Qi Yanran followed the soldier into the investigation room with her heart in her throat. When she pushed the door open, she saw Du Xiao with red eyes, explaining something to Brigade Commander Zhang.

When Du Xiao saw Qi Yanran, she quickly walked over to her, a flash of smugness in her eyes.

Yet she choked up and said, “Yanran, I really helped you mail that letter to Gujia Village.”

“You have to explain it clearly to Brigade Commander Zhang. You wrote that letter yourself, and that handwriting is yours. It can’t be fake.”

Brigade Commander Zhang looked at Qi Yanran deeply and asked, “Why did you write to Zhou Jianguo?”

Qi Yanran’s face instantly turned pale.

Yesterday, she had heard the military wives whispering that the person who caused trouble at Gu Yihan’s home had been caught. Since then, she had been worried.

She couldn’t think of any excuse and didn’t know how to respond.

Her lips trembled as she looked at Brigade Commander Zhang and said in a voice as soft as a mosquito, “I just wanted to help…”

Brigade Commander Zhang’s face darkened. He snorted and raised his hand, slapping the letter onto the table.

He shouted angrily, “You’re a soldier in the art troupe. Don’t you know that sabotaging a military marriage is illegal?”

“You even used money to tempt him and gave him ideas, telling him to report Gu Yihan to the Revolutionary Committee. Do you deserve your parents?”

When Qi Yanran heard that he said she had instructed Zhou Jianguo to report Gu Yihan, she suddenly raised her head and looked at Du Xiao in disbelief.

Then she turned to Brigade Commander Zhang and shook her head helplessly.

“I didn’t tell Gu Yihan’s biological father to report her.”

Brigade Commander Zhang noticed her reaction and knew that Du Xiao must have stirred things up.

Du Xiao lowered her head and tried hard to control her expression.

In her heart, she sneered, Qi Yanran, don’t blame me. Blame yourself for being too stupid and naïve.

You could like anyone, but you had to like a married man like Lu Huailin. That gave me the chance to get rid of you.

A cold voice sounded in her ears.

“Get out.”

She looked up in confusion and met Brigade Commander Zhang’s icy gaze.

She hesitantly pointed at herself. “You mean… me?”

He didn’t bother replying, only nodded slightly.

Du Xiao’s heart raced. She opened the door and walked out, trying to recall whether she had done anything to annoy him.

In the Investigation Room, Only Qi Yanran and Brigade Commander Zhang remained.

The room fell silent.

After sitting down, he looked at Qi Yanran, who stood there with her head lowered like a frightened quail.

“You can’t stay in the Kun City Military District anymore.”

Qi Yanran’s eyes reddened. She looked up at him and said tearfully, “Uncle Zhang, I was wrong. I won’t dare do it again.”

His gaze swept over her, his voice cold.

“Yanran, you should know this.”

“If I weren’t the one investigating this, and it were someone else, do you know what would happen to you?”

“Sabotaging a military marriage, moral misconduct, instigating others to report—any one of these is enough to get you expelled from the army and given a serious demerit in your file.”

Hearing his tone, Qi Yanran knew there was no room for negotiation.

This time, her tears fell uncontrollably.

He sighed. “Yanran, I was the one who handled your transfer here in the first place.”

“This time, I’ll ask your Aunt Zhang to arrange for you to go to another military district.”

“You’re not young anymore. Learn from this mistake. Be careful when choosing friends.”

He had been busy nonstop these days, and his head was aching badly. He closed his eyes and rubbed his temples.

Then he waved his hand. “Go back and pack your things.”

Qi Yanran hesitated and didn’t move.

He opened his eyes. “Do you have something else to say?”

She said softly, “About my parents… I’ll need you to explain it to them.”

“I know,” he replied tiredly. “You may go.”

In the Art Troupe Dormitory, Qi Yanran planned to ask Du Xiao about Zhou Jianguo’s report. She was just about to push open the door when she heard manic laughter inside.

“Haha… Qi Yanran, you’re finished!”

“I’ll teach you to act superior and look down on me!”

“You give me things you don’t want and expect me to be grateful? Haha… I finally brought you down!”

“I’ll just wait and watch you fall from the top into the mud.”

“And then I’ll ‘show mercy’ and give you a little handout, so you can feel what it’s like to be humiliated, to have your dignity trampled.”

Qi Yanran tightly gripped the doorframe.

She had always treated Du Xiao as her best friend. She never imagined that this was what she really thought.

With a bang, the door flew open.

Du Xiao, sitting on her bed, was startled.

When she saw Qi Yanran’s expressionless face, her heart skipped a beat.

Had she heard everything?

She quickly stood up and forced a smile.

“Yanran, when did you get back?”

“I was really worried about you. Since you’re back, does that mean everything’s fine?”

Qi Yanran didn’t answer.

She slowly walked up to her, raised her arm, and slapped her hard across the face.

Smack!

Du Xiao was knocked to the ground, stunned.

She clutched her burning cheek and looked up in disbelief.

“Why did you hit me?!”

Qi Yanran didn’t reply.

She stood over her and slapped her again.

Before Du Xiao could get up, Qi Yanran kicked her in the chest.

Then she bent down, grabbed Du Xiao’s chin, and examined the handprints on her face.

She sneered, “Now they’re symmetrical. Much prettier.”

“Ah! Qi Yanran, I’ll kill you!”

Du Xiao scrambled up and rushed at her.

Qi Yanran dodged and kicked her in the calf, sending her sprawling face-first to the ground.

Before she could rise, Qi Yanran straddled her abdomen and pinned one of her arms.

She slapped her repeatedly while scolding her.

“You little bitch, keep pretending!”

“Why did I hit you? You know perfectly well!”

“Ah! You shrew! The troupe leader won’t let you off!”

Qi Yanran finally got tired and stood up, brushing her hands.

She looked down at Du Xiao, who was pretending to be unconscious.

“You think I’m afraid?”

“I’m being transferred soon. Before I leave, you’d better stay out of my sight.”

“Otherwise, every time I see you, I’ll beat you.”

She opened the door, then turned back.

“I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.”

“Even if I’m expelled from the army, I’m still the cherished daughter of the Qi family.”

“How could I fall so low that I’d need your charity?”

“And without me, you’re nothing.”

“You’ll always be a piece of rotten mud crawling at other people’s feet.”

With that, she slammed the door and left.

After a while, Du Xiao slowly got up.

A sinister smile spread across her face.

She gently touched her swollen cheek and murmured, “But what if the Qi family falls?”

“Will you still be their precious jewel then?”
