After leaving Prince Rui’s mansion, Mei Gao personally drove the carriage to see the two off.
Inside the carriage, Chu Ling didn’t say a word, and Wan Sanjin, being sensible, didn’t ask anything either.
When they arrived at the Wan residence, the carriage slowly came to a stop.
Mei Gao personally set down a low stool for them to get out, then looked at Chu Ling and asked, “Sir Chu, do you have anything you’d like to say to me?”
Chu Ling rolled her eyes and said, “Yes, I do.”
Mei Gao cupped his hands respectfully and said solemnly, “Please, sir, go ahead.”
“From now on, we’re grasshoppers on the same rope. If I ever get into trouble next time, you have to bring your men to back me up—and don’t forget to save me too,” Chu Ling said seriously.
Mei Gao: “…Sir Chu, I still have things to attend to, so I’ll take my leave first.” With that, he jumped onto the carriage, took a turn, and tried to run off.
Chu Ling, caught off guard, placed her hands on her hips and shouted, “Why are you running so fast?!”
Naturally, Mei Gao ran even faster.
Wan Sanjin shook his head with a chuckle. “Master Mei really can’t be teased.”
Chu Ling smiled softly, patted Wan Sanjin on the shoulder, and then went to knock on the main door. The door opened quickly, leading the two inside.
“Sir, Young Master, the carriage has already been returned by the Song family. Steward Liu is in the front hall preparing dinner.”
Wan Sanjin hummed in acknowledgment. “You go on and handle your work.”
The young servant nodded, bowed, and left.
“What exactly did Prince Rui say?” Wan Sanjin asked, curiosity getting the better of him, lowering his voice.
Chu Ling looked at him. “Answer me first—why was my news blocked by your eldest brother?”
“How should I know? Father and my eldest brother never allow me to be involved in these things,” Wan Sanjin scratched his head, clearly helpless.
“Then where is your father now?” Chu Ling asked next.
“In Tiandu City—that’s the Wan family’s main base. I was born there, grew up there,” Wan Sanjin said with a hint of nostalgia. “Sir, once things in the capital settle down, we should take a trip to Tiandu City.”
Chu Ling nodded, smiling. “Alright, we’ll go.”
“We’ll have to bring Qingyu along too. Otherwise, after the spring imperial examination, he’ll surely pass and become an official, and then he won’t be as free as he is now,” Wan Sanjin sighed, genuinely worried.
Chu Ling rolled her eyes at Wan Sanjin, shaking her head in mild annoyance, and walked ahead first.
“Hey, sir, you haven’t told me what Prince Rui actually said yet,” Wan Sanjin pressed.
“He said I could do as I pleased in the capital, and even left me Prince Rui’s edict. After the emperor’s birthday celebrations, I’m supposed to leave the capital as soon as possible,” Chu Ling replied.
Wan Sanjin was surprised. “Prince Rui is really that easy to talk to?”
Chu Ling guessed, “Maybe he approves of what I’ve done along the way, and I also indirectly helped him with a few matters.”
Wan Sanjin nodded in understanding. “Ah, that makes sense.”
“Eh?” Chu Ling exclaimed in surprise. “Is Coroner Su standing as punishment? Why isn’t he moving? And the others?”
“The others went to the courtyard for dinner. You two, come over here!” Uncle Hong barked angrily.
Chu Ling and Wan Sanjin stiffened their necks and slowly moved over.
Wan Sanjin poked Su He. “Su He, what did you do?”
Su He looked innocent. “I just picked up a corpse, and I nearly got arrested for it.”
“Picking up a corpse can get you arrested?” Wan Sanjin was surprised. “We’ve traveled all this way and never got arrested for that.”
Su He nodded heavily, his deadpan face full of grievance. “I picked up the corpse, I even helped examine the cause of death, I sewed it up for them, and I paid for the burial. What did I do wrong?”
Wan Sanjin nodded in agreement. “Yeah, really, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
Chu Ling leaned over and asked, “Did you pick the wrong place?”
Su He shook his head. They hadn’t gone to the wrong place.
“Everyone shut up!” Uncle Hong was so angry he gritted his teeth. He slammed the table and pointed at the three of them, shouting, “You just got here today—yeah, just got here! You had lunch before leaving, and by my count, it’s only been half a day! Half a day! Those who went to prison, go to prison; those who fought, fought!”
Chu Ling gasped and nudged Su He with her elbow. “You fought? Did you win?”
“I won!” Su He said proudly.
Wan Sanjin smirked. “I won too, along with Sir. We beat more than thirty people and even poisoned them.”
Uncle Hong’s face turned red with anger. “You’re proud of that?”
Wan Sanjin, still not fully aware of the situation, nodded proudly. “We all won!”
Uncle Hong slapped his forehead, bracing himself on the table and sitting down. “Everyone, stand straight!”
The three of them immediately stood at attention.
“You, Su He. You went with Han Jin, Han Yin, Wang Wei, and Wang Yan—you five went to the burial mound and specifically targeted the freshly dumped corpses. When someone dumped them, you wrapped them up and placed them in coffins. Isn’t that obviously intentional?” Uncle Hong scolded.
“They were just-dead corpses. I couldn’t just ignore them,” Su He replied.
Uncle Hong: “……”
Chu Ling asked, “Uncle Hong, what happened?”
Uncle Hong frowned. “Someone dumped corpses at the burial mound today. All of them were servants—maids and lackeys—probably from the same household.”
“Dumping corpses in broad daylight… clearly fearless,” Su He said, looking at Chu Ling.
Chu Ling frowned in disgust. “Which family was it?”
Su He was annoyed. “We don’t know which family, so I asked. They wouldn’t say and even looked like they wanted to fight, so I preemptively struck first… After beating them, I reported it to the magistrate, since eight people had already died. Even without an autopsy, just by looking, I could tell they all died around the same time.”
“Uncle Hong, this case needs to be investigated,” Chu Ling said seriously.
Uncle Hong sighed. “It should be investigated, yes, but why make such a big scene? You just arrived in the capital. If you draw too much attention, it could be bad.”
“No problem. Prince Rui said the more you hide, the more attention it draws. Acting brazenly won’t attract much notice,” Chu Ling said.
Uncle Hong exhaled softly. “Let’s hope so… Wait, you two, stand straight!”
“Su He’s actions are understandable, but you two—just delivering a message—somehow got into a conflict with the Imperial Guards and ended up in the Dali Temple prison?”
Wan Sanjin hurriedly explained the whole story, ending with, “Uncle Hong, it’s not our fault. The Imperial Guards were being unreasonable… Plus, when Lord Mei came to get us, those guards were released too. It’s really hard to understand.”
Uncle Hong frowned. “I know. You were rescued by Prince Rui. The Imperial Guards were rescued after their commander pleaded for them. But Qi Gui was dismissed and thrown out of the city. The emperor reinstated him to appease the Song family.”
“Then it looks like no one can bully Miss Song Lian anymore,” Chu Ling said happily—a good ending after all.
“The emperor dealt with Boyuan Hou, stripping his title and salary,” Uncle Hong said, glancing at Chu Ling. “Sir, you’re completely famous now.”
