Xiao Jiang pursed his lips, his little face turning ingratiating as he looked at Ye Tian.
His small hands wouldn’t stay still—both index fingers poking against each other over and over in front of his chest.
Ye Shuangxue shook the hand Ye Tian was holding, frowning slightly. “Didn’t you say my mother is in the Great Zhou?”
“Last time you said she had no choice but to be separated from us.”
“Right!” Ye Tian’s eyes shifted, and he nodded firmly.
“But Master said my mother is already dead. Is that true?” Ye Shuangxue turned to look at Sun Wuji, who had just stepped out.
At that moment, Sun Wuji looked completely bewildered.
His face was like a big tabby cat, and half his beard was gone. Seeing everyone looking at him, he said, “That damn brat dared to burn my beard! If I catch him, I’ll skin him alive! Ye Tian, you brat, you finally came back!”
Sun Wuji rushed over, shoving Xiao Jiang aside and sticking close to Ye Tian. Pouting, he said, “Look at my beard! Look at my face! Kid, did you offend someone again out there? They even came to your house to kidnap your children. If it weren’t for me, your kids would’ve been tricked away! I don’t care, I don’t care—I want something good to eat! At least five roast chickens! You’re buying them for me, buying them for me…” Sun Wuji clung to Ye Tian, acting shamelessly.
Yuan Heipang and a few other employees glanced at Sun Wuji, shook their heads with smiles, and walked off.
They were long used to scenes like this.
“Buy me roast chicken…”
“You brat, my eyebrows and beard are like this because of you! Who do you think this old man did it for…” Seeing no reaction from Ye Tian, Sun Wuji put his hands on his hips in anger.
Ye Tian remained expressionless. He casually picked up a kettle from the table, slowly poured himself a cup of hot water, and only then said, “Who knows? Maybe it was your own enemy.”
“Otherwise, why would they only hurt you and not anyone else?”
“And you’re trying to scam me? Not a chance!”
Ye Shuangxue nodded in agreement.
Xiao Jiang said, “Makes sense.”
Ye Yunting’s lips curled slightly.
The three children saw Ye Tian sit down, so they also gathered around the wooden table and took their seats—one seat each. Only Sun Wuji was left standing alone, even being doubted by Ye Tian. Most importantly, not a single one of the three little brats took his side.
Fuming, Sun Wuji glared at Ye Tian and said angrily, “Good, good! So you’re all bullying this old man, huh? I’ll go catch that brat right now. I’ll let you hear for yourself who he’s really after!”
After saying that, Sun Wuji stomped his foot and rushed out into the wind and snow.
“Master, be careful! Come back early tonight!” Ye Shuangxue called after his departing figure.
The only reply she got was the howling northern wind outside.
“So cold!”
Ye Shuangxue shrank her neck and got up to close the hotpot restaurant’s door.
Ye Tian turned to the eldest. “What else did that person say today?”
Ye Yunting replied, “He said my mother didn’t come to take us because she was sick. Now that she’s recovered, she sent him to bring us back.”
He spoke casually.
Their mother—the mother of the three future villains—came to take them back?
In the original story, their mother was never even mentioned till the end. Ye Tian didn’t know who that man was, but he was certain it was a lie. Seeing the three children staring at him with their dark, round eyes, Ye Tian said:
“Do you still remember what I told you before?”
“Don’t believe what strangers say.”
“Don’t eat what strangers give you.”
“If a stranger tries to take you away, it means they’re trying to kidnap you.”
“Remember!”
The three children answered in unison. Xiao Jiang looked at Ye Tian and asked, “If it really is our mother who comes to find us, what if we don’t recognize her?”
“Why don’t you tell us what our mother looks like?”
Ye Shuangxue’s big eyes sparkled. She shuffled closer and sat beside Ye Tian, resting her chin in her hands obediently, staring at him, waiting for him to speak.
Ye Yunting also quietly looked at Ye Tian, waiting for what came next.
With three pairs of burning eyes fixed on him, Ye Tian felt a bit guilty. He picked up his teacup, took a sip, and forced himself to say, “Well… actually… your mother… your mother can be described in one word—beautiful. Beautiful like a celestial fairy. The most beautiful woman in the world. And she’s gentle, kind, and never raises her voice.”
“Really?” Ye Shuangxue asked.
She didn’t quite believe it—how come their mother was nothing like her?
Ye Tian straightened his face. “Of course!”
“If your mother weren’t beautiful, how could she give birth to such adorable children like you? If she weren’t gentle and kind, how could she raise such good kids? You can doubt yourselves, but you must not doubt what your father says.”
Ye Shuangxue nodded vigorously.
Xiao Jiang touched his cheek with a grin and turned to the eldest. “Big brother, no wonder everyone praises me for being good-looking, hehe…”
Ye Yunting’s face darkened with black lines. This little fool was way too easy to trick.
“I’m too tired today. Let’s stop here for now!” Ye Tian really couldn’t keep making things up, so he quickly stood up and slipped away with an excuse.
Ye Shuangxue asked, “Has Shi Hao’s father been found?”
Ye Tian gave a brief explanation. The three children’s faces turned heavy. Trying to change the subject, Ye Tian quickly said, “Have you three not eaten dinner yet?”
“Dad will make you some poached eggs.”
Letting Sun Wuji cook was like expecting a sow to climb a tree—impossible.
Ye Tian knew that very well.
At the mention of food, Ye Shuangxue suddenly acted strangely and ran toward the backyard, shouting as she went, “I’m not hungry, I won’t eat!”
“I don’t want to eat either.”
Xiao Jiang followed right behind her.
Ye Tian looked at the eldest. The boy’s little face flushed red, and without lifting his head, he said, “Shi Hao’s dad is really pitiful… I don’t feel like eating either.”
Huh?
Only then did Ye Tian realize what was going on. Looking at the eldest’s back, he called out, “No matter how pitiful he is, you still can’t skip dinner. You’re growing—you silly child.”
“All of you are so kind… how am I supposed to rest easy about your future?”
Ye Tian stood there, watching their retreating figures, feeling helpless. The great villain from the original story had, ever since he transmigrated into the book, turned into an absolute little sweetheart.
Now, even in his dreams at night, Ye Tian could no longer tell which version was the original Ye Tian and which was himself.
Those shared past experiences were etched into his memory. Every person he had met—whenever he thought of them—gave him the strange feeling of meeting an old acquaintance again.
Knock knock knock…
Knock knock!
The knocking interrupted Ye Tian’s thoughts. Yuan Heipang, wearing an apron, wiped his hands as he jogged out and called, “Who is it?”
“It’s me!”
The voice sounded familiar. Yuan Heipang glanced at Ye Tian and froze for a moment. Seeing no reaction from him, he went ahead and opened the door.
Outside, the north wind howled. Snow on the ground swirled like willow catkins in the gale.
Shi Xuan’s hair was blown across his face. Narrowing his eyes, he raised a hand to brush it aside and looked at Ye Tian with a flattering smile. “Ye Tian, I’ve come to talk business with you.”
Ye Tian paused, looking at Shi Xuan calmly, saying nothing for a long while.
“I… you… didn’t you want the grain shop?” Shi Xuan grew anxious and stepped forward to enter, but Ye Tian raised an eyebrow.
“There’s nothing to talk about!”
