Chu Ling’s breathing became labored, at one point suffocating so severely that her mind went blank.
Cui Xi was frantic, biting down hard with her upper teeth.
Bai Su and the Ghost Scholar pulled with all their strength, Wangcai tugged desperately, yet they couldn’t budge the evil spirit at all.
“Am I about to die?” The thought suddenly exploded in Chu Ling’s mind. The suffocating sensation spread through her whole body, and flashes of memories surged, as if they were all being played at once.
“Xiao Ling, you have to live well.”
“Xiao Ling, your parents will come back for you. We’ll go together.”
“Xiao Ling, don’t be afraid. Your parents are here.”
Chu Ling shivered violently and snapped her eyes open. One hand grabbed the evil spirit, creating a bit of space for herself, while the other hand pulled back, ready to shoot a miniature arrow.
The Empress Dowager reacted quickly as well, blocking with her phoenix-headed cane, staying out of Chu Ling’s attack range.
Gritting her teeth, blood constantly trickled from the corner of Chu Ling’s lips. Her gaze slowly locked onto the evil spirit’s eyes. Then, with a sudden movement, she shot her final miniature arrow straight at its forehead.
“Die!”
The Empress Dowager’s heart skipped a beat. She tried to comfort herself, thinking the spirit could not be harmed, but the next instant, her eyes widened in shock as she jabbed her cane and rushed forward in panic.
“Ah—”
The evil spirit let out a piercing scream, clawing at the arrow embedded in its forehead. The black mist swirling around its body churned violently, its eyes glowing crimson as it stared at Chu Ling.
Chu Ling had just been freed and was gasping for air, helplessly watching the evil spirit’s claws strike again. She had no strength to evade.
Cui Xi dashed forward instantly to block it. The evil spirit grabbed her by the neck, lifting her high, fingers tightening inch by inch.
Chu Ling pulled a dagger from her boot and stabbed at the evil spirit.
“Let her go! Let her go!”
The evil spirit screamed sharply, oblivious, refusing to release Cui Xi. Wangcai barked desperately in alarm.
Bai Su suddenly grabbed Chu Ling’s hand and looked at the Empress Dowager.
“This is our chance. Don’t waste it.”
Chu Ling’s mind was still hazy. She slashed her own arm, and when the pain cleared her thoughts, she charged at the Empress Dowager, holding her hostage.
“Stop him! Stop him!” Chu Ling cried, pressing the dagger against the Empress Dowager’s neck. “Command him to release her!”
The Empress Dowager, however, smiled coldly.
“Even if you kill me, I won’t make him release her. I want him to kill everyone of the Xiao family.”
The Ghost Scholar glanced at the miniature arrow lodged in the evil spirit’s forehead and suddenly realized.
“Master, the arrow only pierced an inch because it was soaked in your blood. Try using the Empress Dowager’s blood!”
Chu Ling slashed the Empress Dowager’s arm with her dagger. Once covered in fresh blood, she charged at the evil spirit and plunged the dagger deep into its abdomen.
“Ah—ah—ah—”
The evil spirit screamed in excruciating pain, striking out and hurling Chu Ling away.
Bai Su leapt forward to catch her. They landed on the ground, and Chu Ling spat out a mouthful of blood, her energy fading.
“Xiao Ling, are you alright?” Bai Su asked anxiously.
Chu Ling opened her mouth and coughed up another mouthful of blood.
“I think… I think it worked…”
Bai Su’s eyes filled with tears of relief. “Our Xiao Ling… did so well. Our Xiao Ling did exceptionally well.”
Unable to bear the pain, the evil spirit also threw Cui Xi aside. The Ghost Scholar shouted to Bai Su, who quickly got up and caught Cui Xi safely.
The Empress Dowager, seeing the evil spirit’s state, panicked and lunged forward, throwing her phoenix-headed cane aside.
The malevolent spirit clutched its wounded area, eyes blazing red, letting out a sharp, piercing shriek.
“Pull it out! Pull it out!” the Empress Dowager cried.
The spirit screamed shrilly, gripping the dagger tightly—but it couldn’t pull it out at all!
“The spirit is injured. We have a chance to fight,” Ghost Scholar said calmly, then suddenly lowered his gaze, looking at Chu Ling with tender affection. “Master, when we first met, you called me ‘Teacher,’ and I accepted that. I watched you, step by step, travel from Sishui County all the way to the capital. I watched you fight for justice for the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, and I watched you grow into the person you are today. Master feels no regrets in this life.”
Chu Ling felt an inexplicable unease, her hand instinctively reaching toward Ghost Scholar.
Bai Su helped Cui Xi over and grabbed Chu Ling’s hand, her eyes showing relief. “I always thought my obsession was to completely kill Bai Zhuoxing, but in truth, my obsession was never seeing the Crown Princess one last time. Yet I’ve accompanied her daughter on this long journey, seeing her grow up so well… so Aunt Su has no regrets in this life.”
“Master, Aunt Su… why are you suddenly saying this?” Chu Ling, flustered, reached out to grab them—but Bai Su and Ghost Scholar avoided her grasp.
“Xiao Ling, everything has cause and effect. The late emperor killed Yang Jingyuan, so the Empress Dowager, seeking revenge, killed the Crown Prince. Because of the Crown Prince’s death, we cannot enter reincarnation…” Ghost Scholar earnestly gave Chu Ling one final lesson. “So, don’t let hatred fully occupy your heart. Just as you’ve done all along, help those who cannot speak for themselves, help them seek justice, and believe that justice does exist in this world.”
After saying this, Ghost Scholar, together with Bai Su, resolutely moved toward the spirit.
Cui Xi cried, holding Chu Ling’s hand. “Miss, I’ve done wrong, and I wanted to make amends, to always stay by your side. But I can’t stay anymore… I have to leave too.”
After swallowing the last divine pill, Chu Ling struggled to stand, desperately trying to pull them back—but her whole body felt like it had fallen apart; she had no strength at all.
Wangcai whimpered, licked Chu Ling’s face, nudged her once more, and then ran after Cui Xi.
Bai Su drew out the white silk, wrapping it around the spirit’s neck, while Ghost Scholar forced the folding fan into the spirit’s mouth. Together with Cui Xi and Wangcai, they strained with all their might, forcibly separating the spirit from the Empress Dowager.
Gritting her teeth, Chu Ling crawled toward the Empress Dowager, grabbing her legs and pulling her backward.
The Empress Dowager turned back, crying bitterly, blood smeared across her face, her front soaked in crimson, a dark purple handprint on her neck a shocking sight—but still, she wasn’t dead. She could still live!
“You deserve to die!” the Empress Dowager grabbed her phoenix-headed cane and swung it backward.
Chu Ling held on with all her might, eyes red as she looked at her. “I know your scheme! That Fu Qingyu seems to help Chu Yue kill Nangong Jing, but from start to finish, Fu Qingyu has been on your side!”
The Empress Dowager stared back at her fiercely.
“You don’t just want the royal family dead—you want to destroy the noble clans! You want the entire Great Zhou to fall!” Chu Ling shouted.
The malevolent spirit struggled, trying to rush at the Empress Dowager.
Bai Su gritted her teeth, persisting, ignoring the harm from the black mist around the spirit, and, despite her unstable soul, pulled the spirit away with all her strength.
The Empress Dowager struggled but was held firmly by Chu Ling.
“You told him about Fu Qingyu’s mother dying early, didn’t you?” Chu Ling shouted. “Grand Tutor Fu thought you were collaborating with Fu Qingyu through him—but Fu Qingyu had already joined your side, which is why he seized the chance to kill Grand Tutor Fu tonight.”
The Empress Dowager grit her teeth, glaring at Chu Ling. “He no longer wanted to live under threats or control. I promised him power, so naturally he would help me!”
Chu Ling, without knowing where the strength came from, lunged at the Empress Dowager, holding her tightly, using lightness skill to retreat rapidly, and then fell heavily to the ground.
“Xiao Ling! Well done!” Bai Su laughed heartily. “Truly the person we raised!”
Ghost Scholar shouted, and several spirits again pulled the malevolent spirit with all their might.
Moonlight silently emerged from the thick clouds, pale and spreading over the ground, falling on Chu Ling and the Empress Dowager.
Chu Ling bit her lip until it bled, holding the Empress Dowager tightly, watching as the distant figures gradually dissipated in the moonlight, until… they completely vanished.
The Empress Dowager screamed miserably, “Jingyuan! Jingyuan!”
Chu Ling released the Empress Dowager, drew a silver needle, and placed it at her neck. “The malevolent spirit cannot enter reincarnation—it has completely dissipated!”
And her Master, Aunt Su, Cui Xi, and Wangcai—they will definitely enter reincarnation, and they will definitely come back again!
