The guard, who had initially thought his eyes were playing tricks on him, instinctively turned his head when he heard that.
A small black shadow, carrying a tiny wooden sword on its back, was sprinting with all its might beneath the covered corridor.
Uh…
What was that thing?
The two exchanged glances before finally realizing: “It’s a child.”
“Assassin!”
One of them casually tossed aside his wine flask and immediately gave chase toward Ye Shuangxue. As a seventh-rank expert, his movement technique and speed were dozens of times faster than hers—he was about to catch up in the next instant.
“Not good!”
“My little disciple’s legs are too short—she’s about to be caught.”
Sun Wuji sighed inwardly and quickly stepped out from behind the rockery. Moving like a ghost, he caught up to the two in just a few breaths.
He placed a hand on each of their shoulders.
The two guards reacted instantly. One spun around, drawing his sword and slashing straight toward Sun Wuji’s vital point.
Sun Wuji grinned playfully. His hands seemed to be wrapped in a golden aura as he casually caught the razor-sharp blade with his bare hand.
“Young people, don’t be so quick to fight and kill.”
“Look at you—can’t even catch a five-year-old child. What’s the point of living?”
“Old bastard, I’ll take your life!”
The two guards flew into a rage. With a glance at each other, they coordinated seamlessly and launched another attack at Sun Wuji.
Sun Wuji shook his head. “I was in a good mood today and didn’t intend to kill you. Since you’re so eager to die, I’ll grant your wish.”
The two scoffed.
This was Chief Steward Gao’s residence—who in all of Great Liang would dare trespass here?
This old man and child were nothing more than lowly bumpkins from Sifang City.
Before they could even strike again, Sun Wuji casually snatched a longsword from one of them. With a flash of cold steel, a single strike pierced through both of them—skewering them together like candied hawthorns.
The man looked down at the wound in his abdomen, his eyes filled with terror. He stared at the black-clad figure in disbelief.
His eyes widened… and he died without closing them.
“Troublesome.”
Sun Wuji dusted off his hands, then kicked the two bodies—still strung together—into the garden. Turning around, he dashed along the corridor while shouting: “Wait for me!”
“That scared me to death—someone’s chasing me from behind! Disciple! Disciple!”
“Wait for me!”
Hearing her master’s voice, Ye Shuangxue frowned and turned back.
Her large, dark eyes scanned the surroundings with vigilance. She cautiously hid behind a large pillar, poking out half her head and gesturing to Sun Wuji: “Shh, don’t talk!”
“You’ll attract people—I barely managed to shake them off.”
Sun Wuji crouched beside her, nodding repeatedly, looking extremely obedient. Lowering his voice, he asked: “What do we do now?”
“There are still guards ahead. The corridor is patrolled too. Over there—that’s the eunuch’s room.”
Looking at the faint torchlight flickering behind them, Ye Shuangxue frowned: “Let’s go!”
“We’ll take the rooftops.”
“Good idea.” Sun Wuji smiled dotingly, grabbing his little disciple by the collar and lifting her onto the roof.
The mansion guards were just ordinary grown men, their skills inferior to Ye Shuangxue’s.
Only the guards who followed Gao Defu were ranked experts. As long as he dealt with them, his little disciple could move freely within the eunuch’s residence.
Watching the small black figure move steadily across the snow-covered tiles, Sun Wuji suddenly said: “I lost my sword.”
His tone was anxious. Then he reached up, pulled off his black face covering, and gave an awkward smile. “You go on ahead—wait for me at the Grand Eunuch’s door. I’ll go find my sword first.”
“My heavens!”
Ye Shuangxue was speechless. She smacked her forehead with her little hand and looked helplessly at her master. “Hurry up!”
“We agreed to kill someone together.”
“Old man, you’re not scared, are you?”
“Aren’t you here to protect your master?” Sun Wuji said. With that, he leapt into the air and vanished in an instant.
Ye Shuangxue blinked helplessly. She looked up at the grandest building in the entire residence, her gaze darkening—once the Grand Eunuch was dead, her whole family would be safe.
She reached back and touched the small wooden sword strapped to her back, gathered her courage, and continued sprinting across the rooftops.
Tonight’s operation was going smoothly.
There wasn’t a single obstacle along the way. Following the wall, Ye Shuangxue leapt down from the rooftop.
The surroundings outside the room were silent.
A few stone lanterns in the courtyard flickered with dim yellow light. The Grand Eunuch’s bedroom door—tall, vermilion, and intricately carved—stood before her. Crouching low, her eyes full of vigilance, she gripped her small wooden sword, her courage steadily rising.
No one was around. The perfect chance for a sneak attack.
She crept forward and gently pushed the door open a crack.
Creaaak…
The wooden door made a faint sound. Ye Shuangxue’s heart began to race. She quickly steadied the doorframe with both hands. The pitch-black room was filled with the unknown and a creeping sense of fear. Thinking of Gao Defu’s corpse-like face, cold sweat formed in her palms.
This was her first time going out at night… to kill someone.
She had never killed before.
Her short legs trembled, but when she thought of Ye Tian and her older brother, her eyes grew firmer. Gritting her teeth, she slipped inside.
A pungent scent filled the room—mixed with sweat—so strong it made her want to gag.
Where was the Grand Eunuch?
Her wide eyes scanned the room. Only then did she notice a carved wooden bed in the inner chamber, heavy curtains hanging around it. From within, she could faintly hear breathing.
Right there!
Joy flickered in Ye Shuangxue’s heart. Only then did she remember her master—she seemed to have come in a bit too early.
Should she wait here?
She crouched, about to hide behind the door.
Just as she turned—
Click!
With a crisp sound, the room suddenly lit up as bright as day.
Ye Shuangxue was startled and immediately turned to run.
But suddenly, people surrounded her from all sides.
Gripping her small wooden sword, her expression grew serious as she stared at the figures approaching step by step.
“Let me see… who’s tired of living, sneaking in at this hour?”
Gao Defu’s distinctive voice rang out. His hair hung loose, and he wore white inner robes, with a large red fox-fur cloak draped over his shoulders. In one hand, he held a long sword, its tip dragging across the floor—
Scrrraape…
The grating sound was harsh and piercing.
Ye Shuangxue looked like an enraged little bird, her tiny brows raised. She understood now—she had taken the bait. Gao Defu had expected a night attack, which was why there wasn’t a single guard outside.
That old monster!
But when Gao Defu saw clearly who had come, he froze for a moment.
The spacious room was brightly lit. Several armored subordinates, swords in hand, surrounded a tiny figure—a little girl dressed in black nightwear, holding a toy-like wooden sword, her ink-dark eyes nervously scanning the crowd.
“It’s you?”
“Ye Tian’s daughter?” There was no way Gao Defu could mistake those eyes. His smile turned sinister… and radiant.
Clang!
With a crisp sound, he tossed his long sword onto the ground and said cheerfully, “You’re far more capable than your father. At such a young age, you dare to break into my residence alone.”
“Has Ye Tian come?”
“Where is he?”
“Go to hell, you old pervert!” Ye Shuangxue exploded in anger. With a roar, her tiny body shot forward like a launched projectile, charging straight at Gao Defu.
Gao Defu’s eyes gleamed with excitement. He glanced at his subordinates in the room and ordered, “All of you, get out. No matter what happens inside, without my command, no one is allowed to enter!”
