In the darkness, Sun Wuji’s cloudy eyes shifted. Very powerful?
He turned to look at the small head beside him, a faint smile curling on his lips. “Maybe… a little powerful.”
Ye Shuangxue rolled her eyes. After the bloody chaos of the night, the little girl’s mind was in turmoil—sleep was out of the question. She lay there with her eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling, lost in thought.
Thinking his little disciple had fallen asleep, Sun Wuji carefully got up, trying not to make a sound as he prepared to leave.
“Thank you, Master.”
Ye Shuangxue’s soft, childlike voice suddenly rang out.
Sun Wuji froze.
He turned back abruptly. In the dim light, a small figure lay on the bed. He could almost make out the bright, dark eyes of his young disciple.
Ye Shuangxue continued, “Old man, when I grow up, I’ll protect you too.”
“I’m going to sleep now.”
After saying something so embarrassingly sentimental, she couldn’t bring herself to say more. Flustered, she pulled the blanket over her little face.
Sun Wuji smiled in relief and nodded repeatedly. “Alright!”
Neither master nor disciple said anything more.
Stepping outside, the north wind howled fiercely. Snow in the air scattered like raindrops, landing across his face. Sun Wuji looked up at the pitch-black sky.
If one day, my little disciple learns about my past… learns that I’m not a good person… will she still like me?
Will she still respect me?
No!
He would never allow such a thing to happen. Before she could ever learn the truth, he would eliminate every possible threat.
“Old Man Sun?”
Ye Tian’s voice sounded out.
Sun Wuji composed himself and turned around. Ye Tian, wrapped in a thick cotton coat, was striding over anxiously.
Before Sun Wuji could speak, Ye Tian asked, “Is Shuangxue in your room?”
“You’ve got quite the nerve—only remembering your daughter now?” Sun Wuji said sarcastically, crossing his arms and leaning against the doorframe.
Ye Tian replied, “With her following you, I’m at ease. Gao Defu’s men came just now, so I came to check.”
“Mm.”
Sun Wuji responded perfunctorily. Seeing Ye Tian about to enter, he added, “Hurry up and take your daughter away. She’s occupying my bed—I don’t even have a place to sleep. Not only did I become a master to your kids, now I’m your babysitter too.”
“Outrageous…”
Sun Wuji grumbled on and on.
Ye Tian didn’t take it to heart. He went inside, picked up the pretending-to-sleep Ye Shuangxue, and carried her back to his own room.
Before leaving, Ye Shuangxue lowered her head. When Ye Tian wasn’t looking, she made a silly face at Sun Wuji. Master and disciple exchanged a knowing smile.
…
Early the next morning—
“What was that commotion last night? Even Old Yang and Brother Duan got up?”
“Four of the Grand Eunuch’s men came last night—all of them ruthless killers…”
“What should we do? Will they kill all of us too?”
Early in the morning, Yuan Heipang and Xiao Wang, along with several other employees, had prepared breakfast but were filled with anxiety as they gathered in the hall.
Everyone looked grim.
Yuan Heipang swallowed nervously and forced a calm tone. “It might just be a misunderstanding.”
“A misunderstanding? Let’s ask the boss when he comes.”
“Let’s not think the worst for now.”
They all looked troubled. They had only enjoyed a few days of peace, and now a powerful Grand Eunuch had appeared—could they even go on living like this?
While they were discussing anxiously, Duan Qingshan and Old Yang entered the hall one after another.
The employees were both curious and worried.
“Brother Duan, were those assassins real last night?”
“Yeah, were they really here to kill us?”
“If we go apologize now… isn’t it already too late?”
Several people gathered around Duan Qingshan.
Duan Qingshan looked at this group of timid companions and said helplessly, “For the next couple of days, eat whatever you want. Don’t treat yourselves badly.”
“Ah?”
“We…” Their faces were filled with grief. Feeling like death was imminent, they looked at the egg buns and millet porridge on the table and suddenly lost all appetite.
By the time Ye Tian arrived in the main hall—
The atmosphere was heavy. Several employees looked pale, and despite the table being filled with a lavish breakfast, they seemed like completely different people from usual, showing no joy at all.
“Master, have an egg.”
“Eat a meat bun.”
“This one’s good too.”
Ye Shuangxue sat on a chair, her little legs dangling and swinging restlessly. Her small face was full of satisfaction, as if the delicious food might make her take off at any moment.
Sun Wuji ate like he hadn’t had a proper meal in hundreds of years, devouring everything in big mouthfuls.
Only the master and disciple pair were carefree, eating the happiest.
Hearing movement, Shangguan Ning turned her head. Seeing Ye Tian enter, she quickly stood up. “Ye Tian, I have something to discuss with you.”
Since it concerned life and death, Ye Tian’s expression turned serious.
Shangguan Ning said, “I plan to sneak into Gao Defu’s residence today. If anything unexpected happens, I’ll notify you immediately—you’ll need to adapt accordingly. Duan Qingshan must stay outside to provide support. On my own, I’m afraid I won’t be able to kill Gao Defu. And the two children must stay with Senior Sun for the next few days.”
Ye Tian nodded.
Ye Shuangxue and Sun Wuji exchanged a glance.
“Is Gao Defu’s residence really that hard to get into?” Ye Shuangxue asked while stuffing millet porridge into her mouth, speaking unclearly.
Sun Wuji glanced at the others present and said expressionlessly, “For them, it’s indeed very difficult.”
The group’s faces turned red.
They lowered their heads, not daring to argue.
Old Yang said, “The guards following Gao Defu are all elite palace experts—at the very least, sixth-rank martial artists. There are at least twenty of them accompanying him to Sifang City. But that’s not the scariest part. The scariest is Gao Defu himself. He’s a trusted confidant of the imperial consort and already one of the top experts in the palace. His strength is at least above the ninth rank.”
After Old Yang finished speaking, the hall fell completely silent.
Everyone looked grim.
Only Ye Shuangxue kept eating her millet porridge, her big eyes darting around, glancing here and there.
If everyone knew Gao Defu was already dead, would they be happy?
But I can’t say that!
If I say it, Ye Tian will definitely guess that Master and I did it… Mm, absolutely won’t say it.
Ye Shuangxue lowered her head and continued eating.
The meal was miserable for everyone else.
Xiao Wang, Yuan Heipang, and the others didn’t say a word the entire time. They were so anxious they were on the verge of tears, the oppressive atmosphere reaching its peak.
Before the table could even be cleared—
“Ye Tian!”
“Ye Tian!”
Tao Lichun came rushing down the street with Zhao Kang. His expression was panicked as he ran straight toward the hotpot restaurant.
Seeing Tao Lichun like this, the people inside the shop were almost in tears.
Yuan Heipang pursed his lips. “I’ll go pack my things. Boss, wait for me.”
“I’ll go pack too.”
“That damn eunuch Gao Defu must have made his move early. After we pack, where do we go?”
The group fell into complete chaos.
Duan Qingshan and Old Yang looked grave, but their eyes burned with fighting spirit, showing no fear at all.
Shangguan Ning had long been mentally prepared. She turned slightly to look at Ye Yunting and Ye Shuangxue, then turned back to Sun Wuji and said sincerely, “Senior, I’ll leave the children to you. The jade token you took is the proof for them to acknowledge their kin. Someone will come looking for them in the next few days.”
“Ye Tian!” Tao Lichun burst through the door and immediately turned to shut it behind him.
In an instant, everyone inside felt despair.
Had things already become this dire?
