always so aggressive?”
Fang Yi held her stinging face, stunned—she never imagined Brother Lu would hit her.
Then, when he mentioned buying gifts, she began to feel uneasy. Back when she had talked to Mother Lu about it, she really intended to needle Gu Yihan a bit.
Still unaware of the situation, Fang Yi stubbornly defended herself: “Did Mom complain to you? I’m doing it for our parents…”
Brother Lu looked at her sarcastically, cutting her off: “Shut your mouth.”
Seeing Fang Yi lost in her own world and impossible to reason with, he paced the bedroom, filled with suppressed anger.
Seeing her luggage on the floor, he kicked it several times, scattering the clothes everywhere.
Fang Yi had never seen Brother Lu this furious before, too scared to say a word.
After venting, a cold ruthlessness flashed in Brother Lu’s eyes as he glared at her: “If you don’t want a divorce, you’d better learn to keep your mouth shut from now on.”
After saying that, he ignored her, took a blanket from the wardrobe, laid it on the floor, and lay down.
Fang Yi was genuinely terrified now—no matter what, she couldn’t divorce him.
Her parents’ home had treated her with high regard because she married well. If she divorced, all privileges would vanish.
It had taken her so long to earn a little respect; she couldn’t return to being invisible again.
Thinking of the Lu couple, Fang Yi now hated them both.
If Lu Huailin hadn’t married a wife, everything at home should have been hers.
Meanwhile, Lu Huailin held Gu Yihan, quietly soothing her: “Wife, just think of Fang Yi as having farted.”
Gu Yihan was furious: “Did you hear what she just said? That wasn’t human talk! She even pulled me in. I should’ve gone in and slapped her twice. Do you even know who your wife is?”
Gu Yihan hadn’t expected, after using the bathroom, to find Brother Lu’s bedroom door open and hear the quarrel.
She hadn’t paid much attention at first, but overhearing Fang Yi say: ‘You want a divorce for your sister-in-law?’
Her blood boiled—was she implying that Gu Yihan seduced Brother Lu?
Just as she was about to go in, Lu Huailin pulled her back into the bedroom.
He held his wife’s hand and waved it near his face: “Wife, hit me twice to vent, but don’t hurt yourself…It’s my fault. I didn’t hear that crazy woman clearly, otherwise I could’ve slapped her myself without dragging you in.”
Irritated, Gu Yihan pulled her hand free, threw back the covers, climbed into bed, buried her head, and cried.
She hadn’t expected a sister-in-law to be so difficult to deal with. No wonder women decades later didn’t want to get married.
Who wants to be treated this way?
Listening to his wife sobbing, Lu Huailin felt bad too. He picked her up along with the blanket:
“I’m sorry, wife. We won’t come back anymore.”
Perhaps because of pregnancy, her tear glands were overactive.
She couldn’t stop crying, so she let it out, wailing loudly.
If you won’t let me be happy, you won’t be happy either.
Lu Huailin pulled back the blanket, cupped Gu Yihan’s face: “Don’t cry. It’s all my fault. I didn’t hear clearly.”
Gu Yihan turned her head, opened her mouth, and just cried—saying nothing. The whole second floor could hear her sobs.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Mother Lu anxiously stood at the bedroom door, knocking and asking: “Huailin, did you argue with Xiaohan?”
Lu Huailin reluctantly opened the door: “Mom, we didn’t argue.”
Mother Lu pushed him aside and approached the bed, heart aching at Gu Yihan’s red, swollen eyes.
Softly she asked: “Xiaohan, what’s wrong? Tell me. I’ll make it right for you.”
Gu Yihan cried into her mother-in-law’s arms: “Mom, the sister-in-law said Brother Lu wants a divorce because of me. If this spreads, how am I supposed to live?”
Mother Lu’s face turned cold. She patted Gu Yihan’s back gently, gritting her teeth: “That troublemaker. Good child, stop crying. It’s not good for the baby. Mom will handle it for you.”
Gu Yihan stopped crying, tears still on the corner of her eyes, resting her head on Mother Lu’s shoulder: “I knew Mom cares about me the most.”
Lu Huailin twitched at the corner of his eyes watching his wife’s actions.
Mother Lu, however, loved this display, lightly patting her young daughter-in-law’s back.
Gu Yihan, tired from crying, soon fell asleep.
Seeing this, Lu Huailin whispered to Mother Lu: “Mom, my wife is asleep.”
Mother Lu, however, felt accomplished, glared at her youngest son, and scolded: “You can’t even soothe your own wife. You’re useless.”
Lu Huailin: “….”
