Early the next morning.
Su He, wearing a face as terrifying as a corpse, came to find Chu Ling and the others. In front of them, he took out a porcelain bottle, poured a few pills into his palm, and extended his hand forward.
“Take it.”
Wan Sanjin swallowed hard. “Poison… right?”
Su He nodded. “Yes.”
Wan Sanjin felt like crying and laughing at the same time. He looked at Chu Ling helplessly. “Master… we’re doomed. He really wants to poison us to death.”
Chu Ling let out a soft hiss. “Su Coroner, think carefully—aren’t we your close friends who spend every day together?”
Xiao Hua first pinched one pill, then gave one to Zhang Dong. “Master, you forgot—Hundred Poison Pill.”
Chu Ling made an “oh” sound, understanding immediately. Before Su He could get angry, she quickly pinched one and swallowed it.
Wan Sanjin followed suit, pinching one and swallowing it in a single bite.
Finally, only one pill remained, which Su He took himself. After taking it, a strange smile appeared on his face. “The Hundred Poison Pill can protect against all poisons, but it is also a poison itself, so there may be a slight discomfort.”
Chu Ling noticed that when Su He said “slight,” the expression on his face couldn’t hide the amusement.
Wan Sanjin asked fearfully, “Will it… kill us?”
“No,” Su He replied, and with light steps, returned to his room to start packing.
Chu Ling forced herself to calm down. “Let’s quickly pack up and get ready to leave.”
Everyone responded and scattered to prepare.
By the time they were ready to depart, Xuanwu had already been waiting for a while.
Chu Ling and the others greeted him, then climbed into the carriage. Zhang Dong drove the carriage slowly forward, while Xuanwu and his men followed behind.
At the city gate, Zhang Dong immediately spotted Zhu Que carrying a bundle. Without stopping, he informed the gate guards, then dashed out quickly.
Zhu Que was momentarily startled. Before she could react, Xuanwu threw her a rein. “You’re not taking the carriage, are you?”
Zhu Que secured her bundle and swung herself onto the horse. “No need.”
Xuanwu glanced at her and then led his people ahead.
Chu Ling lifted the curtain and looked back, then sneered as she lowered it. “Clearly, they’re here to monitor us, and they still want to get on my carriage?”
No sooner had Chu Ling spoken than she suddenly felt a chilling cold radiating from the inside out, making her shiver involuntarily. Goosebumps rose all over her body.
“W-what’s happening? Why am I so cold?” Wan Sanjin hugged his arms tightly, rubbing them furiously.
Xiao Hua also felt a chill. Even Zhang Dong outside slowed down his movements.
Chu Ling suddenly seemed to understand. She looked at Su He, who was hugging his own arms, with utter disbelief. “Su Coroner… you’re incredible. You took the poison yourself just to dose us?”
Su He hugged himself tightly, exhaling cold breath. “I told you, there would be a slight discomfort.”
“Slight discomfort?” Chu Ling pointed at Su He, letting out her own cold breath. “This is like throwing a perfectly healthy person into an ice cellar.”
“Y-yeah…” Wan Sanjin clenched his teeth so tightly that they ground together, making a sizzling, chattering sound.
At this moment, outside, Xuanwu seemed to shout something, as if surprised about Zhang Dong. After Zhang Dong sought help, Xuanwu directly came to assist them with driving the carriage.
Zhang Dong returned to the carriage and held himself tightly. “Master Su, do you have any medicine to suppress it?”
Su He shivered slightly. “No, but in about an hour, it should heat up.”
Chu Ling thought to herself, Could it really be a sensation of ice and fire at once? Sure enough, an hour later, she truly felt what it meant.
Just moments ago, she had exhaled cold air from her mouth from freezing. Now, she was sweating from the heat, her face flushed bright red, like a monkey’s backside.
“It’s just a minor problem. Once you get through it, it’ll be fine. That’s what happens when the medicine is strong,” Su He said, forcing himself.
Wan Sanjin was speechless, frantically fanning the air. “Su He, you really are ruthless.”
“I’m just worried we might stir up trouble wherever we go. What if someone poisoned us one day?” Su He said, looking at them like they should be grateful. Chu Ling and Wan Sanjin felt like hitting him, but didn’t even bother moving.
Although Luozhou wasn’t far from Liangzhou, to investigate Prefect Yang’s grain transport routes, the group took a detour and stopped at a small town to rest.
Chu Ling and the others took the opportunity to wash up with hot water and rested for the night.
Zhuque, with a strange expression, stopped outside their room. As her hand touched the door, Xuanwu immediately appeared, drawing his sword to block her.
“Heir Xiao sent you to assist in the investigation, not to sneakily watch over Prefect Chu,” Xuanwu said coldly.
Zhuque avoided the blade, her expression slightly cold. “I’m just worried about them… I don’t know what’s wrong. It’s like they’ve committed a serious crime.”
“It’s none of your business,” Xuanwu forced her back and stationed himself in front of the door.
Zhuque flicked her sleeve coldly and strode away.
The next morning, Chu Ling and the others came downstairs refreshed for breakfast.
Su He, in gratitude, specially gave Xuanwu a bottle of medicine—everyone silently understood the gesture.
After breakfast, Chu Ling and Wan Sanjin set out to investigate the case, and Zhuque immediately followed.
Chu Ling ignored her, walking at her own pace, asking questions along the way, paying no attention to Zhuque’s inquiries, focusing solely on the investigation.
Finally, Zhuque couldn’t hold back and suddenly blocked Chu Ling, raising her sword.
Chu Ling looked up at her, knowing Zhuque had reached her limit. “What are you doing? Do you intend to hinder my investigation? Did Heir Xiao order this?”
Zhuque’s face was icy. “I came under Heir Xiao’s orders to assist you, Prefect Chu, but since yesterday, you’ve been acting abnormally. Today, you wander about freely, refusing to answer my questions…”
“Miss Zhuque, you may have forgotten your own position,” Chu Ling smiled. “I am Prefect Chu, sent to investigate by imperial decree. I am no subordinate of Heir Xiao, and I do not need to care for your opinions or feelings.”
“All I know is that I was sent to investigate the traitors. Anyone attempting to stop me or pry for information is their accomplice. When I return to the capital, I will report everything to the Emperor. Miss Zhuque, what do you think of that?”
Zhuque furrowed her brows, then seemed to realize something. “You’ve taken Fu Qingyu’s side!”
“Bold!” Chu Ling snapped coldly. “Miss Zhuque, I am an imperial official. I do not take sides. I act solely on the Emperor’s orders. I hope you will not speak nonsense and risk slander.”
Zhuque suddenly realized she had misspoken. Her face darkened as she tried to explain, but Chu Ling interrupted her.
“Miss Zhuque, I am not someone who controls positions. In fact, your surveillance won’t help Heir Xiao at all. As for what Chu Rou instructed you to do, if you believe it, then you truly are foolish,” Chu Ling said with a deliberately low chuckle. “What you think of as your helpful devotion may just be tailoring clothes for someone else.”
With that, Chu Ling signaled to Wan Sanjin, and the two continued forward, leaving Zhuque alone, her expression shifting constantly.
