As noon approached, Su He finally returned.
The people of the Tianjian Sect had specially prepared a mugwort-infused drink for him. By the time Su He had settled himself and stepped out, lunch had also been brought over.
Wan Sanjin reached out to stop him: “Talk after the meal.”
Su He stared at him as if he were an idiot: “What else? Should we chat while eating?”
Wan Sanjin hurriedly shook his head: “No.”
Su He rolled his eyes in exasperation: “Then eat!”
After the meal, the Tianjian Sect members packed up their things and informed Chu Ling of the hour for the afternoon trip to the treasure vault before departing.
Once the others had left, they closed the door, and he walked straight over to the group: “There was no autopsy report this time, so I’ll give you a rough rundown. The Tianjian Sect has also taken this seriously and begun investigations everywhere.”
“First, the blood corpse is roughly thirty-five years old. According to the Sect’s investigation, it should be Wan Dingsheng, a disciple of the Da Chao Sect. On that morning, their sect disciples had gone out together to a dark alley, but halfway through they disappeared for the time it takes to drink a tea, and when they reappeared, they had become a blood corpse, dumped onto a street in the city.”
“During the autopsy, I carefully cut open his clothes and discovered that the bleeding wasn’t just on the surface of his limbs—his entire body was exuding blood from under the skin. When I opened his abdomen, I found that all his internal organs were destroyed, and the damage was fairly uniform.”
Chu Ling’s eyes narrowed: “If the damage is uniform, then it must have been caused by an extremely strong external force. So internal power?”
Su He nodded: “After talking with a few people from the Tianjian Sect, everyone agreed it had to be an extremely strong internal power attack. Later, we even confirmed with Sect Master Xie. He said that the Tianjian Sect’s methods are already the strongest in the martial world, but even they could never reach this level. The only possibility is that this person’s methods may be inferior to the Tianjian Sect’s, but their internal power cultivation far surpasses Sect Master Xie.”
Chu Ling frowned: “So unless Mei Zhongxue comes out, no one could have defeated the Bai Zhuoxing?”
Wan Sanjin drew in a sharp breath, clutching his head: “Then it’s over for us, isn’t it?”
Su He shook his head: “That’s what I thought at first too. But later, when I re-stitched the corpse, I noticed something odd. There was a small blood spot at the back of his neck. I extracted a little blood, dissolved it in water, and tested it with a silver needle—it was poison.”
“What kind of poison?” Chu Ling asked.
Su He shook his head. He didn’t know.
Wan Sanjin asked in surprise: “Not in the Wan Du Jing?”
Su He shook his head: “No.”
Chu Ling speculated: “So the poison weakened this martial artist, then a single internal power strike shattered his organs and made blood ooze from his skin, turning him into a blood corpse? But why would the Bai Zhuoxing do this?”
“I don’t know what the poison was,” Su He frowned, “but I smelled another scent on the corpse, a slightly fishy fragrance.”
“Fishy fragrance?” Chu Ling frowned. That was not a pleasant smell.
Su He confirmed: “Yes, a fishy scent.”
Chu Ling lowered her gaze, lost in thought. After a moment, she looked up in shock: “A fishy fragrance would attract insects—gu worms. This blood corpse was used by the Bai Zhuoxing as bait, to lure… to lure the Blood Gu.”
Wan Sanjin instinctively hugged his arms, feeling a chill.
Ling Da suddenly passed through where Wan Sanjin was standing, poked Chu Ling, and said: “Divine Incense… Divine Incense can attract gu worms.”
The Ghost Scholar immediately asked, “How is the Divine Incense made?”
Ling Da shook his head. “Only the Shaman God knows how to make it, because a god will only tell their most devoted servant.”
Chu Ling suddenly seemed to think of something and casually mentioned, “This Bai Zhuoxing is really strange. His medical skills and martial arts… they don’t seem like what other people in the martial world learn. Not traditional… and rather bizarre.”
Wan Sanjin furrowed his brows in agreement. “It is quite peculiar.”
Bai Su stiffened, then quietly turned to Ling Da, grabbing him and pulling him close, looking at him nervously. “Does your Shaman clan have medical skills? How does your clan treat the sick and save lives?”
“Of course, we use divine insects to heal people,” Ling Da replied.
The Ghost Scholar questioned from the side, “Do the divine insects know where a person is sick?”
Ling Da widened his eyes. “Only a shaman doctor knows, and only a shaman doctor can save someone. Our clan’s shaman doctors are formidable. Once, someone’s stomach was slashed open, and after seeing inside, the shaman still managed to save the person.”
“But shaman doctors are terrifying. Those in the clan who commit offenses and are sent to them ultimately get thrown into the Divine Pool for purification,” Ling Da added.
Chu Ling’s eyes flickered slightly. She rested her forehead on her hand and looked at everyone. “Do you think it’s possible that Bai Zhuoxing’s bizarre medical techniques and martial arts actually come from some strange place?”
Uncle Wu spoke up, “The world is vast; there are martial arts we don’t know about. Back when Bai Zhuoxing appeared, martial artists just thought another genius had emerged. It wasn’t until he committed a series of unforgivable crimes and became wanted by the entire martial world that people realized how dangerous he truly was.”
“His martial arts were indeed strange, with no discernible path. His medical skills were exquisite, but his methods were cruel. Back then, among those trying to suppress him, some even tried to imprison him in their sects to force him to reveal his martial arts and medical techniques—but he always escaped, and then suddenly disappeared.”
Chu Ling nodded lightly, giving Bai Su a meaningful glance.
Bai Su was surprised. “You mean Bai Zhuoxing’s martial arts and medical skills actually come from the Shaman clan?”
The Ghost Scholar lightly tapped his folding fan. “Very likely. And the Shaman clan raises gu insects.”
Bai Su grabbed Ling Da again. “In your clan, were there traitors?”
Ling Da’s eyes reddened with anger. “Yes! Gugu’s daughter took everything away, and the new Shaman God had to request the god’s command again.”
Bai Su couldn’t help but raise a hand to Chu Ling’s shoulder, steadying herself, and continued, “Do you know where Gugu’s daughter went?”
“May the sinner Mingyue die an unpleasant death. No matter where she went, the god will take her life,” Ling Da said with hatred.
Bai Su suddenly looked up. “Mingyue? Mingyue?!”
The Ghost Scholar stared at Bai Su in shock. “Your sect… isn’t it… the Mingyue Sect?”
Bai Su gripped Chu Ling’s shoulder tightly, almost in a trance. “It all connects… it all connects… the source of everything was destined long ago.”
Chu Ling then turned to Su He. “Su He, give the jade token to Master Wan. We’ll go to the treasury this afternoon. You take Zhang Dong, Xiao Hua, and the others outside, and come pick us up around evening.”
Su He nodded, handing the jade token to Wan Sanjin, then asked curiously, “Sir, why the sudden urgency?”
Chu Ling leaned on the table and stood up, frowning. “I plan to coat all the short arrows with the poison you gave me.”
Su He’s expression turned serious, and he also stood. “The short arrows of Sanjin must be treated the same. I’ll do it.”
Uncle Wu gripped his chest in worry. “This person is dangerous. Preparing more is better. If you encounter danger, escape if you can—remember?”
Chu Ling and the others nodded together. “Remembered.”
