Ye Tian gave a mischievous grin and turned to look at Sun Wuji.
Sitting by the fire, Sun Wuji rolled his eyes so hard they almost flipped over—at this hour, in such cold weather and complete darkness, where was he supposed to go steal a chicken?
Seeing the smug look on Ye Tian’s face, Sun Wuji got annoyed and was just about to speak.
But Ye Tian frowned slightly, clutching his chest with one hand as if in discomfort, and said, “It seems your master isn’t very willing?”
“No, no!”
Ye Shuangxue hurriedly said, patting Ye Tian’s chest with her small hand. Then she turned to Sun Wuji, her little face drooping as she asked, “Right, Master?”
“I…”
Sun Wuji pointed at Ye Tian, stomping his foot in anger, too furious to even speak. Glowering at Ye Tian, he snapped, “Just you wait!”
“I’ll go catch you a chicken!”
“Then many thanks, senior.”
Completely shameless, Ye Tian winked and grinned at him.
Fuming, Sun Wuji lifted the door curtain and stormed out.
Inside, the house was neat and spacious. Over the past few days, Ye Tian had spent money to have it renovated. The interior now felt much larger, the walls freshly plastered—bright and clean. No more drafts leaked in, and the temperature inside had risen significantly.
The three children were still young, so their small beds were lined up against the wall. Ye Tian’s bed was placed on the outer side. In the center of the room was a fire pit, built with bricks to enclose the firewood—clean and orderly, while also reducing the risk of fire.
On the other half of the room were three small desks. Ye Tian had drawn the designs himself and asked a carpenter to make them specifically for the children to study and write.
The whole family lived together in one room—it was warmer that way.
As soon as Sun Wuji left, Ye Yunting glanced at Ye Tian, rolled up his sleeves, and began preparing dinner.
“Dad!”
“Dad, brother, sister—I’m back!”
Xiao Jiang’s voice came from outside. Ye Tian’s face lit up as he straightened up on the bed, his eyes fixed on the door curtain.
Ye Yunting immediately dropped the spatula in his hand and rushed to the door.
Ye Shuangxue excitedly ran toward the entrance.
The curtain was lifted.
Wearing a fluffy fur hat, Xiao Jiang entered with an excited expression. As the thick curtain fell behind him, it shut out the howling northern wind.
His gaze swept across their new home, then quickly locked onto Ye Tian. With his short little legs, he ran straight over and threw himself onto Ye Tian, speaking in a muffled voice, “Dad, are you feeling better?”
Seeing his youngest son’s small head, with bits of snow still clinging to his hat, Ye Tian gently brushed it off and said, “Do you really think such a minor injury could trouble your father?”
“I’m completely fine.”
Xiao Jiang nodded, his big eyes misty. He knew Ye Tian was just trying to keep him from worrying.
“Xiao Jiang, will Divine Doctor Qiu take you away?” Ye Yunting asked, voicing his greatest concern.
Ye Shuangxue also frowned slightly and nodded in agreement.
Xiao Jiang sat up straight. Seeing his brother, sister, and father all looking at him with concern, his heart trembled. A warm feeling surged through his body, flowing through his veins to every limb.
He nodded. “I’m not leaving.”
“Master said I’m still too young. Medicine King Valley is too lonely, and I still need to study—and I need my family. He said that traveling and practicing medicine depends on one’s heart. As long as I want to heal and help others, it doesn’t matter where I am.”
“Waaah… that’s wonderful!”
Ye Shuangxue’s lips trembled—she didn’t know whether she was laughing or crying—as she rushed forward to hug Xiao Jiang.
Ye Yunting also nodded happily. Sitting on the bed, Ye Tian looked at the three children—none of them missing—and felt a deep sense of relief.
Xiao Jiang had only agreed to follow Qiu Feibai to study medicine in order to save him. At just five years old, if he had really been taken away, there was no telling if they would ever meet again in this lifetime.
Most importantly, the child was still too young—Ye Tian simply couldn’t bear to let him go.
“When we have the chance, we must repay Divine Doctor Qiu,” Ye Tian said gratefully.
The three children nodded repeatedly. The joy of being reunited as a family—nothing could compare to this moment.
“Oh right, where is Divine Physician Qiu? If he doesn’t have a place to stay, why not come live with us from now on?” Ye Tian suddenly thought of Qiu Feibai and turned to Xiao Jiang.
The house had just been renovated—clean and spacious. Qiu Feibai wasn’t someone who cared about luxury, and with Xiao Jiang there, he’d probably be willing to move in.
Xiao Jiang frowned. “Master went to the Jiang family.”
Ye Tian was taken aback.
Xiao Jiang continued, “I heard Senior Sister Jiang was frightened. Master was worried, so after sending me back, he went over there.”
Alright then.
Ye Tian sighed inwardly. Jiang Yunxi had been raised by Qiu Feibai himself—they were as close as father and daughter. Unless absolutely necessary, Qiu Feibai would never sever that bond. If he didn’t care about Jiang Yunxi, in his previous life he wouldn’t have gone against the pressure to oppose her relationship with Shen Jie—only to be killed by Shen Jie in the end.
If he wanted to stay alive, he really had to stay far away from that wretched couple.
Ye Tian frowned in thought. The three children exchanged glances, then each went about their own tasks.
…
Night fell over Mingfeng Village, the north wind howling.
In the distance, the hungry cries of wild beasts echoed faintly. The moon hung high in a sparse sky, its light reflecting off the snow, casting a dim, bluish glow.
“Crunch! Crunch!”
Sun Wuji trudged through the snow, one step deep, one step shallow, each step making a crisp sound. He wore straw sandals and thin clothing, yet seemed completely unaffected by the cold. Around him, it was as if an invisible barrier repelled the drifting snowflakes, keeping them from landing on him.
“Damn that Ye Tian—eating chicken in the middle of the night. Where the hell am I supposed to find chicken for you?” Sun Wuji grumbled, full of resentment.
If it weren’t for his disciple, he’d have already given Ye Tian a good beating.
The surroundings were silent when suddenly, a faint sound reached his ears. Sun Wuji’s ears twitched, and in a flash, he slipped into the shadows.
A few breaths later—
A woman in a cloak stood beneath a tree, her expression wary as she scanned the surroundings.
Seeing no one nearby, she raised her hand and let out a soft whistle.
Sun Wuji watched her curiously, but before he could make sense of it, another figure emerged from the darkness.
“Did you find any clues?”
The cloaked woman spoke. The other replied, “The jade pendant belongs to the Shen family. Ye Tian pawned it at the jewelry shop. He’s not a descendant of the Shen family—just a useless wastrel who eats, drinks, and plays around. The pendant has nothing to do with him.”
Ye Tian?
The moment Sun Wuji heard Ye Tian’s name, his interest was piqued. What trouble had that brat gotten himself into now?
“Our mission this time is to investigate the jade pendant. The more people who know about it, the more dangerous it becomes,” the cloaked woman said.
The other woman nodded immediately. “Then what about Ye Tian?”
“Kill him.”
Her voice was cold and ruthless, devoid of any emotion.
Squatting under the tree, Sun Wuji shook his head. If Ye Tian died, his long-term meal ticket would be gone. Besides, his little disciple would definitely be heartbroken. And if the disciple found out he had stood by and done nothing, their master-disciple bond would probably come to an end.
What a headache.
After a moment’s thought, Sun Wuji stepped out from the shadows, grinning foolishly at the two women beneath the tree.
“Do you have any chickens?”
“Where can I find chickens?”
“I need to steal one. You must have some on you, right?”
“Who’s there?!”
The two women in black were startled, their faces paling as they swiftly drew their weapons, staring at Sun Wuji with vigilance.
The newcomer was a mad-looking old man. The cloaked woman frowned as she sized him up, one hand already gripping the sword at her waist, ready to strike him down at any moment.
