The next day, when Gu Yihan got off work and returned to the residential compound, she learned that the entire area was in an uproar.
Several different versions of stories about Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s wife, Lan Cao, were spreading everywhere.
At The Gathering Place for Military Wives’ Gossip, “Auntie Chen, have you heard? Lan Cao had a miscarriage,” whispered Sister Li, the political commissar’s wife.
Auntie Chen didn’t disappoint. She smiled mysteriously. “I know. I also heard she won’t be able to have children anymore.”
The military wives all gasped in unison.
Wen Juan looked at Auntie Chen curiously. “Auntie Chen, who told you that? Isn’t Lan Cao still in the hospital?”
Wang Erya, who had been quietly listening, spoke up. “I heard it too. Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s mother said it.”
Li Xia, Sister Li’s sister-in-law, twitched her lips. “Isn’t that mother-in-law foolish? Family scandals shouldn’t be spread outside.”
Auntie Chen snorted. “Who knows what she’s thinking.”
“She probably wants Lan Cao to back off and stop clinging to Deputy Battalion Commander Wang.”
Gu Yihan was riding her bicycle toward her courtyard when sharp-eyed Auntie Chen spotted her.
“Xiao Han!”
Hearing her name, Gu Yihan looked over and saw Auntie Chen waving her arms wildly among a group of military wives.
She rode over and found that she knew almost everyone there, including the wife who always took sides.
“Xiao Han, do you know? Lan Cao has finally gotten her retribution,” Auntie Chen said mysteriously.
Gu Yihan was startled. Looking at the group, she knew that after finishing their housework, these women spent their time exchanging gossip. Their information spread even faster than the army’s messengers.
She played along and pretended to be curious. “What happened?”
Sister Li blurted out, “What else? She miscarried! The doctor even said she can’t have children anymore!”
That biased military wife snorted. “Serves her right.”
She had witnessed everything by the river the day before. Lan Cao was vicious enough to do bad things openly—who knew what she did in secret?
Gu Yihan felt uncomfortable. She herself was pregnant, so she dared not comment carelessly, afraid of tempting fate.
Besides, doctors wouldn’t casually declare that someone could never get pregnant again.
She quickly changed the subject. “I still have things to do at home. You guys chat. I’m leaving.”
With that, she mounted her bicycle and pedaled away, disappearing in a flash.
The remaining wives looked at each other.
Sister Li sneered. “What’s with her, running off like that?”
“Can’t she tell good intentions from bad? We were standing up for her!”
Li Xia’s heart skipped. She quickly grabbed her sister-in-law’s arm, afraid she’d say something offensive.
Then she smiled at everyone. “Alright, sisters, we’ll be going first.”
Soon, the gossip group dispersed.
In the blink of an eye, several days passed.
Lan Cao was discharged from the hospital and returned to the compound.
She had rested at home for days and planned to return to work on Monday. Although first-grade classes weren’t heavy, she couldn’t take too much leave.
Gu Yihan was lying on a recliner, with Maomao sprawled beside her.
“What? You don’t want me teaching at school anymore?!”
Lan Cao’s shout startled Gu Yihan. Her eyes lit up.
She hurried to the narrow passage beside the kitchen and listened carefully to the conversation in the opposite courtyard.
Lan Cao’s voice rang out again. “Principal Shen, what did I do wrong? Why is the school firing me?”
She couldn’t understand it. She had only taken a few days off. Someone had covered her classes. Why was she being dismissed?
Principal Shen looked at her sternly. “All the students’ parents jointly complained about you.”
“They said your character is flawed, that you’d teach their children to be like you, and that they’re worried about their children’s safety.”
Lan Cao’s face turned pale. Her lips trembled, and she couldn’t speak.
She knew the incident by the river had spread to the school.
With a cold expression, Principal Shen said, “The school made this decision after careful consideration.”
After he left, Lan Cao stood in the yard and burst into tears.
She regretted everything. She shouldn’t have acted on impulse or let jealousy cloud her judgment. Now she had lost both her job and her child.
Inside the living room, Deputy Battalion Commander Wang’s mother glanced at her and snorted. “Serves you right!”
Gu Yihan had heard enough to understand that Lan Cao had been fired.
Her mood instantly improved. She felt thoroughly vindicated.
She wasn’t someone who forgot grudges easily—she remembered everything.
“Maomao, let’s go for a walk! I’m in a great mood today—come with me,” she called happily.
At the word “walk,” Maomao sprang up and ran straight out the gate.
One woman and one dog strolled along, greeting familiar military wives along the way.
When they neared the foot of the mountain, Gu Yihan felt tired and looked for a place to rest.
She sat down on a large stone pier and let Maomao run around freely.
Before long, voices sounded behind her.
“Brother Yifei, our baby can already turn over. Do you want to feel it?”
Gu Yihan froze.
That annoying green-tea catchphrase again—Qiao Shuhui was back in the compound?
She carefully turned sideways, held her breath, and peeked at the two people nearby.
She saw Qiao Shuhui quickly grab Lin Yifei’s hand and press it to her belly.
Blushing, she asked shyly, “Brother Yifei, did you feel it? Our baby moved.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes sparkled.
Was Lin Yifei doing this on purpose? Otherwise, how could he not dodge her hand?
Lin Yifei felt the movement under his palm. He had once looked forward to this child.
Now, his feelings toward the baby in Qiao Shuhui’s womb were complicated. Still, it was his child.
He withdrew his hand coldly. “Go back. Don’t come to the compound for no reason in the future.”
Qiao Shuhui bit her lip hard, suddenly raised her head, rushed forward, kissed Lin Yifei quickly, and ran off.
As she ran, she declared fiercely, “I won’t give up on you! You’re the one I love most in this life!”
Gu Yihan: “……”
