At 11 p.m., Commander Zhang dragged his exhausted body home. He sat down on the wooden sofa and soon fell asleep.
His wife got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and was startled when she saw him sleeping on the sofa.
She went over and patted his arm. “Old Zhang, go back to the bedroom to sleep. You’ll catch a cold out here.”
Commander Zhang opened his eyes groggily and, seeing his wife, muttered, “Did I wake you up?”
Seeing that he still wasn’t fully awake, his wife said irritably, “Hurry up and go to bed. At your age, don’t you know how to take care of yourself?”
This time, Commander Zhang was completely awake. He didn’t mind her nagging.
Thinking of Qi Yanran, he instructed, “Wife, tomorrow go to the arts troupe and arrange a transfer for Yanran.”
“What happened to Yanran? Where are you transferring her?” his wife asked in confusion.
Commander Zhang sat up, sighed, and told her about how Qi Yanran liked Lu Huailin, tried to break up his marriage, and even instigated people to report him.
After hearing this, his wife sighed. “That girl from the Qi family—how did she grow up so crooked? She used to be so innocent and cute.”
Commander Zhang hesitated, then said helplessly, “People change.”
“Especially those without brains. They don’t listen to their family when they say what’s good for them, but they’ll believe whatever outsiders say.”
His wife thought to herself that fortunately, this troublesome person wasn’t from their family. She urged him, “Stop worrying about other people’s kids. Go to bed.”
“She’s not our child anyway. Tomorrow I’ll transfer her to the military arts troupe near the Qiao family and let her parents worry about her.”
The Next Day, Gu Yihan got up early. While cooking porridge, she washed a few eggs and put them into the pot as well.
After finishing his morning exercise, Lu Huailin felt someone watching him on his way back to the courtyard, which immediately put him on alert.
When he got home, he saw that Gu Yihan had already placed the porridge and eggs on the table. After washing up, he sat down beside her.
Gu Yihan pretended to look at him with disdain, lifted her chin proudly, and said, “What are you doing sitting so close to me?”
Lu Huailin smiled, amused by her expression. In a low voice, he chuckled, “You’re my wife. If I don’t sit next to you, who should I sit next to?”
He took a sip of porridge, then suddenly remembered something and reminded her, “From now on, don’t do anything inappropriate outside.”
Gu Yihan turned her face toward his sharp, handsome features. “What’s wrong?”
Lu Huailin picked up an egg, peeled it, and put it into her bowl.
Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, “When I came back this morning, I noticed someone monitoring our courtyard.”
“Because of the hamster incident, even though you’re allowed to go out and work, they’ll keep watching you for a while.”
Gu Yihan froze with her bowl in hand, feeling a surge of panic. She recalled that she hadn’t used her special space much since coming to the compound.
She soon relaxed and said casually, “Let them watch. I don’t have any secrets, and I haven’t done anything harmful to the country.”
Lu Huailin noticed her reaction and knew that even if she did have secrets, she was cautious enough not to leave any traces.
They finished breakfast in silence. Then Gu Yihan pushed her bicycle and left home.
Passing Aunt Chen’s door, she saw her holding her eldest daughter’s son.
“Aunt Chen, your grandson is really handsome,” Gu Yihan praised.
Aunt Chen smiled happily. “Xiao Han, hurry up and go to work. Don’t be late.”
Gu Yihan said goodbye and rode off.
Holding her grandson, Aunt Chen muttered softly, “This Xiao Han is really polite. It’s the first time someone’s been so courteous to me.”
At Textile Factory, After parking her bicycle, Gu Yihan walked cheerfully toward the accounting office.
In her previous life, she liked staying at home, but being forced to stay home and choosing to stay home felt completely different.
When Sister Min and Su Yonghong saw her enter, they asked with concern, “Xiao Han, are you feeling better now?”
Gu Yihan knew that the army had used illness as an excuse to ask for leave on her behalf.
Though it was fake, their concern was genuine.
Touched, she smiled. “Much better. Thank you, Sister Min and Sister Su.”
She sorted through the piled-up work from the past few days. After a busy day, she rubbed her neck and checked the time—almost time to get off work.
After work, she rode her bicycle home. Near the compound, in a small grove, she suddenly spotted Qiao Shuhui and Shen Yujie hugging each other.
Her eyes lit up. Thinking about how someone had been following her all day, she rolled her eyes and snickered.
She parked her bike and tiptoed quietly toward the grove, hiding behind a tree.
She listened carefully to their conversation.
Qiao Shuhui buried her head in Shen Yujie’s chest, tears welling up. “Brother Yujie, Yifei… he…”
Thinking Lin Yifei had bullied her, Shen Yujie frowned. “Did he bully you?”
Qiao Shuhui hugged his waist tightly, shaking her head and sobbing softly without saying anything.
Gu Yihan crouched and peeked at them, thinking, Wow, this crying act isn’t something just anyone can pull off.
Those tears that won’t quite fall, and when they do, she still looks beautiful.
If it were me crying, I’d be all tears and snot together.
Staring at Qiao Shuhui, Gu Yihan complained inwardly, What the—did they just kiss?
Damn, they’re already kissing. No wonder she’s a modern transmigrator.
Breathing heavily, Qiao Shuhui looked at Shen Yujie with a flushed face. “Brother Yujie, what we’re doing is wrong.”
Shen Yujie held her tightly. After calming himself down, he said, “The one who should’ve married you was me. Lin Yifei came later.”
Not far away, a soldier hiding in a tree listened to their conversation in stunned silence.
At first, he thought Gu Yihan had some unspeakable secret.
Who knew she was just watching a pair of illicit lovers meet—worse, the woman was Lin Yifei’s wife from their own unit.
How awkward.
How was he supposed to report this?
Say he watched an illicit affair with Gu Yihan?
He’d probably get scolded so badly by Commander Tang that he wouldn’t be able to lift his head.
